message 5252: by Linda (new)

Linda JS Fathers and Sons by Turgenev. A short Russian novel seems like an oxymoron - I was intrigued...

message 5262: by Maryellen (new)

Maryellen | 29 comments Just starting The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford- enjoying very much

message 5263: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Started Finding Time Again vol 7 of In Search of Lost Time. Also slotted two quick books in Love's work by Rose and Rituals by Nooteboom. It maybe coincidence but both books mention ISOLT, Rituals talks about M de Charlus a character from ISOLT. Whilst in Love's Work one of the characters reads ISOLT once a year. Enjoyed reading ISOLT so much that I'm not looking forward to finishing it.

message 5264: by Monica (new)

Monica (ritabook) | 10 comments Now 30 pages into Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick. I've read a few of his other novels and stories so am excited for this little adventure. The plan is to finally watch Blade Runner when I am done.

message 5265: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments I am starting The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, I will go on record as saying, I loved the Hitchhiker series, but just don't LIKE this series. I attempted another Rushdie book, Midnight's Children, & even though it makes more SENSE than the others I've read, I still am NOT a Rushdie fan. Also reading Go Down Moses by Faulkner, & am completely enjoying it. Have on deck The Dispossessed by LeGuin, as well as Tender is the Night, by Fitzgerald.

Recently finished The Optimist's Daughter by Welty & The Bluest Eye by Morrison. Both were fast reads, & I enjoyed them both!

message 5269: by Dana (new)

Dana Arbelaez (danas_reads) | 25 comments Just started Flaubert's Parrot last night, and I'm already almost done with it! Highly entertaining so far, although I suppose in an intellectual, farcical way.

message 5270: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I am starting Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. My contemporary literature class voted to add it to our syllabus because the professor kept comparing our readings to it/offering excerpts as examples. I've seen the Kubrick film, but already know I am in for a new literary experience with this one!

message 5271: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Started Adjunct: An undigest by Manson, hard book to track down and I've seen one copy of Amazon for an inflated price, tried the library and bookshops but no joy. Finally bought a copy from the publisher at a tenth of the price I'd seen for a second-hand copy.

message 5272: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments Just started The Crime of Father Amaro: Scenes from the Religious Life and so far am finding it surprisingly readable.

Deanne, I've tried valiantly to buy a book from the publisher via their website, but to no avail - maybe they only ship within the UK? (I'm in Canada).

I've ordered, re-ordered, sent them an email to inquire...crickets. I wish they would just tell me if they can't ship to me - grrrr, very frustrating!

message 5274: by Tara (new)

Tara A (quartinsession) | 59 comments On another note, I'm almost halfway through The Satanic Verses. Very dense and challenging, but I am actually enjoying it....I guess magical realism is my style.

I took the advice of strangers on the internet and read Midnight's Children first to introduce myself to Rushdie's style in a bit more of an accessible way, and then I did some background reading on the history of Islam and the story of Mohammed and the satanic verses. That was crucial - I feel like I'm 'getting' much more than I would be otherwise.

message 5275: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 162 comments I'm in Hungary reading Fatelessness by Imre Kertész.

Good strategy. Wish I had done it. I love Rushdie and could have gotten much more out of the book, I think if I had done a little background reading.

Rachel (Sfogs) | 226 comments Just started Nicholas Nickleby today.
I'm enjoying it so far, though a bit daunted by it's size and the tiny writting in my copy. But I can now say I've started my first book by Charles Dickens! :P

message 5284: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments Currently reading House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. If anyone has previously been put off this by its reputation I'd say don't be afraid and give it a go (I ignored this book on my shelf for the best part of 18 months so know the feeling!).
