Corey Ensrude | 2 comments I'm looking for some 5th/6th grade books with unexpected endings (happy or sad). My class seems to think most books are very predictable and always have happy endings. Looking for something that will catch them off guard.

Sarah | 21 comments I might have to chip in, and say I'd love to hear about some titles as well.

M.G. King (mgking) | 727 comments Great topic! You're right -- most books you can see the end coming from a mile away. It's always fun to be caught off guard! I'll be giving this one some thought, but these are the first few that come to mind. Will be checking back to see what everyone else suggests!

The Thief The Thief (The Queen's Thief, #1) by Megan Whalen Turner

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin The Westing Game

When You Reach Me When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool Moon Over Manifest

Corey Ensrude | 2 comments Thanks M.G.! I have The Westing Game and When You Reach Me on my list of read-alouds already, but will definitely look into The Thief and Moon Over Manifest. We just finished Bridge to Terabithia. I had not it read in my class for a few years because of the so many kids had already seen the movie. Thanks again!

J.C. Whyte (jcwhyte) | 2 comments Hi, Corey! Since you're a 5th grade teacher, I'd be happy to send you a free download of my middle grade ebook, Karmack. It's not predictable at all, and has a great anti-bullying message. Just go to my Goodreads page to see my offer for free downloads to elementary school teachers. (The book will soon be out in paperback as well.)
