Cool! Maybe we can talk a bit about it next week. I used to work at a redbrick college in the UK, so it's really hitting home.

Ruth (miss_spookiness) | 12 comments I've just started Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy...can't say much about it so far though, as I'm only on page 5!! :)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Jane Austen 'Sense and Sensibility' - so far I don't like it as much as 'Pride and Prejudice'.

There is nothing by Rand on either of the lists.

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I just started Survivor for a work book club. Not on the list, but I've heard both good and bad about Chuck Palahniuk, so I'm looking forward to it.

Palahniuk can be an acquired taste and is definitely not for everyone. Let me know how it works out for you

message 1611: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Survivor is the only Palahniuk book that I have tried to read, and I couldn't even get through the first chapter. i'm afraid to try again.

message 1613: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Margaret - I think that may be the case. A lot of people have told me that. Do you have another that you would recommend. Nothing to graphic?

message 1614: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kang | 1 comments I just stated to re-read 'Thing Fall Apart-Chinua Achebe' for writing an essay..

message 1615: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Started Roderick Random by Smollett last night, borrowed the book from the library. Had a look to see when this book was last taken out and was amazed that it was last stamped in may 1979. Fun book and typical of the period, reads a lot like Tom Jones, basically a series of adventures in which the hero finds himself.

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I started and finished Waugh's "A Handful of Dust" this weekend.

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments I started Lanark A Life in Four Books last night. I'm trying Anna Karenina on my iPhone. And I think I'm going to be working on Ulysses with Gifford's Ulysses Annotated. My boyfriend and I may read the Ulysses together.

I've gotten pretty compulsive about reading things off this list, hence the mania to try and read more than one at once.

I've had this book on hold at the library since June. I really want to read it as I really enjoyed The Moonstone.

I'm reading an English translation. It seems very good. It was all the rave in Europe when it came out and men dressed like the character. It also made Goethe a celebrity author.

Interesting! I had to read Werther when I was in high school in Switzerland - so I read the German. It was pretty tough going, but led to interesting discussions. I'll be very curious to hear what you thought of it!

"The Cellar" by Richard Laymon.

I really love his books and this one is one of his best ones!

Susanna (jb_slasher) The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

message 1649: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Started Northanger Abbey today. So far so good.

message 1650: by Gini (new)

Gini | 138 comments Margaret, I thought this was in the "finished" thread - my mistake. I love Regency and Victorian lit, but thought Return of the Native to be dour fare. I wouldn't have finished it, save that I was listening to the audiobook read by Alan Rickman - that voice made it tolerable.
