So far the book is getting better - I know some people have said they've had problems with the timeline jumping around, but I've not found that to be an issue. I'm finding the characters more endearing the further I read....glad to hear you loved it! Gives me hope! LOL :)
Aly

I just started The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Might not be on the list, but it did win the Pulitzer. So far I like it.

And Aly, 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' is one of my favourites as well. I love John Irving's writing and Garp, Owen Meany and Ciderhouse Rules are three books that I can just read over and over :-)

akaellen, re 100 Years of Solitude, I'm having to go back and remember, who's Prudencio Aguilar or which Arcadio are we dealing with here? I read a review elsewhere where someone had difficulty keeping García Márquez names straight and I pooh-poohed it. Little did I know...

Still loved all three though ...

I set myself the task of reading so many pages a day unless I really get into the book and can't stop.
I'd also just finished Genji which was 1150 pages so 820 doesn't seem so bad.
As for Spain I've not been there yet, but I'm going back home to the UK so I hope to spend more time travelling in Europe. Barcelona and Madrid are on my list, not interested in the Costa del sol.

So, needless to say, I have pretty big expectations of this one.

I just started Europe Central by Vollman and Justine, the first of the Alexandria Quartet, by Lawrence Durrell.

The difference between the male and female versions is apparantly about 17 sentences in the yellow or jewish book.
It was an interesting how the history of the Khazars is portrayed depending on the religion of the various writers ,( christian, islamic and jewish) It's a reminder of how different people see things.

War the Worlds. I'm reading it to my son.

... and a big LOL @ Niche for, "but I keep getting distracted by those damn vampire books." I know how you feel! =)

The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan (GR Author)
I'm really enjoying it so far. Reminds me of Brandon Sanderson who I enjoyed quite a bit.
