I recently began Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. He was one of my all-time favorite authors, and I decided to try and knock out all his novels on the list.
I'm starting The Thirteenth Tale tonight. I don't think it's on the list, but the wife is telling me I just HAVE to read it.

Judit wrote: I normally love this author's work, but did not take to "The City of God".Judith--I'm going to start City of God soon, and have never read any Doctorow before. I will keep your comment in mind in case I don't like it.
I also just started City of God. I'm having trouble with it already. It just doesn't seem to be focused. I guess the group discussion will be interesting for those who manage to finish it (which right now I'm wondering if I will).
I am currently in the middle of Emma, Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Count of Monte Cristo (LOVE IT), and Middlemarch. All of course very well-written. All *very* different!

I'm getting nervous because I keep reading mixed reviews on City of God. It seems to be a very polarizing book. Either you love it your you hate it.
I just started The Thirteenth Tale. I'm pretty sure it was a book club selection this past fall. Or maybe that was the other group...
I'm reading Huckleberry Finn and Sherlock Holmes (the latter is a very large heavy tome that I can't carry around on public transport). I'm reading more north american literature than I have every read in the past - previously, my choices have been UK or Australian authors.
Derrick wrote: "I just started The Thirteenth Tale. I'm pretty sure it was a book club selection this past fall. Or maybe that was the other group..."I've had that one on my shelf for ages, I can't wait to hear what you think of it.

The wife absolutely loved it, as did a girlfriend. I'm about 70-ish pages into it (slow reader) and not feeling it yet.

Oh, I just started The Thirteenth Tale about a week ago and I love it! I'm about 150 pages into it.. it's kind of weird, but it's absolutely great... let me know what you think of it so far.. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.. where did you hear about it? On the list? I didn't see it on there...
Emma wrote: "I've begun The Secret History. It's on loan from Bookswim."I've been meaning to pick up that one.. it's been sitting on my bookshelf for about a year now. I've heard wonderful things about it... it's been compared to Dead Poet's Society.. and I loved that one..
My mom read The Secret History a while ago and tried to make me read it. I couldn't get past the first page for some reason. But I'll be revisiting it very soon (maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it then).

If I didn't hear it from this book club group then i would've probably gotten it from The Complete Idiots Guide to the Ultimate Reading List group. Same sort of book, much shorter list. A lot of repeats. Between that list and this list I developed my to-read list, plus it gets me reading lots of things I otherwise would skip participating in the group reads.
I am currently in the middle of We, which is the inspiration for George Orwell's 1984, and a bit for Brave New World by Huxley. On my list to start shortly is City of God for discussion, and 1984, along wit Never Let Me Go.
Loved 13th Tale - pretty sure its not on the 1001 list but its a great read. I jsut started City of God. Very interesting. Only 25 pgs in so I'm reserving judgment for now.
Katie wrote: "I just started Rebecca. It's quite good so far, the tension is very well done. "I finished Rebecca last month and was sorry I didn't read it earlier in life. It really is a masterpiece. The author's use of the house and its surroundings as a character is really cool. Enjoy!
Started Delta of Venus and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Needed something a little lighter to give myself a break from Gravity's Rainbow and Don Quixote every once in a while.
I'm just over 100 pages into War And Peace. It's good so far but I still feel daunted whenever I look at the size of it.
I am currently reading Tortilla Flat, which is not on the list. After that I am starting The Master and Margarita, which is.
I just started Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. It's a shame I haven't read it yet, considering I devoured the Hitchhiker's series years ago.
Emma wrote: "It's on loan from Bookswim."Sorry that this is off topic but I'd love to know how you like Bookswim - I'm thinking of giving it as a gift. Are the books in good condition?
Stacie wrote: "I am currently reading Tortilla Flat, which is not on the list. After that I am starting The Master and Margarita, which is."The Master and Margarita is one of my favorite books of all time, but I recommend an annotated edition if you can find one (unless you have extensive academic knowledge of Biblical lore). It's a darkly funny, and at times "trippy" story, but there are a lot of allusions I wouldn't have understood without the footnotes.
I'm 71 pages into City of God for April 15 and starting to enjoy it but I've been more excited to get my nose back into other books on the list. I'm also still re-reading The House in Paris, though why I'm not sure; the discussion has never been terribly lively.Libby, I'll start a new topic for Bookswim and let you know what I think. I could just private message you but maybe other people would want to know too...Thanks for asking!

I'm 126 pages into City of God - sort of enjoying it but not really sure what I think... Looking forward to the discussion of this one!
