I thought it was beautifully written. There was an old-world feel to the book, almost like it was written in sepia. The characters are wonderful.
Read the Kindle version. I really got into the book at around 60 percent. I couldn't put the book down from that point forward.I love how the characters are non-humans trying and struggling to be human like they're going through their own existential crises. Especially Chava.
Thank you Helene - our book of the month discussions have slowed down quite a bit, but your book got quite a few votes in our poll to choose a BOTM, and beat out several very popular fantasy novels. Thanks for a great novel and for being willing to participate in our discussion!
I think what I liked most about this book was the relationship between the jinni and the golem. It felt very natural, not forced, and they both maintained there individualistic nature throughout with a fitting ending where not every problem was solved.
I agree with Kim I couldn't put the book down at about that point. That's probably where you start to see how all the characters are connected and everything makes a lot more sense. Really enjoyed the book and I'm glad I managed to catch up before the end of the month.
Beautiful story, I was intrigued from the start because I knew nothing of golems and very little about djinnis, but loved the atmosphere and the going back and forth in time to reveal things about their pasts.
I just finished this wonderful book. The slow build up had a great climax and finish. I couldn't put it down once I got half way through. I'm miserable at work today, but that's okay cause it was worth it.
So, I got to this book a little late for the club, but once it got rolling I really liked it! I particularly liked the different neighborhoods and their inhabitants. A lot of people in this book had some kind of disability, which I liked. It gave the characters nice depth. Ice Cream Saleeh was a favorite. I also liked the theme of bringing the old world into the new, that almost all the characters had baggage and mythology that they carried with them.
