One Flew Don't worry, none of it made any sense.

Kristen What specifically are you confused about?
I haven't read it in a while, so I couldn't just give a complete recap in order, but I could answer questions. Is it about Prim?

how did she die ?

Amanda **SPOILERS**

Ok, let's start when the group leaves Tigris's place. Katniss and Gale get caught by several pods, one of which opens up the ground beneath a certain section of the street. Gale runs to a shop door, and Katniss dashes to the edge of the street. Gale gets caught by peacekeepers in the shop, and yells for Katniss to shoot him. She doesn't hear him, and fails to keep their previous pledge. Hence, the beginning of the end of their friendship.

After leaving Gale in the hands of peacekeepers, Katniss makes her way to Snow's mansion, which is blocked by an area containing Capitol children. Bombs are released by a hovercraft with the Capitol seal, (though I personally believed it was hijacked by President Coin). Prim comes to the rescue with some other medics when the bombs explode again. This kills Prim, the only person Katniss was sure she loved. Because these were double exploding bombs, Katniss believes these were the same ones engineered by Gale and Beetee.

Eventually, the Capitol falls under district control, with Coin as their leader. The survivors of the Hunger Games gather for a convention to decide if they should host a final Hunger Games with Capitol children, just to put some old grudges to rest. Coin is in full support of these games. This will become a key clue for Katniss into Coin's full intentions.

During her stay at the capitol, Katniss runs into the imprisoned President Snow. He gives her incite as to who had the true motive for killing Capitol children. Clearly, it wasn't him, as he had no motive to destroy his human "shield." Doing so would only allow the rebels to enter his mansion. Also, Coin may have wanted Prim dead so she can show Katniss who is really in charge of the rebellion. Katniss can't decide who to believe.

Later, she is given the 'honor' of executing Snow. It is then she realizes that this sick, dying man can no longer rule in tyranny, but Coin can for a life time. She realizes Coin killed Prim to mess with her head, and that the Hunger Games will probably continue for the rest of her life time. In a split second decision, she shoots Coin. Snow dies as the crowd mobs Katniss. As she is being taken away, she screams for Gale to shoot her. He refuses.

For a while Katniss completely loses her sanity. She is put in solitary confinement while her trial as conducted. She is sentenced to spend the rest of her life in District 12. Her mother never returns, nor does Gale. But Peeta comes back to her. Together, they try and piece back their lives.

This entire thread is probably going to contain spoilers.

It's like Amanda explained. The bombs from the first round of parachutes exploded on the kids that Snow was using as his human shield in front of his mansion, and then a group of medics (including Prim) came out to help them. More parachutes were released and then exploded, killing Prim.

I remember being really unclear on whether she was actually dead, for the next couple of chapters, since the book is from Katniss' POV and she goes catatonic after it happens.

Kristine Amanda's account isn't entirely accurate.

Katniss failing to shoot Gale when he's caught by peacekeepers is not the start of the end of their friendship. There's nothing in the book that supports this.

Katniss has no belief that the bomb is the one invented by Gale and Beetee at the time of the explosion. At that point she thinks it was a Capitol bomb.

It's stated indirectly that Prim is dead when Katniss "is forced to accept who I am. A badly burned girl with no wings. With no fire. And no sister." This is while she's being treated for her burns.

The victors meeting comes after Katniss talks with Snow. Snow argues that he had no motive for killing Capitol children and that if he had a working hovercraft he would have used it to escape. This causes Katniss to question who was responsible for the bomb.

Following the meeting with Snow, Katniss is dressed in her Mockingjay costume to execute Snow. Gale visits her to give her the arrow that she will use. Katniss asks why he didn't visit her in hospital and if it was his bomb that killed Prim. Gale says he doesn't know and that she'd always be thinking about it. Katniss doesn't reply but acknowledges that he is right. This marks the end of their friendship. Or, at least, the friendship that they had.

