JennyG | 174 comments Considering the following qualifications please add more books to Bodice Rippers Lite - Hero One And Only lover! list.

Requirements for this list:

This list is dedicated to Bodice-rippers Lite, romances that are emotional roller-coasters, romances with loads of DRAMA and misunderstandings. These books are not Politically Correct. They can span several years and take place in different locations. Vast majority of bodice rippers were written in 1970s, 80s, 90s.

HERO is ALPHA, authoritarian, can be cold and controlling. He is usually possessive, obsessive and (very) jealous when it comes to his heroine. He can be cruel and/or display other not politically correct behaviour (spanking, bodice ripping).

There is usually either a forced seduction or rape of the heroine by the hero.

The most important requirement is:

HEROINE is a virgin and hero her one and only lover, no rape or sex with another man/men.

As long as they meet the requirements for this list, historical romances with some paranormal elements and Time Travel romances that are also historicals can be added as well.

I hope you have some good books to add.

Thank you very much in advance.

Looking forward to your suggestions. :)

JennyG | 174 comments We need some feedback on author Melanie George in the comments section of the list. Has she written any romances that might be considered bodice rippers lite?

KatieV | 112 comments lol, the title of the list has caused so much confusion. You have no idea what astruggle this has been. It used to be just 'one and only bodice rippers' which meant a bodice ripper where the heroine has one and only one lover > the hero. No rapes by other men or other lovers. Simple enough? Nope. Some of the top slots on the list quickly went to books such as Monson's Stormfire and others that were infamous for the heroine being raped or gang raped by men other than the hero and/or taking other lovers. So 'lite' was added to distinguish it from those books, as some genre fans don't consider a book to be a BR if there are no multiple partners, etc. So long story short

we're looking for historical BR novels where the h starts out as a virgin and never sleeps w anyone but the H. In grand bodice ripper style, the H may be a raging alphhole and very likely may rape the h himself or commit a forced seduction sorta thing. If you read the description it should be more clear. Basically all the non - pc cray cray of any BR is fine as long as the h is only with the H.

sorry for the ramble

JennyG | 174 comments Since the title of the list had caused so much confusion and there was always a debate which books are bodice rippers I took the suggestion of a fellow romance reader, Seton, and changed the title of the list to

Old Skool Hist. Romances - Hero One and Only Lover!

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

Hist. is short for historical.

Hopefully it is more clear now.

Well, Jenny, this might work for some but it doesn't say "bodice ripper" to me, sorry. Neither does "old school" tell me anything. Here's what I said in my post of my highest rated bodice rippers on my Regan's Romance Reviews blog (http://reganromancereview.blogspot.co...

"Some think this subgenre is comprised of just the classics. That is not so. While many of the classics were bodice rippers, certainly not all were. And, lest you think it’s a subgenre of the past, there are new bodice rippers being released today (some of which are on this list).

At least one of my Goodreads pals defines this subgenre as stories “containing an element of sexual peril.” Possibly that is so, as the ones on my list all have this. But for me, there is usually more. Typically there is a forced seduction involved, an actual ripping of the heroine’s bodice, or even rape, but not always. Let’s just say I know it when I see it."

JennyG | 174 comments LOL, naming this list seems to be hopeless endeavour.

I thought "old skool" fit nicely because as far as I understood it entails non-pc romances, forced seduction, bodice ripping and sometimes rape.

I am open to suggestions regarding the name of the list, but I don't think I/we'll ever be able to please everyone.

Love your list by the way! :)

Thanks, Jenny.

KatieV | 112 comments Yeah, I'm chiming in on the side of 'old skool' too. I often think that when reading something written pre 21st century
You can always tell. Even if the content is similar it's still apparent. I think it is because the authors are so aware that what they've writing is so un-pc that they try to compensate for it in other ways and it just shows.

Anyway, Jenny, I wouldn't worry about trying to make the title or description any clearer. Honestly it was fine to begin with. The problem was some people who know what a BR is didn't bother to read your guidelines and that's how we got the hardcore gang rape nominees. I've been a mod online and you quickly learn that no matter how patiently you describe something, this sort of tomfoolery (I love that word) ALWAYS happens. Don't stress over it, if/when it happens again we can deal with it.
