Matt Moran What's your favorite movie that was originally a book?

Christine Ah yes, The Godfather was great! I also like The Outsiders (also directed by FF Coppola)

Gerd Desert Hearts, based on Desert of the Heart, hands down.
Great movie!

Olivia Naturally lord of the rings. HTe book goes on for a bit but those films are INCREDIBLE. I am also expecting to love falt in our stars but thats not out yet..

Adriana Forrest Gump. The book doesn't even compare.

Mark Milan Kundera's The Unbearable lightness of being both the book and the movie are splendid.

Matthew Thyer I am not a fan of the book-to-movie conversion. In fact, most of them just leave me underwhelmed and may even provoke a negative response to what I had otherwise thought was an okay book.

More here.

Ruth To Kill A Mockingbird, Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone. That's all I can think of right now. Too tired to think.

Emily Appel The Last Unicorn. The book and movie were VERY different from one another and I enjoy each for what they are.

While the movie is almost a different story, the story would not have been brought to film had Beagle not written the book first. I will always cherish both.

Staci Roberts Okay, someone is bound to say it, so it will be me. Pride and Prejudice - the 6 hour BBC version. It would have to be six hours to get everything in there.

I also love North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and the 4 hour movie of that is really well done.

Alain Amiet The Big Sleep. I don't know which one hypnotizes me. Both. Probably.

Colleen Browne Angela's Ashes

CD Two immediately come to mind:

Book: ->The Prestige
Movie:->The Prestige (movie info at IMDB.com)

and

Book:->The Long Goodbye
Movie:->The Long Goodbye(1973) (movie info at IMDB.com)

These are two where the movie, if substantially different, is as good at least as the book if not better. They are two of my favorite primarily direct book to screen adaptations.

As I said in my review of the book "The Prestige", the movie and the book are complimentary of one another and the consumption of one should be paired with the other.

"The Long Goodbye" is just one of those films that gets under your skin even as a basic straightforward 'who-dunit' detective mystery. It becomes even more captivating for film buffs when they find out the technical details of its production.

Two companion books and movies that I will recommend to anyone!

Louis Arata The Lord of the Rings is impressive.

Another favorite is Chocolat -- a sensually rich movie with fine performances.

I loved 'Chocolat' also!

Vanessa Eden Patton Lotr, gone with the wind and Revolutionary Road.

Doubledf99.99 One of my all time favorites is The Sand Pebbles.
An excellent long read that lures you into the story, and the movie is a classic.

Revolutionary Road- Yes! This is a great film and very faithful and worthy adaptation.

Two more classics that are contenders for this listing and discussion:

Book: ->From Here to Eternity
Movie:->From Here to Eternity(movie info at IMDB.com)

and

Book: ->On the Beach
Movie:->On the Beach(1959) (movie info at IMDB.com)

A World War II classic with one of the few film appearances by Frank Sinatra and a Cold War dystopian masterpiece. The film of From Here to Eternity in my opinion is slightly better than the book and the film of On the Beach is just edged out by the book. Or maybe the other way round. . .

All highly recommended (books and movies) and worth viewing and reading, again.

Steve McQueen. What else do you need to say about the movie? How about Richard Attenborough and Mako too! Great movie.

S.W. Gordon The World According to Garp, John Irving

Doubledf99.99 The book, The Great Escape, very good tense read, makes you sweat right along with the tunnel guys.
The Great Escape

The movie another classic that does the book pretty decent justice.
The Great Escape (1963)
Director John Sturges, writers Paul Brickhill and James Clavell, an all star cast, headlined by Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and a lot more.

Evelyn Have seen the film loads if times but gave never read the book. Pehaps i should.

message 32: by Nichole (new)

Nichole The Wedding Date. It's based off a book; can't remember the name, but the movie is way better and one of my fave romantic comedies.

Evelyn Must do that, Evelyn

Nichola St. Anthony The Lord Of The Rings, hands down.

Evelyn What did you think of the books?

message 36: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Adcock Several come to mind:

LOTR
Mystic River
The Manchurian Candidate
The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
Cold Mountain
The Remains of the day
Zorba the Greek
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Last Picture Show
Johnny Got His Gun

All books I loved that were turned into quality films.

Evelyn I have not read many of those, in book form. To kill a mockingbird is aout the only one. But, i was referring to the LOTR books, plus the first one (name escapes me). I read them after i ha seen all the films (barring the very recent ones) . I read them as one complete novel, all three boks in one. I found that at the end of the volume, there were 'updates', for wn of a better word, on what happened AFTER, to Frodo a d Samwise Gamgee and their offspring. It also went ino deoths, somewhat, regarding the dwarves and separately, the Elvish Zkingdom. Learnt a whole lot more about the characters and their heritages.

Evelyn Ps. Wish i knew the IBSN number so i could ge it on Kindle. Evelyn

Louis Arata It's been a while since I've read and seen What Dreams May Come, but I remember being impressed by the visual quality of the movie and the inventiveness of the book.

Loved the movie, have yet to read the book.

Have to add "High Sierra".
Bogart at his finest and the ever lovely Ida Lupino. But it's another one I haven't read the book to.

message 47: by Kaelin (new)

Kaelin Murphy My favorite book of all time is "The Stand" and favorite short story is "The Mist", both, of course, by Stephen the King. I was somewhat disappointed with the movie of "The Stand." Naturally, a book that goes into such depth of its characters, plots and sub-plots, cannot effectively be portrayed justly within the time constraints of a movie. I was also taken aback by some of the actors that were chosen for the parts. Some were not how I imagined the characters to look and act. This is just one of the casualties of transferring print to screen. As for "The Mist", this one was a little closer to the story, I thought. It captured the "feel" of the situation quite well, though the ending of the movie surely blew everyone away. Writers try to give the readers a glimpse of what a person looks like and acts like, but it's ultimately the reader's imagination that truly completes the image. Most people see things differently, therefore usually screen images pale in comparison to the mind's imprint of the written word. That being said, I love movies and I love books. Though we try to merge the two, each has to be accepted or rejected on its own platform.

Renee E LotR is a great adaptation of the books.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a favorite, book and film.
