NetanellaMarch Reading Challenge - The Walking Dead Edition
In honor of the return of Season 4 of the Walking Dead, our March Reading Challenge will be based on it. No levels, no shorts, just an opportunity to read zombie books with a Walking Dead feel. You pick how many you want to read this month!
Duration: March 1 - March 31, 2014 Read 1 - 6 Books
1. Rick is a cop when The Walking Dead first begins. Read a zombie book where one of the main characters is in law enforcement.
2. Michonne is known for her ability to wield her swords with deadly intent. Read a zombie book where one of the preferred weapons is a sword.
3. Daryl and his brother Merle have a love/hate relationship from early on in the series. Read a zombie book that features a fractured family relationship.
4. The Governor of Woodbury was the villain we all loved to hate. Read one of the Governor trilogy novels.
5. Read one of the Walking Dead graphic novels.
6. Prisons and inmates play a predominant role in The Walking Dead. Read a zombie novel where that has a prison in it, or where one of the characters is or was an inmate.

I just finished reading all of the graphic novels. They are really good...dark, dark, dark...but good. I also read the first book in the Governor trilogy and enjoyed it; I've got the second book on hold at the library :)
P.S. - Just looked at my own profile/update feed and realized it is currently 70% "The Walking Dead" related content. I guess this challenge started early for me!
Sara
The main character in Ben Tripp's "Rise Again" is a female sheriff...
Also, in Joe McKinney's "Dead City", the protagonist is a San Antonio police officer...
For family dysfunction, Diana Rowland's "My Life as a White Trash Zombie" would certainly qualify (although it isn't a typical zombie story as these zombies have a conscience...boooooo!). As a bonus, I believe the main character is also a convicted felon (not sure if she does time in prison, though).
For prison system, you could also try Jonathan Maberry's "Dead of Night". In this book, the outbreak starts when "a prison doctor injects a condemned serial killer with a formula designed to keep his consciousness awake while his body rots in the grave".
3. Fractured family relationship: The Reapers Are the Angels - 3/1/14, ★★★★ *** I consider the Griersons to be my "fractured family" in this selection. Bit of a reach, perhaps; however, in contrast to this novel's protagonist, I remain unrepentant!! ***
5. Walking Dead graphic novel: The Walking Dead Volume 19 TP: March to War - 3/6/14, ★★★★ I've finished both the compendiums plus volumes 17 & 18, so that just leaves volume 19 for me. Volume 20 is due to come out later this month :)

OK - I'm in. Anyone else doing this thing with me? <--- I changed my dog; hopefully you still recognize me :) Cough, Cough Where art thou, Netanella?
TeresaSara wrote: " Anyone else going to join us???"
Ummmm....I think I'll join the one on the left...yeah...no rabid zombie dogs for me, thanks! ;-)
Netanella wrote: "LOL - hilarious! I have to admit, I almost didn't recognize Teresa after her avatar grew a moustache..."
Yes, I changed from a malinger-er to a monocle, mustachioed man. ;-)
I am not entirely sure if I'm going to do this one or not. I guess it depends on what books I can get my hands on that fit the parameters that I actually want to read. I need to unpdate the ongoing genre hunt, too. Those Day by Day books gave me a few....I just need to find time to sort them all out. Who knows when! Anyway, once I decide how much my book budget is gonna be this month, I'll let you gals know my plans. I'm thinking I may just do a "Me March" month where I don't do any book of the months, buddy reads, challenges, etc. It might help me get outta Jack Nicholson in The Shining mode. This snow is making me C-R-A-Z-Y!!!! Friggin 3 feet plus so far this year!!! But I have wanted to read the Governor's books for a while, so who knows? I think (shhhh...don't tell!!!) I may be a little burnt out on zombies! GASP! *hangs head in shame* Its just that I read soooo many other genres, especially modern lit and Bizarro and I kinda miss them, what with all the buddy reads and group reads I been doin. I'm gonna check and see if I'm not more productive when I'm reading all these 'to-be-read ASAP' piles that have been accumulating throughout my home. None of my friends have them on their 'to-read' so buddy reads are out and most of them don't fit the parameters of ANY of the groups I'm in. Oh well...we'll see. I know I won't be able to stay away from my besties on the Zombies! threads! My my! What's a girl to do? (And you guys KNOW its nothing personal that I may be sitting this one out, right? Actually, I may finish February's cause I *really* wanna read those zombie fairy tale novellas. I LOVE re-tellings of fairy tales. Wow...I can ramble even in a parenthetical...that's bad!) WHEW! I need to learn to be a woman of less words...face-palm...sorry, guys! ~Teresa~
3. Daryl Merle Fractured Family: Zom-B by Darren Shan - 03.17.2014 (★★★★★) B's family is fractured - racist dad with a propensity for wife and child abuse. lovely. who needs zombies?
4. The Governor: TBD
5. The Walking Dead graphic novel: The Walking Dead, Issue #1 - 03.02.2014 (★★★) I know I might get pulped for this, but I read just the first issue, not a graphic novel. And for about 10 pages, I couldn't give it more than 3 stars.
Sara
Hey - why is your Governor selection still TBD? You definitely need to start with the first one if you haven't read it already.
I ordered Exit Kingdom by Alden Bell...it just arrived in the mail yesterday. I'm having surgery in May that will require 6 weeks of recuperation...trying to hold off on reading it until that's all I'm able to do :)
Netanella
Yea, I have a feeling I won't be able to meet this month's challenge - I'm woefully behind a lot of things.
The reviews for the Governor series looked mixed...not sure I wanted to go there when are so many other great books out there....Shan's Zom-B was awesome, however!
Sara
I felt that the first Governor book was pretty good, but that might be because around the time I was reading it, I had acquired and was pretty immersed in the whole graphic novel series. The second Governor book, IMHO, is really nothing special.