Before it's time to execute Snow, she's called to a meeting of the victors and Coin.

Coin gives them a choice - to have another Games in lieu of killing the entire Capitol population. Note that they're not given a third option of doing neither. However, the victors seem to focus on the rightness or the wrongness of the Games, rather than the full implication that a 'no' vote will, by default, support annihilating the entire Capitol population.

Katniss thinks to herself, "nothing has changed, nothing will ever change now". She weighs her options and then votes 'yes, for Prim'. Presumably, she's seen that the only way to break the cycle is to eliminate Coin. But she needs Coin to trust her first. So she goes along with Coin's suggestion to have another Games. Haymitch doesn't actually vote yes, but says he's with the Mockingjay. This is interpreted as a yes vote. For Katniss, it's evidence that Haymitch understands her and that she has his support. Additionally, the fact that he says 'Mockingjay' rather than 'Katniss' indicates that he understands that she's acting in the interests of the rebellion and what they fought for.

It's not clear whether Katniss decides then and there to kill Coin at Snow's execution or whether she makes that decision at the last moment as Coin is conveniently seated in a balcony directly above Snow.

She points the arrow at Snow, replays in her mind that she and Snow had agreed not to lie to each other, and then alters her aim to kill Coin instead.

Peeta prevents her from killing herself with a nightlock pill. She's in solitary confinement in a severely depressed state while her trial takes place. (Note. Katniss might not actually be in solitary confinement, she may just not register that people are there much like her mother did after her husband was killed)

She is not sentenced to spend the rest of life in District 12. Just until further notice. She returns to District 12 with Haymitch. Haymitch promptly gets drunk and stays drunk. Greasy Sae looks after Katniss. Katniss barely functions - she doesn't wash, or move very far from her chair. When Peeta returns, she rouses herself, washes and goes hunting. The return of Buttercup on the same day is the catalyst for Katniss to express her grief at Prim's death. Katniss and Peeta grow close again. They eventually have two children.

It's not said if Gale or Katniss's mother return to District 12 or not.

Austin I thoroughly hated this book. I stopped reading halfway through because it was so bad. I had no idea what was going on and I was expecting so much more from the famous hunger games series.

It's completely fine for you to have a negative opinion about MJ, but I'm really curious here, what in the world were you expecting? This seemed like the natural progression after the first two books to me.

No, you're a bit incorrect. In the last chapter (not the epilogue) it is mentioned that the mother never comes back, and that Gale gets a job at District 4 and eventually becomes well-known.

No, it doesn't say that at all. Never is a long time. All we know is that Katniss's mother doesn't accompany Katniss back to District 12. It's not known if her mother returns sometime in the future. Same with Gale. A job in District 2 (not 4) doesn't mean he can't return, even for a visit, to District 12 at a later date.

We simply don't know that Katniss's mother or Gale never returns to District 12. It's not mentioned either way.

I think it's pretty obvious. I mean, it states that the memory of Prim is too painful for the mom to bear so she doesn't come back. 'Course, Gale can visit, but its said, that for a permanent time in the future, he will not be moving back to 12. And yeah, I miswrote 4 instead of 2.

Candy Sparks The best part is that Gale made the bombs that killed Prim. I don't think Katniss could ever forgive Gale for making such a terrible bomb that killed her sister.

Not obvious at all. It's too painful for the mother at the time when Katniss has to return. The book says nothing about her mother never returning. The same about Gale.

Where does it say that Gale stays away for a 'permanent time'? Why couldn't his family return to District 12 and Gale visits them occasionally? There's nothing in the book that says something like this doesn't happen.

All we know is that Katniss's mother doesn't accompany Katniss back to District 12 and still hasn't made an appearance by the time Peeta does because she and Katniss talk on the phone. But it doesn't mean she can't return sometime in the future. Maybe for the wedding? Or to see her grandchildren? The book simply doesn't say.

