I also started this book today. I've had it for so many years and for some reason had never opened it. It's my first Thomas Hardy, and I adore Victorian literature, so I'm excited. :)

Well, I loved it, and I hope you do too!

Kelley | Foxwood Press I just requested "What Maisie Knew" from the library, but I'm picking up "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day" tomorrow. I've only read 17 out of the 1001, so I have a long way to go.

I didn't either. Gave up on it not far into it. Boring! Most enjoy it though...

message 3710: by El (new)

El I've been reading Ellison's Invisible Man. Jury is out on this one, but I'm not quite halfway through yet so I'll try to withhold judgment.

In that case, I just began The Mysteries of Udolpho."

And not done yet, will read it through April. Loving it.

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 154 comments Delta of Venus by Anais Nin...hmmm, it's not quite what I expected...which was, oh I don't know, perhaps a more explicit Virginia Woolf? (it's NOT!) Stories are very hit/miss so far--tally is 1/8. Did enjoy the preface very much.

message 3717: by Luciana (new)

Luciana I started The Mill on the Floss yesterday and so far I'm loving it!

I was really doubtful about this when i first started reading it but after about 40 pages i was hooked and ended up loving it. A new take on the dystopian novel. V good!

I'm half way finished, but still holding back on whether I really like it or not. The writing is quite good, but I have trouble tracking with the narrator's perceptions...Irish terms are a real problem, not being able to identify with much of what he feels is another. I'll keep you posted.

Genia Lukin | 205 comments I've just moved The Elegance of the Hedgehog from my to-read pile to my reading-now table. I am somewhat dreading it; I've heard it was heavy-handed, pretentious, and overwrought.

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I just started The Book of Laughter and Forgetting by Milan Kundera.

message 3733: by Karina (new)

Karina | 401 comments Just started Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I hope it is better than Jane Eyre, which her sister wrote and I throughly disliked it.

I think Wuthering Heights is better. It is still very dark, but I loved it and though Jane Eyre was just ok, lol

message 3736: by Emily (new)

Emily (purpleemily) | 40 comments @ Cindy - I just started Les Miz as well. Only on page 100 and is slow going for me since I can really only read during lunch. Trying really hard to hang in there and don't want to be on it for months and months.

@ Karina and Elisabeth - Really? Wuthering Heights is better? Granted, I have not read the book, seen the movie, but I really did like Jane Eyre.

Oooh, fantastic Emily! I've only done Book 1 of Fantine so far, but I'm loving the character development.

I'm doing it as a part of a group read in a different group - we have a 3-month schedule with weekly discussions. If you're interested, drop me a message, and I can share the details. :)

I would love to know more. I'm worried, though. Like I said, I only really have time to read at lunch at work (if that) I work 2 jobs so reading time is minimal. That being said, I need to got off-line so that I can read some before bed! But, give me some more information, because it might be a little more incentive to keep plugging away!

message 3739: by Asa (new)

Asa | 65 comments John Buchan's The 39 Steps - it's seems like a fun and easy read.

message 3740: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments It was. It's a nice adventure story, the ur-spy novel, in its own way. What I didn't know and only found out while reading this book is that there's a whole series of them, with the protagonist becoming a sort of fin-de-ciecle James Bond. Go figure.

message 3741: by Haley (new)

Haley (haley_hemen) | 9 comments Just started Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides. I'm really liking the epic scope of the book so far.

message 3742: by Shay (new)

Shay | 71 comments Memoirs of a Geisha. I've never read it because the movie looked so cheesy (never seen it) that it made me not want to read the book.

I will pass judgement on it once I finish the book. I am having a hard time getting into it!

message 3748: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments I've just started Thursbitch by Alan Garner and at the moment i'm not sure what to make of this one. The beginning is quite random (written in local dialect which is hard to understand) then it just sort of plunges off in another direction without much explanation but either way its only a short read.

message 3749: by Asa (new)

Asa | 65 comments I've started reading Hammett's The Maltese Falcon.

message 3750: by Jenbebookish (new)

Jenbebookish | 5 comments I just read thru Margaret atwoods works. I'm not sure which are on the list but they all should be!! She is brilliant, & she alone has restored my faith in modern day lit. Obsession alert!!
