Brave New Worldby Aldous Huxley. I hope this is good. One of my co-workers did not enjoy it!

Denae wrote: "Jude the Obscure"I also started this book today. I've had it for so many years and for some reason had never opened it. It's my first Thomas Hardy, and I adore Victorian literature, so I'm excited. :)
Karina wrote: "Brave New Worldby Aldous Huxley. I hope this is good. One of my co-workers did not enjoy it!"Well, I loved it, and I hope you do too!
I just requested "What Maisie Knew" from the library, but I'm picking up "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day" tomorrow. I've only read 17 out of the 1001, so I have a long way to go.
Karina wrote: "Brave New Worldby Aldous Huxley. I hope this is good. One of my co-workers did not enjoy it!"I didn't either. Gave up on it not far into it. Boring! Most enjoy it though...
I've been reading Ellison's Invisible Man. Jury is out on this one, but I'm not quite halfway through yet so I'll try to withhold judgment.
Wise Children by Angela Carter - not that into it so far and also reading After the Quake by Haruki Murakami
Ellie wrote: "Is The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe a list book?
In that case, I just began The Mysteries of Udolpho."
And not done yet, will read it through April. Loving it.

Delta of Venus by Anais Nin...hmmm, it's not quite what I expected...which was, oh I don't know, perhaps a more explicit Virginia Woolf? (it's NOT!) Stories are very hit/miss so far--tally is 1/8. Did enjoy the preface very much.
I'm in the beginning chapters of Cancer Ward and am also rereading Everything That Rises Must Converge.
I started John Banville's "The Sea" yesterday after I finished a re-read of Flaubert's "Madame Bovary".
Amanda wrote: "The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I am too early in to really leave feedback."I was really doubtful about this when i first started reading it but after about 40 pages i was hooked and ended up loving it. A new take on the dystopian novel. V good!
Brent wrote: "I wrote the 2012 asteroid-impact novel Regolith, so I just started reading Carl Sagan's Contact again, after so many years. It's still good."Spam? Four posts in under ten minutes, each mentioning the book he wrote.
Liz M wrote: "Spam? Four posts in under ten minutes, each mentioning the book he wrote."Yeah, I blocked him from the group.
Judith, I wanted to read The Sea after it came up as a possible group read (but wasn't selected), but then I saw a lot of reviews saying the writing wasn't very good, so I've decided against it for the time being. Do let us know how it is!

The writing is quite good, but I have trouble tracking with the narrator's perceptions...Irish terms are a real problem, not being able to identify with much of what he feels is another. I'll keep you posted.

I've just moved The Elegance of the Hedgehog from my to-read pile to my reading-now table. I am somewhat dreading it; I've heard it was heavy-handed, pretentious, and overwrought.
Just started Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I hope it is better than Jane Eyre, which her sister wrote and I throughly disliked it.
Karina wrote: "Just started Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I hope it is better than Jane Eyre, which her sister wrote and I throughly disliked it."I think Wuthering Heights is better. It is still very dark, but I loved it and though Jane Eyre was just ok, lol
@ Cindy - I just started Les Miz as well. Only on page 100 and is slow going for me since I can really only read during lunch. Trying really hard to hang in there and don't want to be on it for months and months.@ Karina and Elisabeth - Really? Wuthering Heights is better? Granted, I have not read the book, seen the movie, but I really did like Jane Eyre.
Emily wrote: "@ Cindy - I just started Les Miz as well. Only on page 100 and is slow going for me since I can really only read during lunch. Trying really hard to hang in there and don't want to be on it for m..."Oooh, fantastic Emily! I've only done Book 1 of Fantine so far, but I'm loving the character development.
I'm doing it as a part of a group read in a different group - we have a 3-month schedule with weekly discussions. If you're interested, drop me a message, and I can share the details. :)
Cindy wrote: "Emily wrote: "@ Cindy - I just started Les Miz as well. Only on page 100 and is slow going for me since I can really only read during lunch. Trying really hard to hang in there and don't want to ..."I would love to know more. I'm worried, though. Like I said, I only really have time to read at lunch at work (if that) I work 2 jobs so reading time is minimal. That being said, I need to got off-line so that I can read some before bed! But, give me some more information, because it might be a little more incentive to keep plugging away!
It was. It's a nice adventure story, the ur-spy novel, in its own way. What I didn't know and only found out while reading this book is that there's a whole series of them, with the protagonist becoming a sort of fin-de-ciecle James Bond. Go figure.
Memoirs of a Geisha. I've never read it because the movie looked so cheesy (never seen it) that it made me not want to read the book.
Elisabeth wrote: "Karina wrote: "Just started Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I hope it is better than Jane Eyre, which her sister wrote and I throughly disliked it."I think Wuthering Heights is bet..."
Whereas I adored Jane Eyre and disliked Wuthering Heights. It makes me really appreciate how different we all are!

I've just started Thursbitch by Alan Garner and at the moment i'm not sure what to make of this one. The beginning is quite random (written in local dialect which is hard to understand) then it just sort of plunges off in another direction without much explanation but either way its only a short read.
