Okay, I wanted to start a place to talk about anything and everything, since I have a questions that don't quite need its own topic...but I wanted some feedback!

Have any of you tried those book programs that offer unlimited book reading each month. Basically Netflix for books? They keep popping up on my Facebook page, but I do not know if it is something even worth getting the free month of.... Any thoughts?

message 2: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany McFly (tiffmcfly) Do you know what the program is called? I have never heard of it, it seems interesting!

The two I have heard of are Oyster and Scribd.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments Scribd used to be free and you can download pdf for free.

On their page now it says it is 8.99. I wonder if it was getting more popular so they added a cost? Hmmmm

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments Signs of times lol. I remember I used to get a lot of free stuff from Scribd. PDF but that was before mobi and epubs anyway.

Kind of lame they changed it! I'm not sure it is worth the cost, esp considering all the books I currently own that I still need to read, but I wonder if once my "library" starts to get lower if it is something worth getting....

Marika | 187 comments Does anyone have an Audible account and if so How do you feel about it? I've recently started listening to audible books while working out, doing chores, or when I want to just relax, close my eyes and have someone read to me.

message 9: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Here is a very Random thought... Has anyone read a book and really wanted it to go on? I remember reading Sunshine by Robin McKinley and even tho the ending was satisfactory I wanted a second book! I read somewhere on her website that this was only a one off book and had no intention of writing a second. Has this ever happened to someone else? Does this turn u off that writer? I wouldn't say it turned me away from other books by McKinley but I don't think I've read another book of hers... Whether this is subconsciously done can't tell u :)

As soon as I read this I was reminded of a book I read a few years ago! It was about a town that got surrounded my some weird mist that somehow lead to another relm maybe? They did not get much of the info, but it all started when a big bomb went off so they were trying to help people and survive without outside contact and all that. But, then it ended and NOTHING AT ALL was resolved. It was as if Under The Dome ended after only the first few chapters! I cannot think of the book now, but for months I tried to look up more about the book to no avail. It made me really disappointed since the first book was pretty interesting and at that point I had never read anything quite like it before. I might think of the book at sound point, but it for sure made me REALLY MAD that the author did not even have info online about working on a new book or planning to add more eventually. It was just this cliff hanger and then NOTHING!

message 11: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Wow that for sure would make me mad! Sometimes it's out of the authors hands. Like not enough interest so no publisher will pay for it. But then u think the writer would self publish online if it was a cliff hanger!

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
This was back in 2009 or so, but I feel like even then it author would post something somewhere about why there was not another one... Now that I am thinking about it more I really want to figure out the name of that book so I can find out what ever came of it!!! haha

message 13: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Haha I do that for movies! I won't remember a name and it will bug me so much and I'll remember hrs. later and friends will look at me strangely saying u still thinking about it! Happens to actors names I forget too. I hate getting older haha

message 14: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Have u heard about this app called pandora? I think I'm late to the party as it's been out for awhile but downloaded it the other day and all yesterday morning was listening to Disney songs :) was awesome!

If u don't know (which I didn't) it's an app that is sort of like a radio station where u type in a song or singer u like and it plays similar songs (the free version has adds in it but not many) u have a certain amount if "skips" a day but I find if I don't like a song I will change "stations" and listen to something else :)

message 15: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Yeah, forgetting things sucks! I feel like with the book I am going to randomly be at work in a few weeks and then just BAM remember it!! haha

As for Pandora, I listen to it every day at work! Just movie soundtracks like Narnia and Pirates of the Caribbean and the like! But, I used to use it at home ALL THE TIME before I got way too busy with theater to do much music listening.

FOUND IT!!!!!! Scrolled through some Christian fiction books on amazon and there it was!! Recognized the cover immediately! It's called Vanished, and is by Kathryn Mackel. Unfortunately, there is STILL not another book in the series... All the reviews I read about it say the same thing "good book...but where is the second?" Could have been an interesting series if she stuck with it...instead it is a rather disappointing start to an unfinished series... :(

message 17: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments You don't think something happened to her do u? Maybe something bad to stop her writing? Hope not...

message 18: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Shes' put out a few books since then, so it looks like she just stopped that series. Maybe she quit writing all together, but there is nothing really announcing it anywhere I can find.... Hmmmm

message 19: by J (new)

J A | 86 comments I'm in San Antonio, Texas and our public library has a digital system that allows us to download PDF and mp3 versions of books for free. They have a specific amount of licenses per title so you have to wait in line at times but it's what got me back into reading... Well somewhat. But look into your own public libraries and see if they offer a similar program. Right now I have Cirque de Freaks and The Registry checked out on my iPhone and just finished the great gatsby

I actually spend about an hour yesterday trying to figure out how to get books from the library on my Kindle. I don't want to read them on my KFire though, just my regular Kindle(yes, I have both). I cannot figure it out, but considering the number of books I have unread on my kindle (200...most of which I got for free on Amazon) I'm not too worried about it for now. :)

message 21: by J (new)

J A | 86 comments When I download kindle books they automatically update on any device that's using the same user name and PW, unless they require a USB for some stupid security thing, which happened to me once

message 22: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Interesting!! I wonder then if I get them on my KFire if they will also appear on my Kindle... This is bad and good all at once! I am determined to get through all the books on my Kindle, but then I keep buying books and finding new ways to read them! haha oops....

