"Later, when memory was all she had to sustain her, she would come to cherish it: Old Honolulu as it was then, as it would never be again."
So begins Moloka'i by Aland Brennert. I cannot wait to delve into this tonight.

1. The book's opening paragraph likens Hawaii in the 19th century to a garden. In what way is Hawaii comparable to another Biblical garden?

2. Given what was known at the time of the causes and contagion of leprosy, was the Hawaiian government's isolation of patients on Moloka'i justified or not?

3. How is Hawaii's treatment of leprosy patients similar to today's treatments SARS and AIDS patients? how is it different?

4. What does 'ohana mean? How does it manifest itself throughout Rachel's life?

5. What does surfing represent to Rachel?

Wow! What a passionate discussion we had tonight on this fabulous book.
The overall consensus was the rich history and the great character development made this a great read.
The central character, Rachel Kalama, resonated such strength and depth that everyone felt connected with her some way. Her journey through life, though a tough one, is filled will triumphs, love, and joys in unexpected places.
The group ratings was 4.65 stars out of five. Our highest rated book to date.
Can't wait to review this on my own.
Thanks to all who attended tonight's discussion and to any who couldn't make it, please leave us your thoughts and comments. We're always up for more opinions and thoughts.

Carolina Spanolla | 6 comments I really enjoyed this book! The main character Rachel really did have such an amazing strength and her capacity to love was inspiring. I rated it five stars as well and am so glad this was a book group selection.
I don't think I would have ever read it if it hadn't been the group book and I really would have missed out on a great book. So THANK YOU! :)
