Challenge Suggestion Thread

Coming up with a new challenge every month is kind of hard sometimes. If you have any ideas for challenges that you think would be fun, let us know here. Also, if there are any challenges that we have done in the past the you would like to repeat or do a different version of, we love to know.

Any other suggestions on how we can make the challenges more fun for you would also be appreciated.

How about a "curiosity challenge" where you have to read manga series you haven't read before? For this challenge, you can start a series you haven't read before and read a few volumes from it, or read a bunch of first volumes, so it gives people some options. :)

Location Challenge: reading manga by author/artist's birth place. (ex. Natsume's Book of Friends by Yuki Midorikawa= Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan) or by setting.

Body switch/Gender Bender: can't think of any except Orange Chocolate by Yamada Nanpei. There are a few for cross dressing (Nosatsu Junkie, Host Club, Penguin Revolution)

Clairvoyance: manga with characters that can see the future/past. (ex. Land of the Blindfolded)

Time Travel: traveling to the past/future, communicating with past/future self. (Kamisama Kiss, Haruka, Orange[probably josei, not shojo])

Limited Series: 20 volumes or less. (Heaven's Will, Beast Master, Wild@Heart)

Unlimited: 20+ volumes. (Fruits Basket, the Wallflower, Skip Beat)

speaking of skip beat...
AudioVisual Media: manga with characters in entertainments/visual media like actors, models, singers, etc.

I'd like to do a six-month or year-long challenge for the group starting on January First. Does anyone have suggestions for what they'd like to see as a longer challenge?

Review Challenge - Write reviews on Goodreads for any volumes you read (2 paragraph minimum?).

Read and Watch - Read the first volume of a series (or more) then watch the part that is adapted in anime form. Come back to the boards to talk about each and compare them.

Manga Adaptation Only - Read Mangas that don't have anime adaptations (count volumes that haven't been adapted for shows that have?).

Spinoff / Sequel / Special Volumes - Read a volume not part of the original Manga continuum.

One offs - One off Manga volumes only (no series).

In one group I am in we're doing a series challenge. Where you aim to finish up series. It goes by a point system book 1 is worth 1 point 2 is worth 2 so on and so forth and it caps at 5. I like this challenge and when I saw it I thought it'd be a good idea for the shojo group I'm in. xD It'd give me extra motivation to finish up some of the series I started. Sadly the group I'm in doing that doesn't count manga. :( They made their challenge 2 months but I could see it possible to make it a longer challenge.

@ Tiffany: The point system might be tough to implement with the challenge system the way it is. I like the idea for finishing a series, but I don't think we can do the points.

Could we do the Kyuuketsu & Jyuugetsu challenge again in 2018?

There were other challenges that I'd be interested in doing again:
May-gane Challenge
Flower challenge
Blind Date challenge

There have been spell outs in the past, which I'd be into doing.

Maybe a scavenger type challenge.

I'm not sure how one would do a "scavenger type" challenge. :) I'd be game if you have ideas.

The scavenger challenges I've seen have a list of words you have to find in books you're reading. I guess that would be harder in manga. Maybe a combination of visual and words to be found would be better for this group.
I'm going to have to brainstorm more later. If I don't post more on this idea it is not possible.

Ah, okay. I was thinking of the wrong kind of scavenger hunt. :) I was thinking of the kind where one clue leads you to the next.

I might do a literal scavenger hunt and say to find objects in manga lol. Vending machine, movie theater, cat, glasses, potted plant. Maybe toss in a few anime cliches ("love at first sight", "inner monologue"). This could be fun. :3

I'm glad that you listed some things that are commonly found in manga. I suggested it, but I totally blanked on how to make it work for manga. Maybe we could also search for yokai if we happen to be reading a group read with a fantasy theme.

So in January I read Lovesick Ellie vol. 2 and Aoba-kun's Confessions vol. 1 and found that both books feature characters named Aoba. Maybe we could do a reading challenge where we read manga with something like that in common. Another example would be reading a volume of Blue Exorcist and one of The Bride and the Exorcist Knight. The thing in common here being a word in the title.

I will be back with other ideas as they come to me (and if I remember. I forget because I don't write them down).

That sounds like it could be interesting for a challenge. I like the idea of a challenge that looks for shared words in the title.
