Which LIST book did you just start?
Jessica wrote: "Judith wrote: "Jessica wrote: "I just started Regeneration by Pat Barker. It is one I just picked randomly from the list so don't have any expectations for it. Has anyone else read it? What did you..."The other books in the trilogy might be a tad below the level of Regeneration, but really, IMHO, they are also excellent.
I'm going to start an H. G. Wells double bill, first 'The Time Machine', then 'The Invisible Man'. My first experience with Wells.
Jessica wrote: "Judith wrote: "Jessica wrote: "I just started Regeneration by Pat Barker. It is one I just picked randomly from the list so don't have any expectations for it. Has anyone else read it? What did you..."As I remember, Sasoon is only minor or not at all in the other two books in the Regeneration Trilogy. The last one, "The Eye in the Door" is almost exclusively about the psychiatrist and the corporal who could not speak after being "shell shocked". My memory is a little foggy on one verses the others in the trilogy, but I believe the psychiatrist and one or two of his professional associates are the only characters who are in all three.
Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong!

I know, I know; but I'm finding it easy to pick up and put down without forgetting what is going on...I do get a few pages read every day to keep my head in it just enough I think. What a hoot!
I will be starting Moby-Dick or, The Whale very soon. I'm really not sure what to expect from this one.
Liz M wrote: "Beth wrote: "Just about to start A Good Fall"I've liked his work that I've read, but I don't think Ha Jin has any books on the 1001 lists."
OOPS! I had it on my to read pile, and had purged most of the non 1001 books from it, so I had just assumed....
Rachel (Sfogs) wrote: "I will be starting Moby-Dick or, The Whale very soon. The rest is really worth reading.

I did like the doctor so if he is in all I would be ok with that.

That is good it was one of few books in college I didn't finish because less then a week to read it was a tad overwhelming. It isn't an easy style so you have to devote yourself to focusing. Your response makes me want to pick it up again now that I do have more time.
Beth wrote: "But I did just start Pride and Prejudice as well, and that is definitely on the list!!!"That is one of my all time favourites!!
I love all of Jane Austen's books!!

Sounds good! I've just started it. lol I'll probably like the scientific parts, as I'm doing a biology degree at the moment! :D

I really enjoyed this book. It took me a while to navigate its dystopic world what with school and all, but it was a great read, and I think the ending is very fitting. That's all I will say on the matter :P Enjoy!

I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera, my second by Marquez (I read One Hundred Years of Solitude early this year). I'm really enjoying it so far! It's not quite as good as One Hundred Years of Solitude, so apparently I should have read this one first... anyway, I've definitely fallen hard for Marquez.
Bucket wrote: "I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera, my second by Marquez (I read One Hundred Years of Solitude early this year). I'm really enjoying it so far! It's not quite ..."I find his writting style a bit strange, though it's still a very good story.
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. I actually started it about 10 days ago and I'm just to the point where I have less than 1000 pages left. I think I'll have to check out the short 1001 books thread after this one.

Love in the Time of Cholera is, so far, not magical.

I finished this recently and did the same thing you are doing as in reading a little at a time. It certainly is funny and I want to read it again because I read it on my Kindle and missed a lot of the context (missing pages, squiggles etc).
Am only about 40 pages into A Town Like Alice but am pleasantly surprised to find it a very good read so far.
Shay wrote: "A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. I actually started it about 10 days ago and I'm just to the point where I have less than 1000 pages left. I think I'll have to check out the short 1001 books thread after this one."One of my all-time favorite books! Very long, but sooo worth it!
Just started Dr Faustus by Mann, I've read a few of his before and enjoyed them.Rachel
The chapters on biology and whale hunting were fascinating, and with a biology degree you'll either be shouting "what?" in disbelief or laughing. Just amazed me what science really believed about whales.
Bucket wrote: "I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera, my second by Marquez (I read One Hundred Years of Solitude early this year). I'm really enjoying it so far! Mikela wrote: "Am only about 40 pages into A Town Like Alice but am pleasantly surprised to find it a very good read so far."I'm getting very near the end of A Town Like Alice and have loved every minute of it. I think the main character is one of the most admirable people in literature. Enjoy!
Bucket wrote: "Rachel (Sfogs) wrote: "Bucket wrote: "I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera, my second by Marquez (I read One Hundred Years of Solitude early this year). I'm real..."Definitely try reading Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo. I think it's on the list too, along with The Burning Plain: and other Stories, which I haven't read yet.
And I guess you would also enjoy the short stories by Jorge Luis Borges.
Thanks for the tips Masanobu!Jessica - I'm 200 pages in now, so I can more officially say that Love in the Time of Cholera is wonderful, but nowhere near as good as One Hundred Years of Solitude. The story is somewhat more typical, the scene-setting isn't as visual, and the themes are less provocative. The characterization is just as good, however. :)
130 pages into White Teeth and am finding it just not to live up to the promise I had for it. Well, I'll continue to slog through it.
I am just starting into The Blind Assassin by Atwood. I have heard & read many good reviews on it, so I am eager to get into it :) Have to get back to the library Monday morning & return the 2 I finished, renew this one, & target the next ones on my personal "short list" of ones I'm going to tackle this 2 weeks, LOL
I've started A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway. I've been knitting like crazy and it's only about 8 hours long so I should be through shortly.

The 'fish' part has given me giggles already! :)
This past week I've started Frankenstein and The Green Hat. I suspect I'll make more progress on The Green Hat, but I may not yet be far enough into Frankenstein to say so.
Jennifer W wrote: "This past week I've started Frankenstein and The Green Hat. No bolts sticking out the sides-of-heads etc.
Goodbye to Berlin. I'm excited about reading this, as Cabaret, one of my favourite films, is based on it.
Cindy wrote: "I'm starting The Count of Monte Cristo. Another hefty list book for 2011. :)"It may be hefty but totally engaging. I finished it off in about a week. Not at all a tough read. chapters are short enough to be bedtime reads or at the gym. Enjoy!
Cindy wrote: "I'm starting The Count of Monte Cristo. Another hefty list book for 2011. :)"AMAZING read! Such a page-turner!!
P.S. I had quite the lit crush on Edmond Dantès!
I'm just about to polish off The Woodlanders, but I've also started The Drowned World.Charity, don't get us started on literary crushes! (Becky Sharp, Emma Woodhouse, Milady........)

Starting Brideshead revisited. I have read other Waugh work and enjoyed it so I think this will be the same for me.
Jessica wrote: "Starting Brideshead revisited. I have read other Waugh work and enjoyed it so I think this will be the same for me."This is the only Waugh I've read - it was fabulous!

I would highly recommend him I read his men at arms trilogy and was hooked and several of his books are on the list as well.

This book can be time consuming and a very slow read I would recommend this book when you are able to focus on it by itself.
