I read this book over a year ago, it was about a couple the man was a journalist, on the way to an awards ceremony they are stopped and he gets out of the car, he is shot and she presumed dead. Actually he goes into protective custody. Most of the book, it talks about her loss, and how she doesn't handle it well. Until she meets someone, who happens to be a rock star. At the end of the book, she and the rock star have decided to fly to Vegas and get married, as she is walking out the door, her phone rings, the book ends here, but the phone call is to tell her that the fiance is alive and well. I dont remember the name of this book or the author and I wanted to read the next book.

I dont remember the cover at all, it is a romance. I do remember the beginning of the book, they are getting ready to go to the awards banquet, they make love and he gives her a bracelet that can only be taken off with a key. Once he is killed, it talks mainly how she tries to get through the days without him. Never changing anything in the bedroom, his clothes months later still where he left them. One of his best friends is FBI i think, he checks on her constantly and he is the one that set up faking his murder. Its all over an article he had written. It even mentions in the book how they even used his same blood type to make sure it looked as real as possible. They are stopped on the road, she is screaming for him not to get out of the car he does and a gun goes off, starting her nightmare.

The reader this entire time believes he is dead, until the end of the book, when it is revealed that he is coming back to testify. Like I said, in between her friends get her to try to start living again and she meet a guy who is a rock star, they start dating, he brings her back to herself. The one they believe is dead is brought back to town, and he is waiting at the police station for his family to show and as his mother is calling his fiance she is walking out the door to the airport and thats when the book stops.

Trish, what's the general tone of the book - romance, erotica, chick lit, mystery, suspense, etc.?

What does the heroine do for a living? The location?

I would say its a romance with a little mystery thrown in. If I remember right the setting for the book was in California as to what the heroine did for a living I really don't remember.

Sure it's not Connected? One reviewer on Amazon says this scene happens later in the book:

"We flash forward a few years later. Ben and Dahlia are living together and engaged. She's a photographer and he's a hard-hitting journalist who is about to win a prestigious award for a story that he's been working of for a few years. En route to the banquet, the car holding Ben and Dahlia is carjacked and Ben is killed. Leaving Dahlia broken and brokenhearted.

Two years go by before she's able to go back to work and even function. When her best friend Aerie, offers her a job in Vegas to interview a rock star and grab some photos. Her surprise is complete when she's told its River Wilde that she'll be meeting in Vegas. See this is the same person she met oh so long ago and never acted on it."

Another reviewer adds: "River loves her so much and does everything to make her happy. They become engaged and head to las Vegas to get married. Then we find out Ben is alive and his death was faked to send him into protection and to protect Dahlia from a story he's uncovered during reporting. Now Ben's coming back."

It sounds about right, and if it is that book, I feel like an idiot...its been right in front of me. :)
