Calyre wrote: "I'm reading The Midwich Cuckoos. Sci-fi for a change."Me too!! I loved the beginning, I felt it lost steam at about the half way point, but it's picking up again.
I'm a little ways into The Portrait of a Lady and so far am liking it. I like the main character Isabel, and am fearful that things are going to turn out badly for her.

I read this book & reviewed it. I think he pulled it off just fine :)
Katherine wrote: "I've just begun A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. As it stands, I'm really liking it, despite the endless references to 19th century Irish politics that I really don't get. Ma..."Yeah, I found that one hard to wade through too, even though I got the political references for the most part since in college my history prof was Irish, LOL
Sons and Lovers by D.H. Lawrence. I am really suprised by how hooked I am when I read this. On the surface, it appears that not much is going on, but looking a little deeper, the family dynamic is drawing me in.
Ali Smith's The Accidental. It's giving me a real sense of foreboding: I hope I am wrong, but I have a horrible feeling that the ending is going to disappoint me.
try reading all the 1915 books together...gives a good frame for the political climate in several countries.
Next on my plate is Père Goriot. I loved Eugenie Grandet, and expect to enjoy this as much if not more.
Elizabeth wrote: "try reading all the 1915 books together...gives a good frame for the political climate in several countries."Great idea! I've done a little of that kind of grouping (books about India at or near her independence from the UK), and it really does add to the historical experience.
I'm started The Sound and the Fury - William Faulkner on Monday. I am 15% done and enjoying it. I put Blind Man with a Pistol - Chester Himes aside as it began to bore me. I plan to pick it back up though.
I'm halfway through The Island of Dr. Moreau. So far, it's being interesting enough. I'm guessing the second half is going to be more gruesome.
Ethan Frome is next for me. Nope, it wasn't in my high school curriculum, so it's a first read for me.
I've just started Foundation by Isaac Asimov. Not a big sci-fi fan, but my boyfriend loves this book so I've borrowed his copy and am going to give it a try.Really, really different from my last read - Gone With the Wind. :)
Judith wrote: "By Allende:Of Love and Shadows" I adored Isabel Allende's books so much I read all of her books, list works or not :)
I am just beginning Catcher in the Rye-so far Holden Caulfield reminds me a LOT of my oldest son Paul, who dropped out of high school, even though he did go back & get his GED. Holden makes me want to grab him by the collar & SHAKE him till his lazy teeth RATTLE!!!! I HOPE this book gets better. So far he doesn't seem to have ANY redeeming qualities. He's lazy, sullen, makes excuses for things he's done, not to mention just plain rude & disrespectful...
Calyre wrote: "Starting The Waves by Virginia Woolf."Oooo, this is one of my favorite recent 1001 book list reads. Beautiful, beautiful prose.
Started Infinite Jest by Wallace, it's been on the shelf for a while and I thought I'd give it a go.
You're taking on some tough ones lately. Hope this one goes well!Deanne wrote: "Started Infinite Jest by Wallace, it's been on the shelf for a while and I thought I'd give it a go."
Have just begun Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure.Started reading it on our Wedding Anniversary - not sure what that says!
Judith wrote: "The Voyage Out- Virginia Woolf"I've just started this one as well. What do you think so far?
About to re-start 'The Idiot' by Dostoevsky. Briefly began it last summer but got distracted and never finished. Looking forward to it though.
