Christine (patsaintsfan) | 1 comments My name is Christine. I sure am enjoying snooping around in this group! I'd love more friends from this group so I can get even more insight into new books to read! Please feel free to add me! I enjoy all types of books, and I usually have a few going at one time. It's easier to feed whichever book appetite I'm craving at the moment! On a personal note, I love my four legged kids more than most humans, and I love fostering baby kittens! I miss my family terribly. And I love football season!

message 6563: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I've been reading The Forsyte Saga for the last few days. According to my Kindle, I'm about 18% of the way through. If it were not for this group I probably would have dropped it by now because I am nearly bored out of my mind. But, I am really trying to stick with it. I am really interested to find out how things turn out with old Jolyon and his son and Irene and Bosinney, etc., but there are so many characters and side tracks!

Does anyone have any encouraging news about further along in this book, or am I the only one reading it?

message 6564: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I read it and loved it, but that was about 10 years ago. I don't recall if the beginning felt slow. A lot does happen - I can promise that. Not sure if that helps.

message 6565: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 122 comments I recently read the Saga too...and recommend you stick with it. I know what you mean about a few areas getting bogged down... but there a plenty of twists. I felt that Galsworthy did a good job in helping the reader keep the many characters straight in my mind. I was rarely confused. It did help that I was on vacation and could devote a lot of time to reading the whole novel in a few days.

message 6566: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I read the entire 9 novels plus interludes nearly 2 years ago and was drawn in from the first, so my experience is different than yours.

I'm working on this one too. I'm almost done with part 3. I think the first part was rough because there was a lot on introduction. I can see it picking up a little. I think the Soames and Irene relationship is what's keeping me going. Keep going!

I am reading The Big Sleep, too. I am about 65% done, and it has been very helpful for me to remember the time period it was written in. :^)

I started it on the 18th on my Kindle, and shortly after it broke after it took a great fall. My sis then gave me her old Kindle, so I was back and running a week later. But I restarted for exactly the reason that I felt I wouldn't keep the characters straight after that time off. About 40% of the way through the Saga now, I think I feel that the characters that are important to know distinctly you WILL be able to distinguish. And the others are more minor, and even though differentiated by the author, they more add to the tone/background.

I am really enjoying it, myself, although it seemed to take a little to get "into" it. It didn't grab or hook, just kind of wormed its way in... Can't wait til we discuss this in more depth in a few weeks when we are all finished....

message 6571: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I am very encouraged by everyone's responses to The Forsyte Saga! I am definitely following along a little easier now and I am still really interested in finding out what happens with this family. I guess the fact that I often have to read in 5 - 10 minute snippets because of my kids and husband makes it hard to get into a new book :) I need to start devoting larger chunks of time to starting new books - I'll add that to my list of goals!

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks of this book soon!
