Sami (puppyplay617) | 5 comments Hey everybody-- I really want to read the book Wicked but I hear it isn't the most appropriate book. Could anyone please tell me why this is or if you think it is ok for a teenager? Thank you so much and I can't wait to hear from you.

I have it at home but havent read it yet. I hear mixed reviews on it as far as people liking it, but I wouldnt know if it is age appropriate.

Then again, as a young teen I was reading Stephen King, so I might be a bad judge :)

Jennifer | 212 comments i have read it twice and loved it! the book is kinda complicated, so you really have to focus when you read it. when i read it the second time i noticed so many things that i didnt notice the first time. there are some situations that, because of the sexual nature, may not be appropriate, but since i dont know you or how old of a teenager you are i cant really say if it would be ok for you to read or not. i was only 21 when i read it (im almost 24 now), and knowing myself, i was very naive as a teenager and i wouldve been quite shocked. so take that into account. but i absolutely loved it and cant wait to see it on stage

Meredith (meredithgayle) | 32 comments Wicked is one of those books you have to read by itself. It has to be enjoyed and savoured. There are some scary parts, so I wouldn't recommend young children read it without their parents guidance. Go ahead and try it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and as soon as I finished Wicked I checked out Son of A Witch.

Bedtime Booknerd (shawtygurl15) I loved this book & also the play...but it does have some scary parts & it gives you a totally different view of the Wizard of Oz that we know as a child...but I think its ok for teenagers...there's nothing there that they haven't heard or seen before now a days...

TO MEREDITH: I want to also read that book...how is it...

Meredith (meredithgayle) | 32 comments I haven't started Son of A Witch yet. I'm a compulsive book borrower, and I have a lot of books to choose from. Though, I'll work on getting to it.

Jennifer | 212 comments son of a witch wasnt as good as wicked, but its still worth a read!

Denise Loza Wicked & Son of a Witch are both good books, although I must say nothing topped Wicked for me.

As far as age appropriateness, well I'm sure a young adult can handle it, but if it's such a concern it's probably best to ask a parent or get guidance from a teacher.

Jennie | 7 comments I read Wicked when I was a teenager. I believe I was about 15 or so. I thought it was fine back then, but that was me. I don't really remember thinking that anything felt inappropriate to me while I was reading it.

Diane (dianedj) Katie wrote: "The entire series is worth reading -- I just finished them over the past month. Wicked is such a good read, that I've read it several times! I do agree with Denise, nothing topped Wicked for me, ei..."

Katie - you say you read the series...what did you think of the third book, the one with the lion on the cover; can't recall the name and I am not at home to check my bookcase.

I enjoyed this book, but it was a challenging read. It's very socio-political in theme as well as having some sexual scenes. I believe it depends on the maturity level of your teenager. I would have enjoyed this less in high school when I was already reading more challenging works for class, but had I read it in college I would have enjoyed it. Best suggestion--read it for yourself and see if you enjoy it, then decide whether to suggest (or allow) your child to read it. Children are exposed to so much without our realization, that a book is the least scary place to learn things about life.

Laura | 56 comments Diane -

For me Lion Amongst Men fell in the Son of A Witch category....interesting but not as good as Wicked. The nice thing about it is that it does close a few circles that started in the first two books.

Gregory Mose | 13 comments I think it's fine for teenagers. There's a bit of sex, but nothing too prurient, and it really is a remarkable book. And I'd say the way in which it takes a familiar story and reweaves it from a totally different perspective is a healthy lesson for any teenager.
