Suze | 764 comments Just found out there is a new software update for the Kindle PaperWhite2nd Generation. It looks pretty good too, and with this update we can manage cloud collection.
Here's the link to the thread on Amazons forum, which is where I found out about the update.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Thanks Suze - I've just switched my aeroplane mode off, so it can update.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) I did use the audio on my "Keyboard" ONCE - there is a long way to go with the audio feature anyway - so no real loss. It will, in time, be good I'm sure - but not yet!!

Suze | 764 comments I've turned the aeroplane mode off as well, but must remember to keep my eye on the battery level.

I moaned about the lack of audio, even though I hadn't used it, and I only got a PW because my Touch stopped working, and I was given a PW with the extended warranty.
I did try the voice once on the keyboard, and it was a joke, as well as being hard work to listen to. People have said you get used to the robotic voice, but I don't think I could. It isn't even that well done, eg. don't was pronounced as don t.
By all accounts an audio book will play how it should on the kindles with audio, but I prefer to use my phone for those, as it fits in my back pocket, which the kindle won't do.

Audio, I might add, that I have never used on my Touch."

The built in light is very useful, and the kindle itself is a bit lighter.

Suze | 764 comments Reading the thread on Amazon tonight, you can have your cloud collections just in the cloud, rather than showing on the kindle itself, if that's what you prefer. I haven't as yet made any cloud collections, because I know I won't keep them up, and only have 2 collections on the kindle itself.

There is a software update available for the first gen Paper Whites also.

I have 2 collections on the kindle. One for samples and one for the next in a series., both of which are self explanatory. I used to have a few collections but dumped them all when I got bored of keeping them organised. I do only keep a few books on the kindle itself, so collections aren't that necessary.

Suze | 764 comments You could keep the touch as a spare if you get the PW, or have you already got a spare.

message 10: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments It is very good, and very light to use. I tend to use mine naked as I don't want the extra weight of a case. The built in light is excellent, especially as you can alter the brightness to suit your own needs.
If you keep the Touch as a spare, then you can use that one if you need audio capabilities for anything.
You could always try one, and send it back within 30 days if you don't like it, which would then create a refurb, for somebody who needs one a little less expensive.

.......don't you get a bit cold??

message 12: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments Only in the depths of winter, if I'm outside :-))

One good thing I have found about the light weight of the PW, it doesn't hurt as much when you go to sleep while reading and it falls forward on your nose.

Empress (the_empress) I have a question too, is it possible to set the Kindle not to download books automatically. I prefer if they stay in the cloud and I download them when I need them.

I don't see the option on the kindle but it might be on the Amazon website?

I personally would take out the extended warranty. Why not just buy a wifi, rather than a 3G, it will save you £60.

When you buy a book, rather than select 'deliver to my kindle' select 'transfer via computer'. This will download a copy to your pc, but that's easily deleted if you don't want it as a back up.

message 16: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 5 comments I am anal about my collections, even if they are just read and to read.
If you were to have your pc as your main kindle, then you could just download the ones you want to the kindle.
I like the audio on my KK. I use that one for when I'm on my treadmill. I set it to read, turn the volume down to zero and it turns the page for me, so I don't have to reach to turn pages.

message 17: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments I tried that with the audio on the KK, but it didn't read quickly enough for me, and I always ended up waiting for the page turn. It was useful at times though.

I have arthritis in my hands and wrists, so don't want the extra weight when I'm reading. I do have a case to use if I take it out of the house, but it's just a lightweight one to protect the screen from scratches.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) I never buy extended warranties Frenchie - they are usually much too expensive....... but it's easy for me to say this as (crossing fingers as I type) my electronics rarely go wrong. I always think you are better off putting the same amount of money into a separate fund for all things - then if it does go wrong you have the money saved up anyway - and if things don't go wrong - then you have a nice little nest egg to put towards something else that might go wrong........ or you could always buy some DOUGHNUTS with it!!!

Suze | 764 comments Frenchie, I'd forgotten about the hospital. Yes, I can see now why you prefer to have 3G. You might actually have trouble getting a 3G one, as there only ever seems to be wifi for sale these days, so not sure if they even do a 3G model any more. What you could do is just get a wifi model and make sure you keep your Touch for when needed at the hospital.

I prefer the extended warranties on kindle as I do think they are fickle. I've also found if I buy from Currys, and don't take it out at the time of sale I get a better deal a few weeks later. Without my extended I wouldn't have a kindle at the moment as my Touch packed in and a few weeks ago my PW first gen. developed a nasty white stripe down the centre of the screen.

You're welcome :-))

Suze | 764 comments I've still not had my update, so have turned the wifi off, as it could be weeks before it comes through. I might download and install the update manually, later today.

Suze | 764 comments They have the PW first gen 3G in stock at the moment, but personally I would hold out for the latest one.

Suze | 764 comments It's worse when you run out of both coffee and books. If the chocolate thief has been visiting as well, there is hell to pay.

Suze | 764 comments I wonder why your Touch isn't recognising the Virgin network.

Did you try restart? That used to fix all kinds of problems for PCs. There must be a troubleshoot as well, but it might be on the Amazon website.

This took some finding. The delivery time is ridiculously long - 5-7 weeks. Makes me wonder if they're making to order.

Empress (the_empress) I buy refurbished products. My touch is refurbished and never had problems with it. It was brand new as well. Not always refurbished means previously owned.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Certified-Ref... [Not 3g]

How can a 3g not have a monthly contract? How do you connect-to/pay-for the internet?

message 31: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments I don't mind refurbed, as long as there is a decent reduction in price.
Amazon stand the cost of the 3G, and this is why it is now restricted to Amazon and Wiki, as people were abusing it, and using their kindles for free internet. I only tried once to use it on the 'net, and it was a right pain in the bum, so didn't bother again.
I do like the 3G option for book downloads though, as it really does mean you can download anywhere you like, rather than having to find a wifi connection if you are away from home.

I see well 3G sounds like a good option.

yes, Mine was about 30 pounds cheaper and for a product that is barely above 100 it makes more of a difference. I think I got it for just above £80. Ad I like bought it for the touchscreen.

message 33: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments 3G is a good option if you travel a lot, or have spells in hospital like Frenchie, otherwise it's not really worth the extra £60, and you can buy a lot of books for £60.
My sister bought a refurbed Touch, and was also offered the extended warranty, so in that effect it was no different than a new one. She's had it over 12 months now, and hasn't had any problems with it.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) I would say no - that is a third of the price of a new one and this is ridiculous for 2 years protection (I know you say 3, but you've already got a year from the original guarantee, so that cuts it down to 2 years). By the time (if) your Paperwhite breaks down - there will probably be newer versions, with ?better features. You might be unlucky, but I don't think there are many with problems that can't be easily sorted without having to pay out that much!

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Yes - same lead! I can also use the same lead for my Samsung Galaxy phone as they are in the process of standardising chargers. As time goes by, more and more things will all be able to use the same charger.

message 36: by Suze (new)

Suze | 764 comments I use the same charger for as much as possible, mainly because I get fed up of hunting round for the correct charging cable.
