Started The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Stein, full of painters and writers from 1907-1932. Amongst the people are Wyndham Lewis, Sassoon, Hemingway, Picasso, Ford Madox Ford and Matisse. Feels like a who's who of people from this period.
I have been listening to an annotated version of Delta of Venus by Anais Nin and reading The Man of Feeling by Henry MacKenzie. I had not realized Delta of Venus was annotated until after I got it, but I think I am okay with marking it as read once I am done with what I have! I don't know why, but I expected it to be much more...subtle. Silly me.
Picked up at the library: The Sea, the Seaand American Rust. Plan on starting them within next few days.
Just picked up Siddhartha for 50 cents. I didn't realize it was such a short work so I figured I'd read it and knock it off quickly.
I just started The Waves by Virginia Woolf and I completely surprised by its format (since I just finished The Voyage Out recently) but I am loving the descriptions so far. It may take me longer to read than expected.
I recently finished the Golden Notebook Rebecca. CAn't wait to hear what you think. I enjoyed it, though it can be a lot to take in. Rebecca wrote: "I'm not done with Doctor Faustus yet, but I started Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook today."
Just started "The Blind Assassin" by Margaret Atwood. I just loved her "The Handmaid Tale's" book, so my expectations are high!
I really loved Suite Francaise! I'm spending this summer reading through all of my list books so I can donate them to my sister-in-law's used bookstore; this one I kept!
Started 1984 last night, already mind boggled. Started Return of the Native a week ago, not getting very far yet, & have started The Tin Drum...I think I'll get through 1984 fastest...
Mikela wrote: "Have just begun Swann's Way so expect to be lost for awhile."I'm on the second volume of In Search of Lost Time. We can be lost together! : )
Reading Amsterdam and enjoying it. Been a while since I read a 1001 book, time to get back into the rhythm of it.
Just started The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. I've been reading a lot of brit lit so it's time to read some American Lit. Still trying to finish Nicholas Nickleby! It's just so hard to keep interested in!
Mikela wrote: "Hopefully they will send a search party out for us in a month or so."I finished the whole thing recently, so I'll take responsibility for wading back in and finding you if you break down somewhere in the middle. :)
Went to the library yesterday, picked up a good haul :) Came back with the following, in no particular order:Wise Children-Carter
Glamorama-Ellis
Moon Palace-Auster
Blonde-Oates
The Way of All Flesh-Butler
& have Delta of Venus on order from another library in my county.
Also in the works, I'm shifting through both The Tin Drum-Grass, & Return of the Native-Hardy. Finding Tin Drum rougher going than Return of the Native, even with that one's old dialect. Guess it helps that I'm married to a Brit, LOL.
Started A Clockwork Orange. So far finding it very good and not really finding the language hard which is surprising.
Just starting Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey. Looking forward to some good Pacific Northwest literature!
Arukiyomi wrote: "Hope you don't find it as Unbearable as I did Deborah!"LOL. I hope not. I hope I love it like Cynthia did!
In anticipation of our August group read, Out of Africa, I've begun The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights. I read on her author profile that Dinesen was inspired by Arabian Nights, the Bible, Hans Christian Anderson, etc.
Just going to have another go at Vanity Fair One of those books that I know I should have read (and loved) but have so far not successfully trudged through...
I'd be interested to hear what you think of that Deanne as I have a copy of that waiting for me back in the UK when I get there in November.
Started Delta of Venus, & getting ready to sit down & start Blonde-by Joyce Carol Oates. Lost interest in Tin Drum again, & put Hardy away for a bit too. Blonde is a library book, & so is Moon Palace-Auster, so I'm going to read those first :)
Started Cloud Atlas but uni is quite busy at the moment so it might be a bit slow going as I don't have much time.
Riona wrote: "Genia wrote: "Starting The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and Persuasion."I loved The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Forgot it was a list book!"
I'm reading this one also. Am really enjoying it!
Last night I started The Last Chronicle of Barset, the last book in the series. The first chapter recalls characters from Framley Parsonage and I can see in the chapter titles characters fromThe Small House at Allington. I suspect this is Trollope truly winding up everthing from the first 5 books.
I started Dostoyevsky's Notes From Underground a few days ago. I like it, but I need to devote more time to it.
Arukiyomi wrote: "I'd be interested to hear what you think of that Deanne as I have a copy of that waiting for me back in the UK when I get there in November."Started slowly and I was a little confused as to where Mulisch was going with this. However the further I've got the more I've understood. The characters Max and Onno have grown on me, and QuQu is the sort of character I wish was someone I know.
Discovery of Heaven is entertaining, profound, has moments of humour and I have to admit has made me cry at least once.
I think when you get back here in november you should make sure you've finished anythingelse your reading, and get your copy out.
