Deanne | 681 comments Started At Lady Molly's the fourth book in Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time. Powell manages to keep the quality of the writing up. Becoming very fond of Jenkins.

I counted the 28 books I'd read before starting the list.

You had only read 28, and now you are nearly done? That makes it even more impressive!

message 4204: by Amira (new)

Amira (liightningbolt) | 11 comments I have started Life of Pi. I've been putting it off for 3 years and I fear expectations may have been risen subconsciously. We shall see!

Robin Reese (reesereads) | 119 comments I need to put down "The Blind Assassin" because I'm not getting invested or interested and I'm going to pick up "Kieron Smith, Boy".

This is your whole group of partners!

Bea | 110 comments I just started listening to The Corrections read by George Guidall. I'm enjoying it so far. I'm not finding the characters as abhorrent as some of the reviewers here on Goodreads. In fact, I quite sympathize with the father. I'm probably less than a quarter of the way in, though.

message 4208: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (mmorrell) | 25 comments I just started Kafka On the Shore.

message 4209: by [deleted user] (new)

Just started Ivanhoe. I am already completely confused but I was really tired when I started. Maybe I will pick it up again when I have more energy...

message 4210: by Robin (new)

Robin Reese (reesereads) | 119 comments Okay, I'm having problems finding my next book after a really great run. I just began "Kieron Smith, Boy" and am now retiring it Fter 50 pages. I wasn't interested in the irksome voice of the protagonist. So that's 2 for 2 since "The Blind Assassin" didn't work all that well. Now, do I start something new or go back to "Blind Assassin"? I have a whole bunch of books at home so I'm sure I'll find something worth my while.

I'm currently listening to an audio version of The Blind Assassin. It took me a while to really get into it, but I'm invested in the characters stories now. I want to find out how it all fits together and turns out. So there may be hope that you may get into it more as you go along. How far have you gotten?

message 4215: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Just about to start The Catcher in the Rye .

About 70 pages but I have a bad relationship with Atwood. I haven't enjoyed anything of hers beyond "Cat's Eye" and her book of shorts.

message 4217: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I started "The Time Machine" by Wells yesterday.

This is my first time to read it, and so far (Chapter 1) I love it.

I just finished Oryx and Crake, which makes me feel a tiny bit better about the fact that she has 6 books on the list. That isn't one of them though, unfortunately!

message 4220: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Maggie wrote: "I just started Kafka On the Shore."

I absolutely adore this book. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is one of my favorite books.

message 4221: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 251 comments I started Watchmen last night. I probably won't get through it too fast, though, because I'm trying to finish up a couple non-list books in the next week or so.

message 4222: by Genia (new)

I much preferred her witch series to the vampire books but both are very sensual.

message 4224: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Started Castle Richmond by Trollope, slow going but mainly because Trollope spends the first 60 pages introducing the surroundings and the main characters.

message 4226: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Multiple listings?

message 4227: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Palombi (jenniferpalombi) I just began The Children's Book by A. J. Byatt. 702 pages... should keep me reading for a bit!

message 4228: by Robin (new)

Robin Reese (reesereads) | 119 comments Denae wrote: "Multiple listings?"

Multiple books from a single author; i vote for more variety.

message 4229: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Ah. Yeah, I have no idea how the list was decided, although I think some of hers have moved on and off.

message 4230: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mmbirch3) | 38 comments The list comes from a book published every two years. I think the content is decided on by various English professors, authors, etc. Unfortunately we have no control over what they put on it.

message 4231: by Sofie (new)

Sofie | 8 comments I just started L'Immoraliste by André Gide. I didn't even know it was on the list when I first started it. I'll have to read it for school in the fall, so I figured I'd read it in French now when I have lots of time, and read a translation when it's assigned.
When reading the preface I wasn't sure I'd be able to handle it, but the story is much easier to read.

message 4232: by El (new)

El Just about to start The Death of Ivan Ilych. I'm reading it in Great Short Works of Leo Tolstoy which also includes The Kreutzer Sonata. Two 1001 Books with one stone.

message 4233: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) | 195 comments One big Russian stone, El!

I'm starting Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind.

message 4234: by El (new)

El One big Russian stone with a big Russian beard! :)

I haven't read Perfume yet - saw the movie and think I may be one of the few people who didn't hate it. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the book.

message 4235: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) | 195 comments That's a very hairy stone! So far, Perfume is a very smelly book. ;) I never saw the movie.

message 4236: by Linda (new)

Linda Reading The Plague by Camus. Tip: If you are grossed out/hate rats, you might want to skip this one!

message 4237: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) El, I loved the movie. But I haven't read the book. I have a soft spot for Tom Tykwer movies, though.

Ah, that makes it more difficult. I have only read The Handmaid's Tale before this one, which I loved. This one feels like a completely different author!

message 4239: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments Started reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote while on the train this morning. It's one of the books that you know you should have read ages ago (much like Catcher in the Rye and One Flew over the Cuckoos nest)

message 4240: by Yrinsyde (new)

Read perfume in 2004, as it was on the BBC top 100, I voted for the book which came first. Loved perfume and in particular the emphasis on the sense of smell, and I lent my copy to about 6 people.
Started book 6 Of A Dance to the Music of Time: The Kindly Ones, number 7 and 8 are on the bookshelf.

message 4246: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments Just started Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende, & al already on page 229 :) it's a really great read, & I am definitely going to be looking forward to reading more of her books.

On the OTHER hand, I'm really having a rough time hacking through The Name of the Rose. The story itself is good, but I keep getting bogged down in the details!

I read Daughter of Fortune many years ago and loved it. To me it is unlike others of hers I have read since.

I did not care for The Name of the Rose and finally abandoned it after a couple of hundred pages.
