I just started Anna Karenina. I'm loving it so far. I've had this book since I was a teenager, but have never gotten past the third chapter. Now I'm in and can't put it down.

I just went to the library this morning and checked out both Umberto Eco list books: The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum. I keep thinking that I have read The Name of the Rose before, so I am going to investigate...

After that, I could read the agricultural and political parts in calm.
I just started The House of the Seven Gables. Quite interesting so far. Starts off with an unscrupulous man who has another man executed to grab his land, & a curse by the dying man. That's a pretty good hook! LOL.
Amanda wrote: "Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. So basically porn."I have that one on my state library search. I'm hoping SOME library in the state of Florida has it, LOL

That is AWESOME that you came home with a haul like that! I have several big secondhand book stores around here. Found quite a few list books in them too :) I'm trying not to spend my husband's hard earned paycheck on books though, so I live at the library, LOL
Bea wrote: "Just started I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Had been putting it off because I was afraid it would be upsetting. So far I'm really enjoying it though."I read it last month, & really enjoyed it too. She writes so naturally :)
Beth wrote: "Just started 1984. Liking it a lot so far."Glad to hear it, that one's on my dresser to read next!
Started Enduring Love by Ian McEwan last night, and the plot had me so engrossed I knocked over the first half last night and at lunch today. Looking forward to how the relationships continue to develop, by like most McEwan books the protagonist is not a likeable character.
Lisa wrote: "Rachel (Sfogs) wrote: "I've just started Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. And went to a big 'bookarama' second-hard book sale, and came home with 25..."Lol~!! It was a fundraiser for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, which meant I just HAD to go...
Well that was my excuse anyway! :D
Amanda wrote: "I've started Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Hardy. So far...I want to punch PRETTY MUCH everyone in the book. Wait, no, her little brother is cool. But everyone else, yes. Punchkick."There is always a book with at least one character, that you just want to knock sense into!
Deanne wrote: "Started The Adventurous Simplicissimus, getting the hang of the style of writing and the language."Deanne, what's your grand total these days? You're getting nail-bitingly close, I just know it!
I just started Cause for Alarm by Eric Ambler. It's a spy thriller set in pre-WWII Fascist Italy. I'm listening to the audiobook narrated by David Thorpe. I'm a couple of hours in and loving it. Just the thing if you are looking for an entertaining and atmospheric read, on the lightish side. I picked up the book on Audible as part of its 3 mystery or thriller books for 2 credits sale that is going on until October 25.
Just started The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
And the library called! Fanny Hill is IN!!! Woo Hoo, going to pick that one up TODAY :)

WOW~!! Good on you!!
Which are the longest five list books you have read so far? I'd like to find out and hopefully read them sooner.
Just started Middlemarch. Haven't read Eliot, but have seen people raving about her books here, so decided to take the 912 page plunge...Also busy constructing my reading list for next year for the Around the World in 2012 group, making as many as possible 1001 books part of my "itinerary" as possible. There are a ton of countries represented, so I think I should be able to have an almost exclusively 1001 list. If you want to check out my list: http://tinyurl.com/beth52in2012

Good luck! Thats quite a list!
I ended up getting a bit overwhelmed with all of the books I checked out all at once, so I had to go back & revise my strategy some. Most of the books that I had in my currently reading list, if I hadn't actually opened it yet got moved to my to read list & went back to the library. I got Fanny Hill, & started it last night. I'm 75 pages in, & it's definitely erotica, LOL. I re-checked out Of Love & Shadows, which I was 207 pages into when my renewal period ran out, & finished it last night. I ended up having to return The House of the Seven Gables too, about halfway in, along with A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The other one I was a hundred or so pages into, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, wasn't in, so I checked out The Blind Assassin instead.New strategy: When I'm done with Fanny Hill(should be a fast, fun read), & The Blind Assassin, these 3 books will go back, & I'll check Dirk Gently back out, along with Portrait & 7 Gables, finish those 3 up, then make a list of the 1001 Books that I currently have on the to read list, & pick up 3 at a time.
This way it will keep me from getting overwhelmed. I also started one on my personal shelf, The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test. It starts off with a pretty fun hook, a journalist getting an interview with the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest while he was in jail for drug charges, LOL.
RachelThe 5 longest books
Clarissa by Richardson
A Suitable Boy by Seth
War and Peace by Tolstoy

Thanks! I've read Lord of the Rings, which I was worried about when I started it. Though because it was so long when I finished it, I really missed reading it!

These are the longest single-volume books that you read, unlike Dance to the Music of Time which you read as 12 books?
Hi! I've been a member since 2009 but haven't posted much as my son was born on late in the same year...I've been busy but lurking around reading everyone's posts! I'm trying to meet my personal reading goal and thought posting more myself may help...Currently reading...On Beauty by Zadie Smith (audio book actually) and The Red Queen by Margaret Drabble.
Of late I've been tackeling the list from newest (using original list)...
I just started Regeneration by Pat Barker. It is one I just picked randomly from the list so don't have any expectations for it. Has anyone else read it? What did you think?
Jessica wrote: "I just started Regeneration by Pat Barker. It is one I just picked randomly from the list so don't have any expectations for it. Has anyone else read it? What did you think?"It's fantastic.

Thank you as I try to make it through this list sometimes I have to get a book that I never heard of.

"Just finished it about a week ago. Really enjoyed it, if you can say that about such a dark book.
Beth wrote: "Just about to start A Good Fall"I've liked his work that I've read, but I don't think Ha Jin has any books on the 1001 lists.
Liz MA Dance to the Music must be about 3000 pages, but I read it as 12 separate books so it didn't seem so big.
Voss is getting interesting, and I've finally got hold of The Last Temptation by Kazantzakis, inter-library loan.
Jessica wrote: "I just started Regeneration by Pat Barker. It is one I just picked randomly from the list so don't have any expectations for it. Has anyone else read it? What did you think?"I liked it very much and went on to read the other two in the trilogy, which were not quite as good (in my opinion). There is a great movie version of it by a different name...can't think of it right now; but if you are interested, I'll look it up for you.
"Tristram Shandy" by Lawrence SterneThis is pretty long and I don't have that much time for reading for a while....
My second interlibrary loan, The Black Dahlia just came in late yesterday. it was a little off putting right at first, but now that I'm into the budding friendship between Blanchard & Beichardt, it's getting interesting.
Reading The last temptation by Kazantzakis at the moment, was expecting blasphemy but at present can't see what the fuss was about, but I'm not religious.
