The Year of Adventure--what are your adventures???

Thanks so much everyone!!! I had so much fun doing it.....it was great to share my whole sordid life in such a public forum!! Made me feel good about my ordeal and now Mel Robbins (I was on Make it Happen with Mel Robbins) is going to have me back on Friday to talk more with her!!!! This is like a dream come true for me....I've been asking for help with my life this year...wanting to find my soul's purpose....and at last help is here! This is the link to hear my short broadcast yesterday~~~
http://archives.warpradio.com/ltrn/Ma...
Fast forward just a bit if you want....I didn't come on at the top of the hour. To listen live Friday its 1-3pm eastern time and you go to www.bordersmedia.com and click on her show. There will be a link to listen live and you click on that. Thanks for everyone's support....I really appreciate it!!

Wow Holli you're going to end up with your own show soon! This has been such a great thread to see the goals and then the directions that the year and the moment goes in. Someone needs to write a book about this!

Well I am starting to get my act together to go back to school. I cant really go back until after October (thats when I get residency here) so it wont be until January but I am getting all my paper work together. It is kind of exciting for me. It is the first time in a long time I really feel ready and have a desire to do it. It will be a long road and I'm okay with that, I'm just happy to finally be on it again.

Wow, Tera... I am so very impressed. Oh and jealous, too! School rocks--you get to learn sooooooo much! Swim in it, honey! :)

NICE......what kid wouldn't like having ubercool Tera as their teacher!!! You are going to kick ass :)

Holli, I have to agree w/Teri! You make more sense than Mel has ~ she's got some good idea's but seemed to fixate on 1 thing that was a past goal/interest instead of trying to assist you in connecting with what you want to do NOW! (The guy on the show w/Mel was right ~ we initially begin dreaming & planning our lives as healthy (aka normal!) people and once something derails that, we don't see that we have to approach EVERYTHING differently! we just continue to think the way we did originally and when circumstances don't work out, we begin to think there's no use!)Just my 2 cents! :)
Aww.....Teri and Jo.....you are both so cool!! I wish i could host a radio show....or write an advice column....I would love to do those things. I just have no idea how to get started. i really don't and when something is hard i procrastinate. :( I need help!!! Anyone know how to get started in something like that??

I dated a DJ once (total @sshat but thats another post). He got started by basically going into the station and offering himself up. He worked as an intern for sometime and moved up the ranks until he had his own timeslot. I'm not sure it would work the same with a talk show but since you've already been to the station I would inquire around as to if there is anything you could do to learn the business and work your way into becoming an integral essential cant live without you on the air talk show soon to be tv show with your own magazine perfume line and tv specials with a lifetime movie of the week about your life host!

I'm sorta trying to do that with this radio show although I don't actually get ot be "in the studio" when i do it. its all just them having me call in. I am coming back on again Monday so maybe I'll ask Mel how she got started with her own show while I'm on air. Get the info straight from the horse's mouth and see what happens. What I'd really like to do is write my own advice column......I'm going to research that and see what I find out.

Hell, start an advice blog anyway!!! I'll be happy to write in some questions to help you get started (if that's how you would want to format it). We are here for each other--you just let me know what you need and I'm ON IT! Great idea, Teri!!! (You are full of great ideas today!)

Thanks you guys!! I feel the same way Teri....like this radio show was brought to me for a reason. I do need a boost and this would be the perfect way to do it. I'm going to be back on Monday!! Not sure what time yet....the producer will get back to me on that.If any of you want to listen go to www.bordersmedia.com and click on the link for Advice For Living with Mel Robbins. It will direct you to listen live or something like that. I'll be on sometime between 1pm and 3pm eastern time (I'll let you know more specifically tomorrow!)
Thanks for the support!!!

Ohhh you know what we should do?! We should call/write the station and let them know how much we enjoy your time on the show. Give them a bit of a nudge. If they see good listener response maybe that will put a bug in their ear about what a jem you would be to their station.

