Hi, Chantelle, and welcome! By some coincidence, I tried my hand at a comedic steampunk mystery recently, which is going to appear in an anthology, but I don't have the chops to do that full time. Best of luck with your efforts!

Hi, Anna, and welcome. Lots of interesting things to read around here. Just settle back and have the time of your life.

My name is Wesley Cross. While Cyberpunk (and generally Sci-Fi) is one of my favorite genres, I just like a good story. Better yet, if it has multiple plotlines and is not predictable. Have a soft spot for space operas too (Commonwealth saga anyone?). So bring it to me whether it's The Matrix, Dark City or Game of Thrones. Grew up reading a ton of books from Alexandre Dumas to Michail Bulgakov to Nietzsche. Have been writing for as long as I can remember. My first book came out just about a month ago on Amazon.
Nice to meet you all.

Welcome, Wesley! I'm sure you're going to have a great time here.

Favorite *punk authors include Meljean Brook, Richard K. Morgan, Bec McMaster, and William Gibson. Favorite *punk games include SOMA and most roleplaying games. I generally enjoy books and games punching me in the face. Metaphorically.

Welcome, Lee. Hope you have a wonderful and productive stay.
Welcome, Lee. Hope you have a wonderful and productive stay.

I'm Matt, originally from the UK, but now living in Switzerland.
I think this is the part of my intro where I tell everyone what genre I write in, but here's the problem. My writing doesn't fit neatly into any one genre niche.
My work is set in the future, in our universe, on a distant planet, so it's Sci-fi, but there is no high tech stuff involved (apart from old, forgotten tech, that doesn't look like tech at all).
It involves sword fights (and axe fights) and a host of weird monsters, so it looks a lot like fantasy, but there is no magic involved (apart from that old tech, which has all the appearance of something magic/supernatural)
It also has steam engines (and explosive-bolt firing crossbows and other similar tech level gizmos), so you could say that it's Steampunk, but there are no bustles or goggles or other neo-victorian stuff involved.
I reckon it's some kind of 'Punk', and the nearest I can get to classifying it is 'Fantasy Steampunk'
I typed 'Fantasy Steampunk' into the search box, and came across this group, and it seemed like a decent place to be. Maybe you can all help me to straighten out this whole 'Punk' genre thing.

Hi, Matt, and welcome to the front. There has long-been fantasy steampunk, though it usually describes such Victorian staples as the seance, the haunting, and old-school zombies. Maybe you've started something! Best of luck with it, and have a great time here.

You know? Apart from the Steampunk element, your book sounds a lot like Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. Back in the 1990s, that was considered fantasy despite the SF background.
What is your story about?

I've just had a look at Marion Zimmer Bradley's work. It does look interesting. The covers and opening chapters look very 'Fantasy', but I can see things like 'Terran colonies' and 'ships' being mentioned. I'll have to have a closer look at that.
The story I have published is divided into two main tales.
In one, the MC (A Templar) is hunting down a demon that is capable of possessing people and making them do nasty things.
The other tale is about a thief and a merchant's daughter going in search of an item, demonic in nature, because they believe it is valuable.
In the end, the separate tales link together, and the reader finds out exactly what it is that the thief and the Templar are both looking for.
As I mentioned in the intro, all the demonic/supernatural stuff is actually ancient technology. I don't want to go on about the background to the world, but essentially, the planet's society has had to rebuild itself after certain events in the past, and have reached a medieval/steam tech level.
Oh, I hate writing synopses.
That one was pretty brief for me.

Oh yea, I'm an actual punk rocker too.

Janus Quadrifrons
Janus Quadrifrons is a dark mind game written in order to manipulate your perception of Human Identity, Self Awareness,Freedom of Choice, Reality and Time.
Janus has the ability to connect with other people's conciousness. Alex enhances that ability at a secret, dystopian laboratory using genetic engeneering, quantum mechanics and advanced technology in order to bend Reality and Time. Mark is a doctor who maintains the balance between Janus and Alex.
Each one of them is on a quest for his own personnal "Happy Ending" while both "Happy" and "Ending" are deceitful.
It's free on Kindle Unlimited but if you would like to listen to the audiobook's version is for free on youtube.

That's an impressive list, Glen, demonstrates a lot of taste. I favor the old stuff myself, though more in the line of the "boys' own" adventures of the '1930s through the 1950s. Anyway, welcome to the party. I hope you find some great reads here!

When I saw this group, I immediately urged to join, because I often struggle to positively define the kind of science fiction I love to read and try (don’t ask) to write. It’s definitely not space opera or assorted apocalypses, I’m not into ‘boom, bang, flash, and there goes another spaceship.’ Some of my favorite books are categorized as speculative fiction or Cyberpunk, I can relate to some aspects of hard SciFi, Afrofuturism and Solarpunk, but the genre characteristics alone won’t keep me engaged. If the plot or cast fall flat, I won’t stay with it.
This making any sense, to anyone? Then please, please, please help me discover new authors and books. Recommendations always welcome!

Hi, Troim. I'm not one of those disingenuous types who chime in with "Read my stuff!" - It may not scratch the itch you describe. But look into the work of David Lee Summers: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
David is a working astronomer with a firm grasp of science who writes in several genres. Examine his portfolio and I'll bet you find something to like. You may want to start with Owl Dance.
Best of luck finding that magic story!

I would love to help you find books. Are there any aspects of story you're really interested in (sociology, cybernetics, economics, politics)? Anything you find makes you yawn?
I guess I'll start with this: Have you read Richard K. Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs trilogy? That's one of the classics.

I just stumbled onto the Punk Fiction group in an effort to find people who like decopunk or dieselpunk, which are two punk niches I enjoy to read. Don't get me wrong, I love me a good Steampunk and Cyberpunk, but my main focus right now are diesel and deco. Anyone on here share that affinity?
Anyway, glad to be here and interact!

Hey John. Nice! What are you currently working on right now? I actually do have some of my work online. I just self published my first dieselpunk/deco on Amazon, The Caldera's Vice. I also have it to read for free if you have a Wattpad account :)

I’ll be relaunching a Dieselpunk next year. I’ll be in touch!
Robert wrote: "Hi everyone, I'm into steampunk, so send me some book suggestions!"
Welcome, Robert! Probably the broadest of the punk fields. I'd recommend you go to amazon.com and look into the works of C.W. Hawes, Karen Carlisle, William J. Jackson, Stephanie Kato, and just maybe a fellow named Jack Tyler. Read the descriptions carefully, as I'm pretty sure all of them, except Ms. Kato, write in several genres. I've enjoyed all of their work, but that Tyler guy... best judge for yourself on that one!

Hello, Raine, and welcome to publication. It's a great feeling, isn't it? I'm going to turn you on to a couple of places where I hang out, the conversation is good, and the trolls are nonexistent because they aren't tolerated as members.
First, the main place I can be found is on my portfolio page at https://www.writing.com/main/portfoli... - The site is huge. You can check out my blog, and explore the site through links. Lots of punk there, in fact, I'll be teaching a basic steampunk course in the WdC Writers University this spring. If you join, which is free, you'll be able to read all three of my novels for free there; non-members have to buy them.
Second, a cozier, more intimate venue: Visit http://welcometosteampunk.com/ - Their public page will show you what they're into over there. Request a membership if it interests you; it's also free. Once you're in, ask to join a group called Scribblers' Den -- two dozen of the nicest, not to mention most talented, steampunk authors I've personally encountered. It's been a little dormant lately, but some fresh blood might shake them out of their lairs.
Whatever you decide about that, I wish you the best of luck with your new adventure, and hope that your writing takes you on the journey of a lifetime!
