I actually picked this book up today because as an alternate because the library didn't have several of the others I wanted. I'm stoked to find out that you all think it's such a great story :)

I won't tell you what page that scene falls on but I won't have to, the initial set up with the ethereally beautiful sister Rosa the Beautiful with her alabaster skin & mist green hair is already enough to catch your attention from the first page!

Ellen, actually it's not RIGHT at the start, you have to meet the rest of the family first, including Rosa the Beautiful, green haired, dreamy eyed, & perfect :) But if a green haired daughter of an aristocratic family & a younger child that sees things that her family cannot see, has telekinetic powers, & reads auras isn't enough to catch you, the scene in the church will. It's a captivating story.

Yes, I expected that the scene wouldn't take place right away, but rather would be placed a bit further along in the book but still toward the beginning. It just sounds like a really great read, and I think I'll look for it at the library next time I'm there. Thanks!

That's really cool. Things like that happen a lot i find. I'll see a book and then forget about it and then eventually it will turn up somewhere else. Like the book is following me or something. I really loved that book though, simply amazing.

I just finished it a few minutes ago. Spoiler alert, towards the back of the book it slows down a bit with all of the political coup/military takeover stuff, but still good...

Having nevre read anything of his, I appreciate the heads up. Guess that's why it's on the Banned book list, LOL. Actually, I'm going to go pull Breakfast At Tiffany's out of the book now, thin book, should be able to knock that one out quick, then I'm probably going to just close my eyes & grab one :)

Yeah i agree, Lord of the rings is an amazing book. You can see how The hunger games and Gone (by Micheal Grant) have been influenced by it.

I'm struggling with LOTR right now. (Hate the hobbits singing. Hate everyone singing.) I've never been able to finish this and loathed it so much I've never seen the movies. Do they sing in the movies, too? I can usually force myself to finish a book by reading 30-40 pages a day, no matter how much I dislike it. I cannot do it with this book- I can't make it 30 pages most days. Maybe if they would stop singing.

message 4497: by Tara (new)

Tara A (quartinsession) | 59 comments Shay, that made me laugh! I'm reading LOTR as well right now - I'd read FOTR before the movies came out, but then didn't continue with the other two, but have started again at the beginning. I am fairly neutral on it thus far. ;)

I've also got Pride and Prejudice, The World According to Garp and The Idiot on the go so I can pick something up depending on my mood and medium (one is on my Kindle, one just on the iPhone and one hard copy). I should probably get focused though. :P

I just finished Garp today. If you had asked me 20 years ago, I would have said it was my favorite Irving book. I think today I'd say that Prayer for Owen Meaney is my favorite Irving book. I enjoyed P & P. I still have 3 Austen books to go. I read the Idiot earlier this year- liked the first 2/3 and thought the rest dragged until the end. I can't decide which list book to start next. I tried Virgin Suicides. Read a page or two, remember that I loathed it and put it aside for later.

Is this a list book? It looks interesting, but I can't find it on any of my versions of the 1001 books lists.