You would do that for me Tera?? That just made me cry....that touched me!! My PMS must be kicking my ass today......but you know what? I don't care. That made my heart happy....thank you Tera!!!radio@melrobbins.com is her email. Go for it....I need all the help I can get!!
Love ya guys!
Yes, Holli! Ask Mel about how to get into doing a radio show! If that's something you feel a spark about (instead of the psychology area she was focusing on) then put her on the spot about it! I like the idea of you starting a 'Help' blog as well! (Blogger is very easy to set up!)
Just a thought ~ An author (Jennifer Chiaverini) used to actually record pod casts FROM HER OWN HOME and post them to her website (elmcreek.net) ~ since she's much more in demand these days, she doesn't have the time so she's no longer doing them. Maybe you could go on elmcreek.net and see if you can used the 'contact' area to send her a message asking her how she did them!
Yes, an email to Mel is also a good idea! I'll hop on that band wagon!

Thanks for the email Holli I am on it! And don't mention it thats what chicks are for. Got your back.

Thanks you guys! This is terrific!! I'm excited now to talk to her on Monday and see what her advice to me will be. In all honesty....I've really been thinking all this over the last few days.....I don't know if I have the energy every day to be on the radio. I think my health may make me too flaky for that. What I would really love to do would be to have an advice column/blog and then freelance for magazines with a column or articles. I've decided that's what I want to do. Both of those things would give me a little more flexibility on the days I need to rest and I feel I would be good at those things. At least 2 times a week I get emails from my friends that start with "So I have a question for you....." or a phone call that says " I need you to hear this......" and I love it. I love being able to help. So can you guys help me get focused and give me a push to do those things?? LOL I need the PUSH!! =) Does anyone know how to start a blog?

Starting a blog is as easy as Paris Hilton after a shot of Red Bull.
I use blogger for mine. It will totally walk you through setting it up. You can customize it there a bit or hack it to pieces (like mine) there are a list of chick blogs on here and that can give you ideas. When you have your blog set up there are different ways to get you more traffic but the quickest would be to send it to friends, post it here and any other message boards you visit. We can also mention you on sk*rt and Digg and maybe get you some traffic that way.
Let us know how we can help.

My husband and I are leaving Texas at the end of the year so we have a list of things to do before we leave. We've just added another one and got a head start on it this past weekend. We've decided to try and visit all of the wineries on the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail. We started this weekend at the Sister Creek Winery and I have to say if you get the chance to try their Reserve Muscat Wine, you will not be sorry. It is my favorite but unfortunately only sold at the winery.

Oooh, great adventure Christal! Keep us up to date! How many wineries are on the trail, by the way? This could be quite an undertaking... :)

Amanda: There are about 20 wineries on the trail but thankfully, some cities have more than one. They will help to make the traveling easier, but those days with three or four wineries might get a little crazy after all those tastings. My husband doesn't often drink wine so he might just try one at a winery. He lets me do all the tasting and choosing.Andrea: I am moving to Colorado Springs in December. It is going to be a big adventure because we are moving smack dab in the middle of winter and I haven't really lived anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon, let alone lived anywhere with snow.
Aaaauuuugh! Just the thought of snow makes me want some hot chocolate. I really wouldn't know how to handle myself. I'll be crossing my fingers and sending delightfully wonderful warm vibes to ya!

