This looks really brilliant, but it's book 7 in a series. Should I read the first 6 before I read this one or will it stand alone?

Laurann Dohner's New Species is by far my all time favorite series...She has created such wonderful story lines and characters...you cannot wait to read about them....I just keep rereading this series as I breathlessly wait for new books. Getting Darkness and Smiley one right after the other was beyond AWESOME. Can hardly wait for more!!!

This is the first book I read in the series and I enjoyed it without reading the first 6 books. Although I still think it's better to read the first few books of the series to get a better picture of what happened before Tiger's book.

Snap.. i started with this one also ... but as soon as i finished it, i read the others, so i would start with book 1 and read them all in order.

I have all the books so far in this series and I think it would be best to read them in order. Sometime there are references to things that happened in previous books. Also, characters for other book frequently pop-up. It will still be a great read, but I think you'll have a better experience if you start from the beginning.

This is my favorite series ever!!!! you really need to start at the beginning to know how the got to where they are.

Love this series. Laurann Dohner rocks!!! The books are listed as stand alones , but you should read them from the beginning. Recurring characters appear in all books, so it's easier to follow.

Thanks all. I'm persuaded. Book 1 ....

If I were you I'd start the series from the beginning. You need to know who the New Species are and what they've been through to really understand their relationships with various humans, both good and bad. Plus each character is introduced in previous books, so we get to know them before they get their turn in the spotlight. Tiger in particular is a character we really get to know well in previous books, making his own book that much more fun. Also, there are several story arcs going on throughout the series, and if you started in the middle, you'd miss out on a lot of that.

Start from the beggining, you wont be dissapointed (Obsidian is the exeptional, I think)

I always try to read the books in order if it is a series only because I every series I have read the characters overlap and the stories of the previous characters helps you with the current one.

I loved each and every one of these SPECIES books. I wait with anticipation every time a new one is on the way.

I don't think you need to read all of the prior books, but would recommend the first book, as it provides the foundation for the series. My favorites are the first book, Tiger, and Valiant. Those 3 are my fall back books. Smiley is good too, but he's adorable. I hope she will come out with a book for Vengeance.
