The 'C' key on my keyboard keeps getting stuck. You have no idea how many times I misspelled Chess as hess lol.

My get up and go got up and went...
I'm working on getting it back.
How about you?

{laughs} I'm not certain why, but my mind immediately went to 'hessian' when I read that - Chess the hessian. {gives my own thoughts a dubious look} Why...?

message 1375: by the_rabid_snail (new)

the_rabid_snail | 17 comments I’ve been lost in books lately. I’m almost done reading about Dr H H Holmes, and then I’m diving right back into Sherlock Holmes, Joseph Conrad, and HP Lovecraft. Then I’m starting Dune. Finally.

Lol I have no idea how that popped into your head. I’m just glad it did :)

message 1376: by Chess (new)

Chess | 71 comments {grins}
That sounds awesome!
I'm always impressed by your literary picks... {raises an eyebrow} I take it you've been looking forward to reading Dune for awhile?
I wish my library still had older fiction, but the new head librarian (she's been around now for a few years, but she's still the 'new' librarian in my head) has been weeding anything that wasn't checked out in over a year out of the shelves, so most of the classics got chucked - much to the despair of quite a few of the other librarians and patrons, including myself. Just because they hadn't gotten checked out didn't mean they didn't get read... I'm still sad they got rid of the entire Wizard of Oz series, other than the actual Wizard of Oz. {mopes mournfully} They were all hardcovers, too... It's really hard to find those suckers anymore.

{grins crookedly and shrugs}

message 1377: by the_rabid_snail (new)

the_rabid_snail | 17 comments Thanks! I mean, I’ll read almost anything, so I don’t know if my choices are always impressive. I just read what catches my interest. I know, I know. I shouldn’t judge books by their covers, but sometimes it pays off lol.

That’s so sad! My library isn’t that great either. It’s just about impossible to find ya or fantasy that’s not some sappy boy meets girl plot line.

message 1378: by Chess (new)

Chess | 71 comments {grins} Hey, that works...!
{laughs and nods in agreement} For me, if the cover isn't interesting, the book summary better be fascinating or it's going back on the shelf.

{winces with a chuckle}
{lets out a growled groan}
Agreed...
I've lost track of how many books I've picked out because the cover and/or the title looked interesting, only to promptly put it right back because the summary or the front cover was blaring about 'forbidden romance', 'love triangle', or some other similar theme. {drags hands down cheeks with an exasperated noise} Tsch. There are a few kind of amazing times when the author can perfectly (more or less) balance plot with romance, and that can work too - Poison, Seven Realms, and Monsters of Verity are a few that come to mind - and that's cool. I can live with ignore romance, if it's just there and not the blaring plot of the entire book (or series). But truly, how often does that happen?

message 1379: by the_rabid_snail (new)

the_rabid_snail | 17 comments Same here.

Exactly! I think Brandon Sanderson is pretty good at keeping romance to the side lines. I can’t ever remember a time where there was an actual love triangle in any of his books that I’ve read. Speaking of him, I just found out that there are more Mistborn books! I mean, they’re set in the future, but I still want to read them.

Me either...
{raises eyebrows}

Chess | 71 comments I've got to go... have a great rest of your day, Snail!

message 1382: by the_rabid_snail (new)

the_rabid_snail | 17 comments Yeah, he's definitely a favorite author of mine. I love the complex, fantasy worlds he creates. I checked Elantris out of the library the other day, so I'm hoping to read it soon. The premise sounds quite interesting.

Orson Scott Card has a good series that I like: Pathfinder. Very minimal romance and such. The way time travel is explored can kind of mess with your mind a little, but I think it's in a good way. You just shouldn't read it if you're having trouble focusing, or you'll end up reading the same page like five times to get what's going on.