Colorado Springs is a lovely area. I lived on the Front Range for about 13 years - 10 years the first time around (for college) in Golden and the western suburbs of Denver then in Boulder for my second stint. The weather usually isn't as bad as you'd think. What you see on the evening news is usually an exaggeration - they always pick the worst spots to show and make it sound like the entire state is under 3 feet of snow even if most areas only got two inches. (not that there aren't big snows occassionally...)
The Front Range is on the dry side of the mountains with the prevailing winds coming from the west and dropping most of the moisture over the ski areas. The weather along the east side of the mountains stays pretty sunny and you can get some wonderful unexpectedly warm days in the winter.
There is lots of beautiful scenery in the area and plenty of things to do and places to explore. You will enjoy it.
I don't know much about C. Springs, but if you need any info on the Denver area or things to do and see in CO, drop me a line.
Thanks Amanda. I'm sure I'll need them, though I think I will enjoy the summer months more there because I won't be in 100+ Texas heat. Thanks Andrea. I'm looking forward to the move. I've visited Denver and it was beautiful there and a lot of fun. The only thing I'm really worried about is driving in the snow. I know they shovel the roads, but I am still a bit worried.
Christal,The best advice I know for snow driving is -
1) Don't Panic
2) Don't make any sudden moves
3) back off on your speed, but don't crawl - you need to reduce your speed for the conditions, but if you go too slow, you be come a traffic obstacle.
SUV Caveat - 4-wheel drive does not mean 4-wheel stop. 4-wheel drive will get you going better in some conditions and give you better handling in some case, but you're breaking isn't better. Most of the snow related accidents I saw over the years of driving in snowy conditions in NW Pennsylvania and in Colorado were people driving SUVs who got going too fast for the conditions.
If you do 1-3 above, you should be fine. Since you aren't an experienced snow driver, you might also try finding an empty parking lot or some quiet side streets after your first snow and practice breaking and turning with snowy conditions.
You'll do just fine, it just takes a bit of practice.
Congratulations on your decision, Amanda! I think having adventures makes your life better and definitely brighter. As for my adventures in 2008, I have a couple. I am getting married and I am going to Paris for two weeks. I am also turning 30, which I know will be an adventure.
Thanks, Kate! Ooooh, Paris. Honeymoon, I assume? Rock on! International travel can be intimidating, so you'll have to give us some pointers. :)

Has anyone been successful at teaching themselves a language? I really want to do this but I dont have residencey yet to be able to take a class. I was wondering if anyone has done this and whats a good program to do it?
I would LOVE to learn Latin. (and Italian and some Spanish).
I am also trying to become more fluent in braille so I can stay one step ahead of my daughter as she learns.
Now if only I could figure out what language my 1yr old is speaking!

I have used several types of cd and computer programs as learning tools. I hear the Rosetta Stone series is pretty good. Some libraries have some good ones you can check out and try before buying. There is a series that I cannot remember the name off hand but its with the Foreign Service Language Institute. They are pretty good. It is loads of reptetition and can seem boring, but they really work. Also depending on the language (Spanish, French or German) many times you can "switch" the language on movies to speak in these languages. That can help you as well after a while. I find the Disney movies good for that!!

i just joined this group today so i had a lot of catching up to do! what a great topic! i felt like i was reading a favorite novel! i find books to be my friends and i miss them while they are gone! and i felt that way as i read through everyones stories. like i have stumbled upon friends that i haven't seen in so long!tera. i speak and write fluent portuguese. learning a language for me was super hard! it is my worst subject! the only way it worked for me is i immersed myself into the language. i lived in brazil for almost 2 years and i only spoke portuguese. i arrived in the country knowing how to say my name and maybe four sentences and of course how to say, "talk slower please!" mais devagar por favor! every day i took out a portuguese/english dictionary and learned a new word. and i would highlight the word once i could use it for a month. that way i knew i had learned the word for real. the most important thing for me was to first learn the verbs and learn how to structure a sentence. like for example.
in english you would say...."will you go to the house with me?"
in portugues you would say..."you go to house with me?"
it is really hard at first but i found that the english language has so many rules and so many words. where the portuguese language has some simple rules and you just use inflection w/your voice to convey meaning.
i carried around a verb "helper". what i did was take all the major verbs like you are, we are, they are.....i go, you go, we go, they go....etc...and i put them on a pocket sized piece of paper and i laminated it. then i carried it every where i went. i pulled it out A LOT the first four months in brazil but after awhile i only needed it once a month or so.
i am trying to learn spanish and italian now. and i am doing something similar where i learn a new word everyday. i use that word 15 times in a sentence a day. i have a verb page for spanish and i am trying to convert my thoughts and things that are said on tv into spanish. it is really hard for me because there are so many similarities to portuguese that i am getting confused at times.
plus i watch movies i like in spanish and italian. that way i can tune my ears to the language. sometimes you just have to relax to understand and you will find yourself picking out words. spain spanish movies are A LOT easier for me to understand and italian movies are super easy for me to understand. i have a REALLY hard time with mexican spanish and i do not understand cuban spanish at all. the accents are what make the language so different for me.
so sorry i took up so much space! the important thing i feel to learning a language is to learn with someone else so you can talk to each other. don't give up! work on it everyday. eventually it will come to you. but this is how i have had to learn a language. oh also reading a book that you like is a good way once you get a little further along in learning.

