Alicia (amazingact21) | 3 comments I recently began Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. He was one of my all-time favorite authors, and I decided to try and knock out all his novels on the list.

Keep going it is worth it. There is quite a lot of symbolism going on though, but don't be put off! And remember Oskar is an unreliable narrator.

I normally love this author's work, but did not take to "The City of God". I'll be glad to read what you think of it. I've wondered if I should try it again...

message 1112: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I just started 1984.

Judith--I'm going to start City of God soon, and have never read any Doctorow before. I will keep your comment in mind in case I don't like it.

message 1115: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I also just started City of God. I'm having trouble with it already. It just doesn't seem to be focused. I guess the group discussion will be interesting for those who manage to finish it (which right now I'm wondering if I will).

message 1116: by Arianna (new)

Arianna (arianna81) | 6 comments I am currently in the middle of Emma, Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Count of Monte Cristo (LOVE IT), and Middlemarch. All of course very well-written. All *very* different!

If I finish Daemon by Daniel Suarez today then I'll start City of God tomorrow. I'm getting nervous because I keep reading mixed reviews on City of God. It seems to be a very polarizing book. Either you love it your you hate it.

message 1118: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 87 comments I just started The Thirteenth Tale. I'm pretty sure it was a book club selection this past fall. Or maybe that was the other group...

message 1119: by Andreea (new)

Andreea (andreeagintaru) | 1 comments I've just started Publius Ovidius Naso's 'Metamorphoses'

message 1120: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I'm reading Huckleberry Finn and Sherlock Holmes (the latter is a very large heavy tome that I can't carry around on public transport). I'm reading more north american literature than I have every read in the past - previously, my choices have been UK or Australian authors.

Kate (kateduttera) Derrick wrote: "I just started The Thirteenth Tale. I'm pretty sure it was a book club selection this past fall. Or maybe that was the other group..."

I've had that one on my shelf for ages, I can't wait to hear what you think of it.

message 1122: by Kate (new)

Kate (kateduttera) I just started Rebecca. It's quite good so far, the tension is very well done.

Oh, I just started The Thirteenth Tale about a week ago and I love it! I'm about 150 pages into it.. it's kind of weird, but it's absolutely great... let me know what you think of it so far.. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.. where did you hear about it? On the list? I didn't see it on there...

Jess | 3 comments Emma wrote: "I've begun The Secret History. It's on loan from Bookswim."

I've been meaning to pick up that one.. it's been sitting on my bookshelf for about a year now. I've heard wonderful things about it... it's been compared to Dead Poet's Society.. and I loved that one..

message 1130: by Gaston (new)

Gaston | 26 comments The Sound and the Fury-Faulkner

message 1131: by Jessica (new)

Jessica My mom read The Secret History a while ago and tried to make me read it. I couldn't get past the first page for some reason. But I'll be revisiting it very soon (maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it then).

I am sorta enjoying it, I'm about 80-ish pages into it right now. If I didn't hear it from this book club group then i would've probably gotten it from The Complete Idiots Guide to the Ultimate Reading List group. Same sort of book, much shorter list. A lot of repeats. Between that list and this list I developed my to-read list, plus it gets me reading lots of things I otherwise would skip participating in the group reads.

message 1134: by Susan (new)

Susan | 28 comments I am currently in the middle of We, which is the inspiration for George Orwell's 1984, and a bit for Brave New World by Huxley. On my list to start shortly is City of God for discussion, and 1984, along wit Never Let Me Go.

message 1135: by Libby (new)

Libby | 39 comments Loved 13th Tale - pretty sure its not on the 1001 list but its a great read.

I jsut started City of God. Very interesting. Only 25 pgs in so I'm reserving judgment for now.

Libby | 39 comments Katie wrote: "I just started Rebecca. It's quite good so far, the tension is very well done. "

I finished Rebecca last month and was sorry I didn't read it earlier in life. It really is a masterpiece. The author's use of the house and its surroundings as a character is really cool. Enjoy!

message 1137: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Started Delta of Venus and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Needed something a little lighter to give myself a break from Gravity's Rainbow and Don Quixote every once in a while.

message 1138: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (happy_squirrel) I'm just over 100 pages into War And Peace.
It's good so far but I still feel daunted whenever I look at the size of it.

Eliza (elizac) | 72 comments I am also starting City of God today

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) In the Forest by Edna O'brien.

message 1143: by Jessica (new)

Libby | 39 comments Emma wrote: "It's on loan from Bookswim."

Sorry that this is off topic but I'd love to know how you like Bookswim - I'm thinking of giving it as a gift. Are the books in good condition?

message 1145: by Erica (new)

Erica Stacie wrote: "I am currently reading Tortilla Flat, which is not on the list. After that I am starting The Master and Margarita, which is."

The Master and Margarita is one of my favorite books of all time, but I recommend an annotated edition if you can find one (unless you have extensive academic knowledge of Biblical lore). It's a darkly funny, and at times "trippy" story, but there are a lot of allusions I wouldn't have understood without the footnotes.

message 1146: by Katie ATX (new)

Katie ATX (katieatx) | 74 comments I just started A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch. Seems like it will be a fairly quick read.

message 1147: by Emma (last edited Apr 07, 2009 09:46PM) (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments I'm 71 pages into City of God for April 15 and starting to enjoy it but I've been more excited to get my nose back into other books on the list. I'm also still re-reading The House in Paris, though why I'm not sure; the discussion has never been terribly lively.

Libby, I'll start a new topic for Bookswim and let you know what I think. I could just private message you but maybe other people would want to know too...Thanks for asking!

It's taken me about 50 pages to City of God. something keeps pulling me back to it but I haven't decided whether I'm enjoying it or not.