And all we know that at the time of Katniss asking that Gale has a fancy job in District 2 and is on TV occasionally. That doesn't negate a visit or move to District 12 in the future.

Amanda This is what I love about books. There are some questions that will never be answered, unless the author explicitly gives the information. So naturally, some of the things I wrote are subjective.

It was an accident, and Katniss knows it. At least, I hope she does!
I mean, did Gale ever intend on that bomb to blow off Prim? Of course not! Right?

Luzma The bombs were made specifically to blow up twice: one smaller blast first, and a second bigger one to kill everyone who tried to help the wounded. So yes, they were made to kill medics and just anyone who would volunteer to help. Prim was learning to be a medic, the bomb was made for her and all the others.

Even if Gale didn't intend to kill Prim, he made a bomb that would kill people like her. All is NOT fair in war, that's why there are such things as war crimes, and this is one.

Of course Gale and Betee didn't intend their bombs to be used on children and their own medics, that was Coin. But that bomb that played on human emotions (empathy) is just too much!

Even if Prim hadn't died, Katniss saw Gale was stepping over the line when she saw those bombs. Prim is only an example of the death and destruction; all the other children and medics also have brothers, sisters, parents, kids.

Just making this bomb was terrible enough even if Prim hadn't died.

I think if you're confused, you're reading it right. Anyone who says they know what happened probably didn't read it well enough.

*spoilers

Yea, the ending was pretty rushed.

No one comes to visit each other in the end. Like, after she gets confined for killing Snow, after she moves home? It's weird. You would think people would try to gather support around each other. I didn't even realize they were going to trial her for killing Snow.

Maybe it's kind of told through Katniss' view, that she's so mentally unstable she doesn't realize what was going on? The ending was pretty confusing though.

I have to say, I cried a bunch through the last few pages though. I did really feel for her, you can see how mentally taxed she felt. I was thinking, maybe Gale didn't come visit her in the end because he has his own trauma and is messed up in his own ways (what happened to his own family?). Just like how Haymitch didn't hang out with her after they got back.

There is a lot of egocentric thinking, i.e. not seeing her mom, not reflecting for Finnick that I thought was strange but probably because she was so drugged up, depressed, and a bit psychoic.

I have to say that I REALLY did not like that Katniss said yes to another hunger games for the capital. Maybe she was completely insane at that point (cause I did see a progression of insanity). She wasn't a strong character. In fact you realize she's completely weak and doesn't have very much "fire".Her ideal future when she is first cast in the Hunger Games would have been to go back to the districts and live a quiet life hoping to one day run away with Gale.

She was a girl that wanted to protect her sister and it turned into this whole other thing that she didn't want. Kind of how war takes using people at no expense. Yes the capital was evil but you see how encompassing war is on both sides. Like not knowing if those were Capital or District kids that got bombed, or if the Capital or the Rebels did the bombings.

I think you just watch her go completely mad in this book.

Luzma I think you could read the book again, because it is a bit confusing but I think it really missed the mark for you.

Katniss didn't kill Snow.

After the battle in the capitol, and seeing Snow in the mansion, Katniss realises COIN was the one who dropped the bombs that killed so many innocent people including Prim. She that Coin is just another versión of Snow.

When she says "Yes for Prim" about another hunger games, she only wants Coin to trust her, and when opportunity rises at the execution, she takes it and killes Coin. She thinks it's her only chance to avenge her sister and to rid Panem of another terrible president.

The three books are told by Katniss, that's why we don't know what is happening when she is being held, she doesn't know! And nobody can "visit" her there, she is in jail!

When she goes to 12, her mother doesn't go because she is depressed (and a terrible mother) and Gale doesn't go either because Katniss blames him a bit too for making the bombs (and because he is a prick! He can't have Katniss so he just abandoned her!!)

In the end, only Peeta looks out for her and they fall in love all over again.

Read it again and tel me if I'm a bit delussional!
Anyway that's my interpretation bye!