Thanks so much for your suggestions Faith. I think I am going to do just that. My husband speaks fluent Italian. I really want to learn. I find I can learn the formula of the language but I am so self concious about my accent. I am afraid I will sound like a "stupid american". I have a hard time wrapping my tongue around the letters and accents. I think my biggest issue is going to be getting over that feeling of self conciousness and accept that I am going to sound horrible at first and maybe for a long time to come. Atleast I could learn to read and write?

Its not Tera. I don't know why. No excuses....but I guess I feel like what I have to say isn't important?? Maybe that's what is taking me so long to get started...........

fiddle dee dee. Look back and read over those posts when you were on the radio and thinking about it. You were so excited. I don't believe for one second you don't think you have anything important to say. You may be doubting yourself or unsure but I think just by reading those posts its clear you love it and have an energy and a spark for it so let it out. Start small if you want a blog is cake to start.
(love ya thats why i have to kick your butt every now and then ;) )

You are a sweetheart Tera.....totally made me laugh and thats why I'm glad I have ya!! I need a good swift kick in the ass by Tera every now and then to get me up and running LOLI promise you I will make one this week.........if I don't have a blog by Friday you can torture me by making me read the RLD again.........JUST KIDDING!!!!
(You guys know how much that book drove me crazy....seriously....why does that woman think her life was BAD???) I know I know....I'm letting it go now..... ;)
I completed another adventure! Ran my first 5K last night with two of my girl friends. It was amazing. We've each been training individually for a couple of months. But it was the first time all three of us ran together. We encouraged each other along the way... cheering each other up the final hill. The last stretch nearly brought tears to my eyes. We were calling out "home stretch!,"
"keep running!,"
"walk is a 4 letter word!"
"half way up the hill!"
"last turn!"
and when I heard my friend yell out "last block and we're at the finish line." I almost couldn't contain myself.
for the record, i hate running. but it was an awesome feeling to overcome my hatred for running and actually finish the race.
i posted a picture on my blog... go check it out!

Can't get anything past you huh Tera!!! I'm working on it........I really am.........as we speak even!!! I won't put it up though until I get it the exact way I want it so give me till Monday. I'm going to my first Project Mentor training for Big Brothers Big Sisters today and tomorrow so I'm all consumed in that LOL

hey sydney! i just went to your blog! it is a really cool blog! you did a great job on it! i am so proud of you! you rock! i HATE running myself and you three woman look strong and happy and so exhilarated!
I hate running too... only now it's more of a love hate relationship! Thanks for stopping by my blog! :-)

Hey Faith I laugh because you learned Portuguuse, that's the language I am learning right now! My girlfriend Taylor is there for the US NAvy and I supposedly visiting this next January if the prices to fly do not skyrocket!! But I already speak and read french, spanish and well I remember the dirty words in russian from college. I am one of those geeks who love to learn languages. I am much better in french & spanish though. I just checked out some books and cds at the library this past week. I am listening to them each night. I can already count to 20 very easily and then by tens...also some basic greetings. I just have to remember its like speaking spanish with my horrible cross of OKIE & french accent and its almost correct in pronounication. So I am butchering my french probably way too much and next time I visit they will look at me like I am a total idiot. But I have noticed...yes, even the rudiest french person, they respect you for even trying to speak their language and treat you so much better than those who will not even say the would hello back in their native tongue!! Oh and Tera after Portuguese I want to learn Italian so I can travel there next...Hey by the way Taylor can you get an assignment there next time?? London was great, San Diego fablous, I am sure Rio will be awesome but can you try Rome next please??!!!

I keep a journal of all the adventures that I would like to complete before I die.... I have finished quite a few, skydiving, parasailing, learning how to waterski. The latest was taking a hot air balloon ride. It was an absolute beautiful, peaceful experience. I highly recommend.

Syndey, I hate running, too! Your adventure sounds painful! haha :)
