The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
they are small, but there are five birds flying across the cover - one to the right of KIDD, one just below KIDD, three between INVENTION and OF.

Sorry to keep you waiting for the answer, but good news YES that cover works! I read it and the birds were visible on the hardback edition with the same cover.

Melanie (ladybugh) | 286 comments Would Bellman and Black work for option 4 - Birds. The body and wings of a rook are on the cover (you can't see its head). The bird is a main element in the storyline.
