Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Just a reminder, please also include text when referring to books, because you can't hover on mobile devices and tablets, and they are often hard to see (even on my computer).

Thanks! :)

message 202: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Sorry, forgot...

message 203: by Laurel (new)

Laurel May I also suggest The Rook (The Checquy Files, #1) by Daniel O'Malley The Rook.

message 204: by Eon Windrunner (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Oooh, havent heard of that one before. Adding it now :)

message 205: by Eon Windrunner (last edited Mar 18, 2014 03:48AM) (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Is it ok to read the Riyria Chronicles if I have not yet read the Riyria Revelations or should i rather read the latter first?

Chronicles - The Crown Tower

Revelations - Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire, Heir of Novron

message 206: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Yeah, you'd be ok reading the Chronicles first. Though the Revelations were published first.

message 207: by Eon Windrunner (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Thanks Chris. Think I might read the revelations first anyway.

message 208: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I actually read the first half of Revelations then read the Chronicles. I still have to finish the Revelations, and had meant to do so by now. But like all my other plans it got derailed.

message 209: by Eon Windrunner (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Lol. So many books, so little time.

Luke | 333 comments Eon wrote: "Lol. So many books, so little time."

So true. So so true.

message 211: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 74 comments Read Revelations first. The author states that you can do either/or without spoilers - which is nice, BUT, Revelations will drag you in and has a solid ending. Chronicles is open ended.

Also, if you read Revelations first then you have all these "a-hah!" moments, where you can put two and two together, on some lost detail concerning something that happened in Revelations.

message 212: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 74 comments Finished Warbound - LOVED and will sorely miss the Grimnoir. Should I try MHI???

Started up Words of Radiance so I could join in on the buddy read, and it's going nicely.

message 213: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I haven't read MHI yet, I tried to start it a couple times, but didn't really get into it. I will probably pick it up on audio one day, since it seems like that's the only way I can finish a book lately. *sigh*

Excellent. Thanks Kara - Revelations it is.

message 215: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) IMHO, Chronicles has a few spoilers in it, and you might get too many clues as to the big mysteries as well and find the ending of revelations less surprising.

I loved the first two MHI - hubby says the rest are "back for more cash." I didn't care for the GrimNoir as much - hubby enjoyed that one more than MHI.

Oh wow. I'm so screwed.

Though, probably not. I'll forget most of what I've read by the time I get through it.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments So, I'm reading this The Mist in the Mirror book I won from goodreads, and I don't know if it's me or the book or what but I can't get through more than, like, five pages before I start dozing off...

I loved Warbound. I read the Grimnoir books first, then went to MHI and wasn't disappointed. They are quite different though. I think Correia is the master of the action scene.

message 220: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I finished up A Storm of Swords to get ready for the new season. I watch the show with someone who hasn't read the books and she relies on me to tell her what's going on. But I couldn't remember the 3rd book (except for some BIG moments of course) and I couldn't keep faking it...

Next I'm starting A Feast for Crows - if I've read it I remember it even less than Storm of Swords. And then I'm finishing up with A Dance with Dragons - and I know I haven't read this one yet.

I'm also reading 'Salem's Lot - one of the few Kings I've never read. But I'm not feeling it. Really not feeling it. I might give up if it doesn't kick in today.

message 221: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nienna, Salem's Lot gets a lot of love from people, and I did like it, but I never really thought it was anywhere near his best book. If you're not feeling it, you should set it aside until you're in the mood for it.

message 222: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah, I was a bit meh about Salem's Lot, too. I did enjoy the mini-series, though, but that coulda been because Rutger Hauer is always delightfully cheesy.

I gotta do that too! Finished Storm of Swords last year... Ditto even on watching and explaining to a non-book reader.

Lee | 939 comments Colleen wrote: "Yeah, I was a bit meh about Salem's Lot, too. I did enjoy the mini-series, though, but that coulda been because Rutger Hauer is always delightfully cheesy."

Rutger Hauer can make almost anything better. :)

Yeah. I did a lot of faking - and Googling last season. I knew I was in trouble when fans started talking about the 'Red Viper' being in the new season... and I didn't have a clue who they were talking about. Lol. I know I read it. But I forgot A LOT.

Nan (felicityk) | 245 comments Nienna wrote: "...Rutger Hauer can make almost anything better :)"

Enjoyed his role in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

message 228: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments I have a horrid time keeping track of secondary characters with that series. Every time I come back to it, I have to re-learn the whole cast just about.

message 229: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 74 comments I don't understand how anyone can follow the TV show without having read the books...

message 230: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments It's not easy. It's even hard to follow having read most of the books. And the changes they've made throughout make it even harder.
I was just teasing the person I watch it with (my aunt) that it's the only show on TV that needs a family tree guide.

message 231: by Nan (new)

Nan (felicityk) | 245 comments Imaginary helpful DVD feature -- an overlay for any given scene which would name the characters and state their affiliations. The viewer could toggle it on or off like subtitles.

message 232: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hell, that would be nice for the books too!

message 233: by Nan (new)

Nan (felicityk) | 245 comments Oh yeah! You could hover over a character's name and see a pop-up with info.

message 234: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Heh. They'd probably put spoilers in there.

message 236: by Eon Windrunner (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Imagine how long it would take to watch an episode lol.

message 237: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I went to the library yesterday and picked up both Vicious and Seraphina. I had had a hold on Vicious, and it came in, and Seraphina was on the shelves...

But, since it's early, I don't really want to start them yet.

So, in the spirit of the Holmes read I seem to be doing with Emily, I started a re-read of the Enola Holmes books last night. Considering how short/quick they are, I imaging I'll be ready to start Vicious on Monday.

message 238: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Haha - yes it's me and you on the Holmes read. ;) I guess we can accelerate the schedule now if we want. Hahaha.

Have you read the Mary Russell books? Those are one of my favorite Holmes spinoffs.

message 239: by Nan (new)

Nan (felicityk) | 245 comments I liked the early Mary Russell books, the later ones not so much.

I've kinda abandoned any schedule and sort of just read them as I get to them, now.

As to the Mary Russell books - yes, I've read the first, erm, 7 I believe. I loved the first one, but the rest have been sort of hit or miss for me.

message 241: by Sam (new)

Sam Leeves Hey everyone. I had a small break from Fantasy for a couple of weeks (don't worry, I'm as disappointed in myself as you are), but today I picked up The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K Jemisin. I've read the first chapter an it seems really interesting so far.

Does anyone know anything much about it?

message 242: by Eon Windrunner (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) I know Brandon Sanderson loved it, but it is still on my TBR list unfortunately.

message 243: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments I've seen mixed reviews, so it's going to have to wait until I'm caught up on a bunch of others.

message 244: by Sam (new)

Sam Leeves Yeah, I know it has it's fans it's one of the things that drew me to it first. We'll see if it lives up to it :)

message 245: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments In other news, I wrote a little 300 word piece for a competition for an ARC, and the judges include Mark Lawrence and Luke Scull, so I'm pretty stoked that they'll be reading my little story :D

message 250: by Luke (new)

Luke | 333 comments Thanks guys. It's actually a lot harder to restrain yourself to a certain word number than I thought it would be. My tidbit really needed 500 words, but we'll see what happens.
