Over half way through Gravity's rainbow, I'm enjoying it's bizarreness but not sure I love it.

I admire your lack of control. Yesterday I tried going through some older titles but I couldn't latch on to any. I'm lesser read in the post 1950s-present so I'm concentrating on them. I've spent $50 on books this week so I fear going broke this summer while I have all this time to read. I've got to learn how to use an ebook library.

That is cool!! There is also a website that has a free random number generator www.random.org that I've found works well. I haven't used it much; parts of it are also paid, so you have to look for the free parts, but it's great for those of us who don't have computer progammer boyfriends =}.

I did find it slow. I read it after the movie came out and saw the movie first, so I kept comparing the two in my mind. I'm always looking at how they changed the story to make it work (or destroy it) as a screenplay. Now THAT would make a great thread on some of these books :)

I've used random.org in the past, and like it, but I was looking for a list of 100, so I went to him :)

I'm not good at handing over control, so this was also an exercise in that. We'll see how it goes!

What do you do if a random number comes up and you just can't get into the book? Do you force yourself to read it or...?

I'm a little more than half way done and really enjoying it. Finding it a real page turner and hard to put down. Lee is a real mystery at this point, as are the other main characters, Kay and the narrator, Dwight. Hard to decide what motivates them and finding it impossible to guess how it will end. Bonus on that.

Yes, Melissa, that would be a good thread. I always try to both see any movie versions and read the book.

Just finished the book and loved it. Loved is probably the wrong word but this was one fantastic read.

Ivy, think you will love it. I've probably read the trilogy 4 times and will most likely read it again within the next few years. While the size is daunting it is so spell-binding that it seems to finish itself.

I'm almost finished with The Sea so I've started Professor Martens' Departure. I'm liking it so far, but I'm glad I read King, Kaiser, Tsar: Three Royal Cousins Who Led the World to War (not a list book) this past winter or I'd have no idea what was going on. Unless you're well versed in European history from the beginning of the 20th century, I'd suggest you pick up King, Kaiser, Tsar or a similar book first.

Gravity's Rainbow is on deck this month and it just might break me.

I caved in and bought a used copy of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. It came yesterday & I'm having so much fun with it. I'm so glad I got it. :D

Just do the 30 pages a day thing. You'll be done in less than a month. You can get through any book this way. It's how I got through In Search of Lost Time (Remembrance of Things Past): Proust 6-pack, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (all volumes), etc. Those took more than a month, of course. But, I did it using the 30 pages a day rule.

I really enjoyed everything I've read from Oscar and this is one of my favorites. It's too bad that there are no movies that really did the book justice (or did I miss one out there that portrays it well?).
