message 401: by Linda (new)

Linda Recently started One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I realized I don't read enough 20th century works, so I need to get up with the times I guess!

message 402: by Linda (new)

Linda I hope you enjoy Pilgrim's Progress; it's one of my favorites. It helps if you know the Bible. Does your edition include footnotes with scripture references because so many of his allusions, characters and statements are directly from the Bible. It has been said that if Bunyan were pricked, he would have bled scripture.

message 403: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments I started Ethan Frome yesterday. I am not too far into it, so have no judgement yet. This is my first sojourn into Wharton. I hope I like her considering I have several of her books unread on my bookshelf.

message 404: by Denise (new)

Denise | 231 comments I listened to Ethan Frome on a roadtrip once. I remember liking it. That's my only Wharton experience. I think there' a discussion going on about her on the "just finished" thread.

message 405: by Macy (new)

Macy | 17 comments I just started The Secret History. So far I'm not thrilled, but I've heard good things about it, so I'm doing my best.

message 406: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Just started Of Mice & Men by Steinbeck. Loving it. I'll probably finish it today, as it is a short read.

Macy, I really enjoyed The Secret History, but I can see that it isn't a book that everyone can fall in love with...it definitely has its quirks (to put it mildly). I look forward to your thoughts upon completion.

message 407: by Karen (new)

Karen | 63 comments I've just started "The Accidental" by Ali Smith. So far it seems ok, but I can't see what would have caused it to be added to this list. Time will tell!

message 408: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I think I'll be picking up Choke by Chuck Palahniuk next. I'm disappointed that I missed out on the group read since I was in the process of moving, but I'll still post my thoughts on the discussion thread when I've finished.

message 409: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessbowen) I'm just starting The Virgin Suicides. I LOVED Middlesex by him, so I'm hoping this will be as good!

message 410: by Dana (new)

Dana (dgreading) About to finish Cannery Row. Fantastic so far, I find it catching my breath. White Teeth is next.

message 411: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments Dana, I had the same reaction to Cannery Row. It was brilliant. I found myself surprised by just how funny different parts of it were. Steinbeck always seemed especially bleak to me and I loved finding that he had a great sense of humor too.

message 412: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle Ok, I am waaayyyy behind but I am reading Glamorama right now, which I am kind of enjoying. I love the list because I normally never would look at some of these books and now a whole new world has opened up!!

message 413: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments The unconsoled by Ishiguro, I'm over half way there. It's a very frustrating read in many ways, but I'm determined to finish it in the hope it makes sense.

message 414: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 87 comments Rachelle I just hit 200 pages on Glamourama so I'm with you. I enjoy reading it but oh my goodness Victor is driving me insane. I picked it up as part of the club (I never would've read it on my own). That's what I enjoy about this group.

message 415: by Anna (new)

Anna | 4 comments One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. And I am FLYING through it. It's amazingly written.

message 416: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments I started Henry James' The Turn of the Screw last night. So far I'm really enjoying James' writing style. It almost begs to be read aloud.

message 417: by Christine (new)

Christine (hatorisblindeye) | 5 comments I just started The Time Traveler's Wife yesterday. I can't say I'm enthralled yet, but I'll definitely give it a chance because I like the writing style.

message 418: by Dana (new)

Dana (dgreading) I just started White Teeth by Zadie Smith. I have high hopes.

Middlesex was not as good as the Virgin Suicides for me, but I have had many a discussion/argument on the topic, so let me know what you all think.

message 419: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 87 comments Chris I just finished the Time Traveler's Wife recently. I liked the book a lot but it took me several pages to really get into it. The timeline is what threw me off and finally about halfway through the book I had a better grasp of the timeline aspect. It's a good book, don't give up on it yet.

message 420: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (inverness) | 21 comments I wasn't crazy about Middlesex. There were sections that were quite fascinating, such as the African-American Muslim subculture in Detroit.

