Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments For a book that scares you, you can select a book that seems a bit overwhelming (due to its size) or that is a challenging read (such as a classic) or one you just keep putting off for one reason or another. It could even be one that you have heard is heavy going due to its content. I think my choice fits all these!!

Darkpool | 1032 comments Tempted to give this a go... how pedantic are we about the timeframe? can I include books I've already started? (thinking of Wool, which I've read 11% of, but which got bumped when a more demanding book showed up)?

From my point of view we aren't too pedantic about the time-frame, whether you get finished in the allotted time. I don't see any problem with counting a book you have begun before the start date and finish after that. I hope this is right since my first book I'll be marking off fits this scenario! In fact you would be more in the clear than me because I'd read almost half before the start date. :)

It's all about joining in - and in your case making me green with envy at the audios you can get that I can't.

I've been like a pig in muck ever since the Auckland libraries amalgamated. Best thing to come out of the super-city in my humble opinion!

Darkpool | 1032 comments 2014 BLK Autumn Reading Challenge
Timeframe: March 1 - May 31, 2014

6/10

Read a book…
1. ...that has been on your real-life bookcase for way too long (Patient Bookcase Dweller) - Voices from the Moon: Apollo Astronauts Describe Their Lunar Experiences. Bought this for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11, and still haven't read it.

2. …that is at the other end of your Goodreads to-read shelf (Languishing Literature)

3. …with a one word title - Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1)

4. …that became a movie - Stardust

5. …that scares you - The Great Roxhythe by Georgette Heyer. I have decided to read all Heyer's historicals in chronological order of setting, and this is where I'm up to. It scares me because Heyer despised this book so much she did not allow it to be reprinted in her lifetime. Nor is it well reviewed! However, having set myself this task, I must get through Roxhythe if I'm to move on to the more palatable regencies. My copy is a 1929 impression, which I found on TradeMe a few years ago.

6. …by a female author - Daughter of Smoke & Bone

7. …of non-fiction

8. …you heard about on-line - Dangerous Women (although this may fit the bill for scary books - over 700 pages!!! yikes!!) read 10 of the stories: 330-ish pages, which sounds like a book-worth to me.

9. …set in the past - A King's Ransom

10. …set in a high school - Twin Spica, Volume: 10 and Twin Spica: Volume 11

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments Agree! An amazing trip down memory lane, Kathleen. And I'm anything but pedantic about the timeframe, Darkpool. It's there for a bit of guidance, but is very elastic and blurry. Glad you could join us :)

Congratulations Kathleen! 10/10!

There is a week left of May. I'm halfway there. I got out a non-fiction from the library & I'm reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson which takes place in highschool, so that's at least 2 more books :)

Good luck everyone!

Lesley | 1594 comments OMG can't count!! It's only 4 books I've read so far AND I wasn't reading #5 so it's even worse! I'll try for one more before 31 May comes to an end.:(

message 26: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments I have 5 completed, now that I've decided that Twin Spica #10 and 11 probably qualify as set in a high school, and one more nearly complete (became a movie), and another that I've at least started...
