B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Sounds good. I can feel the need for more experimentation.

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I tried the white wine approach, Kath, using both gooseberries and rhubarb to provide the tart fruity content. In both cases I added some ginger. Delicious - the experimenting is fun and is becoming an entertaining hobby.

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Following another visit to that fine city, I've put up another blog post about Bath.

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Last year we bought an old motorhome and we've been keeping a log of our experiences - good and bad. I've decided to upload that log to my Blog. Experienced motorhomers may be entertained by our naivety. Anyone thinking of taking the plunge may learn from our mistakes and save themselves money and heartache.
The first instalment is up now:

message 105: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Interesting post, Barry. I'll be following these.

message 106: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Thanks, Kath. The posts will get more 'interesting'. It's been a fun and fraught experience.

message 107: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments We considered getting one before we had the kids. But we had kids instead! Even more expensive!

message 108: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Yes - and also a fun/fraught experience. It was when the kids arrived back in the 70s that our cherished VW camper had to disappear.

message 109: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Forwarded it to a friend of mine who has got into the motorhome hire business.
I found it interesting so I'm sure it'll fascinate them :-)

message 110: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Thanks, Jim. Some of the cock-ups we've made will probably make good advertising for the benefits of hiring rather than buying!

message 111: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I've put up the second in the planned series of posts taken from the log of our motorhoming experiences:

http://www.bjburton.co.uk/blog-2/

message 112: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Great reading. I'm waiting for the next problems!

message 113: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments It seems there are always problems - they just keep coming! But we're having a lot of fun along the way.

message 114: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Fascinating stuff

message 115: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I've put up the next in the series of posts about the pleasures and pains of owning a motorhome.

http://www.bjburton.co.uk/blog-2/

message 116: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just caught up with your adventures, Barry. Glad you got it sorted.

message 117: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Thanks, Kath. Well persevered! I don't like putting up such long blog posts without some pictures to break up the block of text, but it's tricky as this is basically a handwritten diary we keep in the motorhome and was not intended as blog material, so I don't have photos that go with the text.

message 118: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Doesn't matter if the writing takes you there.

message 119: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I must confess to enjoying the article.
I'm also forwarding the link to a friend who does 'do' motorhomes and she reckons you're spot on :-)

message 120: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Thanks, Jim. We were on a steep learning curve at the beginning, but one thing we haven't had to work at has been having fun out of it.

message 121: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I've put up a post about the Dr Hook concert we attended last week

http://www.bjburton.co.uk/blog-2/

message 122: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Yep, every so often you realise how old everybody else has got

message 123: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Disturbing isn't it.

message 124: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I remember one elderly female relative muttering 'There's girls pushing prams who ought to be still riding in them'
One of the girls was nearly thirty :-)

message 125: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I know how she feels. I'm frequently taken aback when people who look to me like schoolchildren are introduced on TV programmes as experts on some complex topic.

message 126: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments What rather amused me was with this lass of 20 who's been elected as a SNP MP.
The people who were really scathing about it were aged between 25 and 30 :-)

message 127: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments My mouth hung open when that result was announced. Undoubtedly, she's a very impressive young lady. Overall I was left with the suspicion that in some constituencies the SNP could have put up a Scottie dog and it would have been elected.

message 128: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I wonder whether we've seen an 'EU election' effect. Because the Scots have their own Parliament, Westminster is seen as less relevant. So voting SNP was considered a pain-free way of making a point. Pretty much as so many English people vote for UK in the euro elections.

I'll be genuinely interested to see how the SNP do in the next elections for the Scots parliament

message 129: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Yes, if the SNP members at Westminster successfully negotiate greatly increased powers for the Scottish Parliament it will be very interesting to see if the electorate trust the SNP MSPs to handle those powers.
I wonder if the increased attention that the Scottish Parliament will receive from south of the border will lead to demands for a change in our electoral system to the sort of proportional representation that appears to work well enough for the Scots.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments To be fair Barry, a Scottie dog could do a better job that some of them there! The SNP's performance in next year's election will be mostly down to how they perform in the next twelve months I think Jim. As you say, at the moment they can't do any wrong as far as a lot of people are concerned, and they have made themselves into an apparently viable proposition. Time will tell.

(and I did feel very sorry for you lot in England not having another option in the election other than snooty, smarmy and bleh)

message 131: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments All sympathy gratefully received.

message 132: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Rather belatedly, I've put up another post about our first 12 months of experiences with the motorhome.

http://www.bjburton.co.uk/blog-2/

message 133: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Well I've found them interesting :-)

message 134: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments A readership of one is good enough for me, Jim. ;-)

message 135: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments There are times when I feel I ought to send Christmas cards to those who buy my books as well

message 136: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I'm tempted to send a taxi to pick up all my readers and buy them a drink.

message 137: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments A taxi! I could get mine on the back of a push bike ;-)

message 138: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm late catching up with this, Barry. It's been one of those weeks when you ask yourself if you really have retired. I've only visited this area once but I'd love to go again. You should be on pay from the Dorset Tourist Board!

message 139: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments You could have a good point there, Kath. I've just been waxing lyrical about Thomas Hardy and Dorchester in another Goodreads group.
And you're quite right about retirement, too. I was never this busy when I had to work for a living.

message 140: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments A blog post to mark the end of our first season with a motorhome.

http://www.bjburton.co.uk/blog-2/

message 141: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments It's been interesting

message 142: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I've put up a final post in the series about motorhomes. This one covers our search for a different motorhome based on what we'd learned from our first 12 months and what we now have as our 'perfect' solution.

http://www.bjburton.co.uk/blog-2/

message 143: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That mouse attack sounds frightful! Glad you've found your ideal home now. Enjoy it, and thanks for taking us on the journey, too. :)

message 144: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Glad you came along, Kath.

message 145: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Fascinating stuff. I'm never likely to buy one but I've got friends with them and even one friend who hires them out so it's been really interesting to get the detail :-)

message 146: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Cheers, Jim. I confess we have become obsessive about it. We get back from one trip, catch up on the chores (mainly garden) as quickly as possible and set off again.

message 147: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Hey, you know what they say, "Eat when you're hungry, love while you're young." :-)

message 148: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I can't remember who said this, but I agree with whoever it was.
"In my heart I always sympathise with those who deal with temptation by giving in to it."

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The only exercise I get is wrestling with temptation.

message 150: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Ten rounds, decided by two falls or a submission? I'd go for the submission.
I've remembered who said it - it was Ken Follett.
