While the movie is almost a different story, the story would not have been brought to film had Beagle not written the book first. I will always cherish both.

I also love North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and the 4 hour movie of that is really well done.

Book: ->The Prestige
Movie:->The Prestige (movie info at IMDB.com)
and
Book:->The Long Goodbye
Movie:->The Long Goodbye(1973) (movie info at IMDB.com)
These are two where the movie, if substantially different, is as good at least as the book if not better. They are two of my favorite primarily direct book to screen adaptations.
As I said in my review of the book "The Prestige", the movie and the book are complimentary of one another and the consumption of one should be paired with the other.
"The Long Goodbye" is just one of those films that gets under your skin even as a basic straightforward 'who-dunit' detective mystery. It becomes even more captivating for film buffs when they find out the technical details of its production.
Two companion books and movies that I will recommend to anyone!

Another favorite is Chocolat -- a sensually rich movie with fine performances.

I loved 'Chocolat' also!

An excellent long read that lures you into the story, and the movie is a classic.

Revolutionary Road- Yes! This is a great film and very faithful and worthy adaptation.
Two more classics that are contenders for this listing and discussion:
Book: ->From Here to Eternity
Movie:->From Here to Eternity(movie info at IMDB.com)
and
Book: ->On the Beach
Movie:->On the Beach(1959) (movie info at IMDB.com)
A World War II classic with one of the few film appearances by Frank Sinatra and a Cold War dystopian masterpiece. The film of From Here to Eternity in my opinion is slightly better than the book and the film of On the Beach is just edged out by the book. Or maybe the other way round. . .
All highly recommended (books and movies) and worth viewing and reading, again.

Steve McQueen. What else do you need to say about the movie? How about Richard Attenborough and Mako too! Great movie.

Amen to that, plus Candice Bergen and with Wise's direction.

I have always loved that movie. I saw it at the theater when it came out. Huge Steve McQueen fan back in the da..."
Ya same here as well, read the book as a very young lad, just literally was taken in by the story, then a few years down the road bout jumped for joy when I found out they made a movie of it, since it's release in VHS then DVD, it's one of a handful of movies i watch about every few years.

My favorite Gregory Peck movie, got to get the book and read it soon.

The book is well worth the read in and of itself, but the film just sells itself better.

The Great Escape
The movie another classic that does the book pretty decent justice.
The Great Escape (1963)
Director John Sturges, writers Paul Brickhill and James Clavell, an all star cast, headlined by Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and a lot more.

Evelyn Steward"
Good day, night here.
Give it a shot, it's a pretty quick read.
Or are you talking about Garp??

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
Cold Mountain
The Remains of the day
Zorba the Greek
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Last Picture Show
Johnny Got His Gun
All books I loved that were turned into quality films.

Try this one believe this is the one for you.

Loved the movie, have yet to read the book.
Have to add "High Sierra".
Bogart at his finest and the ever lovely Ida Lupino. But it's another one I haven't read the book to.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a favorite, book and film.

The B&W version of The Mist was very very good. Your right about the movie The Stand, would like to see HBO pick it up and giveva a run of a couple of seasons..
