Simone .... you might enjoy this book. In my opinion, it was FANTASTIC!

The Dinner by Herman Koch

message 2: by Anita (new) - added it

Anita Actually, I didn't like "Defending Jacob" at all, but thought "The Dinner" was amazing. While there was similarity in the themes, the authors treated it so differently. I would never recommend Jacob, but always recommend the Dinner, but not to all because it was so dark. And, I do know people who loved Jacob and were uncomfortable with Dinner.

Vikki I liked both books....

Simone I don't usually like comparing books, but the seems were similar... and yes, in my opinion The Dinner leave Defending Jacob in the dust! :)

Caroline Bock Shameless promotion but since I did read Defending Jacob --

We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver (this is not the shameless part - but much more intense than Defending Jacob...also a move with Tilda Swinton)

BEFORE MY EYES - new young adult novel about teens, gun violence and mental illness -

Before My Eyes

I really liked "Defending Jacob" a lot - how are these two books similar? Just wondering...

Caroline Bock Since you asked, I liked Defending Jacob too -- it was a good read -- until the end. I felt it turned into an overly simplistic courtroom drama-- debating the "murder gene." That said, I enjoyed it, read it with my book club. But why should you consider my new young adult novel-- BEFORE MY EYES -- it's an intense, up close, story of three teens at the very end of hot LONG ISLAND summer. It's told in three first person points of view: Barkley (who you soon realize is suffering paranoid schizophrenia); Max (son of a State Senator, wavering on prescription pill abuse), and Claire (taking care of her six year old sister). Over the last days of the summer, at the beach, the lives of the three collide -- a gun, mental illness, and a romance are all intertwined. I'm hoping you will consider reading BEFORE MY EYES.