I loved the Virgin Suicides as well. I loved the mood of the book.

message 421: by Judith (last edited Aug 07, 2008 07:39AM) (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments After reading recent comments, I may be sorry; but I'm starting "The Alchemist" today! I got it out of curiosity and also for a reading challenge I'm involved in...

message 422: by Katie ATX (new)

Katie ATX (katieatx) | 74 comments I just started the Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham. Last night I finished The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood....it was one of her books that didn't make the list and now I know why! It was a pointless book.

message 423: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle I like the book too, but I feel like I am going in circles with some of the "talking" Victor does. I enjoy, though, the time frame refrences. I read something and go, "Oh, I forgot about that song, or I forgot they dated." That is the fun part for me.

message 424: by Kris (new)

Kris Zelunka | 7 comments Dana,

I agree - I preferred The Virgin Suicides to Middlesex. Not that I didn't enjoy Middlesex, I thought it was well written and interesting, but it wasn't as gripping as The Virgin Suicides.

message 425: by [deleted user] (new)

Started book of lost things. So far really good

message 426: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) | 25 comments
I just started Jane Eyre.
Can't believe i've never read this one. I love it so far.

Dana-
How are you liking White Teeth? I was really engrossed for the first hundred pages or so, then i started to get bored...

message 427: by Beth (new)

Beth I just got The Tale of Genji and I am so excited. I've been wanting to read it for a long time. I just hope I don't get confused like a lot of people seem to get...

message 428: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments I am starting Native Son by Richard Wright...I think it might be a re-read. I can't remember if I have read it before or not.

message 429: by Judith (last edited Aug 11, 2008 07:35AM) (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Abandoned "The Alchemist" for "All Quiet On The Western Front". Chilling images so far!

message 430: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Just started Nostromo by Conrad, I now know why the smaller ship in Aliens is called the Sulaco.

message 431: by Kara (new)

Kara Just started One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

Also started Anna Karenina.

I have read both these books before, but have absolutely no recollection of them!

message 432: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm taking a little break from the list and reading John Connolly's The Book of Lost Things. so far a great read!

message 433: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Emilee, I just finished The Book of Lost Things and I was pleasantly surprised. Very good read.

I'm back to the list now. Just about to start Cocaine Nights. We'll see how it goes.

message 434: by [deleted user] (new)

choke

message 435: by Jen (new)

Jen I'm listening to Corelli's Mandolin. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

message 436: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Tia, is that the book that the movie Blade Runner is based on??

message 437: by [deleted user] (new)

Just started The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. This is my first time reading Morrison, though I saw the film adaptation of Beloved. She seems to have a thing for pregnancies out of incest. I'm not sure how much I'm going to like her.

message 438: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 87 comments Starting the Kite Runner.

message 439: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Charity
Yes Bladerunner was based on do androids dream of electric sheep.
Just started the romance of the three kingdoms, trying to keep track of the large cast of characters. Have to flick back occasionally to remember when they came in.

message 440: by April (new)

April Amy, Song of Solomon is the best Toni Morrison work in the world (IMO :)

message 441: by Denise (new)

Denise | 231 comments It's been a long time since I've read Toni Morrison, but I always really liked her work. The hotel I'm staying at has a copy of "Love" by her downstairs. Maybe I'll have time to read it before I leave. I've never heard of it. Has anyone read it?

Other than that, the next book I hope to start is Wind-up Bird Chronicle for a book club .

message 442: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 72 comments Amy, Toni Morrison is not exactly a barrel of laughs. I have to be in the right mood to read her stuff. Most of the time, I would rather not read something that leaves me feeling that depressed.

message 443: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (klonk) Enduring Love by Ian McEwan.

message 444: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (courtneyclift) Denise, I had trouble with Morrison's LOVE (and I'm a huge fan). It's like Jazz music I think, you either get it or you don't.

Peace!

message 445: by April (new)

April I've read "Love" and it is very good. Not as dark as her other works.

message 446: by Denise (new)

Denise | 231 comments That's it. I'm going down to the lobby and grabbing "Love." (completely unintended inuendo)
We're off work tomorrow due to potential hurricane and I may need something to do.

message 447: by Karen (new)

Karen | 63 comments I've just begun "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" by Mohsin Hamid. So far, so good!

message 448: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 30 comments Wind-Up Bird is great. I really, really enjoyed it.

message 449: by [deleted user] (new)

The Bell Jar, so far really good.

message 450: by Vicky (new)

Vicky | 43 comments Denise,
I listened to "Love" on audio-tape, and I really enjoyed it. I love Toni Morrison, and this was another winner!