message 23: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments I was thinking of buying the Kfire but really want the new paper white kindle. I have my old one which has started not working properly so have been reading from my phone. I do miss reading from my kindle. I think it would cost too much to fix :( so getting excited to by a new one haha

message 24: by J (new)

J A | 86 comments I heard there is a spirited discussion going on about choosing a kindle fire over a paper white... or was it the other way around?

message 25: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Other way round :) do u recommend the fire?

message 26: by J (new)

J A | 86 comments I'm joking, I'm in the process of making the same decision. Also considering the nook

I love my KFire, but I would gladly give it up if someone said I had to choose between it and my Kindle. I have the old school one with the Keyboard(before they even put ads on them). I love it SOOO much! If it ever breaks I think I would go with a regular Kidle still, skip the whole paper white. I like that I can read it without glare, and I usually am not reading anywhere dark enough that I need the soft back lighting.

As for the KFire though, it is great for apps and all that! I got it so I can be on my laptop less, and it has been great! I use it mostly for Netflix and then a few games that I used to play on my iPod.

Sam | 606 comments The one I have that's not working is the key board one and it really broke my heart when the screen isn't working from 20cm from top :( done everything... Re-started re-booted still bad :( so resigned myself to buying another. It's the worst first world prob ;)

I actually stepped on mine at one point and was able to get it replaces for free, didn't even pay extra shipping. Granted, it was within the first year of my owning it, so that might not help you much. But, i bet you could sell your "broken" one back and part of the cost of selling it to them could go towards the new one. Worth a shot at least. Give them a call maybe and describe what happened and they might help you out! I called when mine was destroyed (it was under a blanket so I stepped without thinking and BOOM....screen ruined) and they helped me out and I had the new one to me in like three days I think it was....

Has anyone used their Kindle to get free library books? I just found an app on my KFire last night that let me get free book and audio books from my library. I am excited to finish the book I am reading now so I can try some audio books, and also read without spending a whack tun on kindle books! :)

message 32: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Is there a way to link or merge topics if there has been another created? eg. I am Legend? if not I dont mind was just wondering :)

message 33: by J (new)

J A | 86 comments Uh oh, was there already a thread and I created a new one? Just delete mine, I'll search for the old one.

Sam | 606 comments That's ok we can keep both. No rule says u can't! :D

message 35: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
If it is a both to people to have two of the same we could like copy paste over the comments made, or people could just use one other the other. I has a feeling there was already one, but I love the book so much I just started chatting about it figuring it was in the "worst book to movie translation" or something! Thanks for catching that Sam! :)

Sam | 606 comments I'm heart Broken this morning as just found out Bob Hoskin's has died today :( best known for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and other films like Hook (Smee).... So many films. I'm so sad we have lost a bright star as him to pneumonia at age 71. Didn't know he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's 2 years ago. That shocked me... I'm just really down now :( hope day gets better!!!

message 37: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Wow! I did not hear that yet. He is SOOO iconic in both of those movies! And 71 is for sure too young to die! Sad day for sure! Also, sending hugs and well wished from WA that your day is going better now! <3

message 38: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments aww thanks! It's going fine, just tired from this long week! haha as the past 2 weeks Aus has had holiday's, so last week I only worked 3 days and week before that worked 4 days. To go back to 5 day weeks is exhausting :)

All day today I have kept remembering Bob's movies. like David Copperfield and Mrs Henderson Presents... He will be missed!

I for sure understand that one!!! Had that a few weeks ago! And now this week I am dying since time is movie SO SLOW! I leave for vacation in a week, and I just want it to be here already!! Only 4 more work days until I head out, just got to make it through that! :D

message 40: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments oh i'm jealous! I actually dont know when my next leave will be so I guess that also doesn't help me get through the work week as you need something to look forward to!!

Have a great time if I don't talk to you before you head off :D but I'm sure I will!

message 41: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Thanks! And yeah, I will be on here a lot next week, since I have a full day and 1/2 off before I fly out. This will be my first real non-working vacation that is longer than a weekend in a little over a year! It is going to feel amazing!! :D

message 42: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Hey you ever read a book just because the main characters name is your own? :D

message 43: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments I'm reading a trilogy right now with my full name as the main character. It's funny but I'm not in love with the books and I'm nothing like the girl. I'd thought maybe someone else had done what I had :) my last name is pretty common tho so maybe not everyone has a boring sounding name as Samantha Smith. :)

message 44: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Fearless by Devon Hartford which is chic lit... But I would also say young Adult as she just started College. But yeah never just picked up a book because of their name before. Kind of like picking a book by its cover, which I have done before :)

message 45: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Which one is legend?

message 46: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Oh by Marie Lu! I haven't read yet :)

message 47: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments I hadn't heard of it till I read the article Dana uploaded the other day about being too old for YA :)

message 48: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Since my name is Dana, it's really uncommon to see in books! I have maybe seen it once or twice...but never as a lead character.... If I found out there was a book with my name as a lead, I would FOR SURE take a look at it!!!!

Oh, and I own the first in the Legend series, but have just not started it yet. Hopefully soon! :D

message 49: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Not sure if anyone would be interested but I found a list of 50 Essential Young Adult books you must read...

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/books/featu...

Do you agree? some have been made into movies... any from this list that should be made for the big screen?

message 50: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Wow...a lot of them were ones I had never heard of! Some of that could be that they appeared to be older, but it would be interesting to read a book from 30 years ago that is a YA, and compare it to one from today!
