Prologue set in 1086 England. Villages marked as 'Wasted" in the Domesday Book: everything is dead, died of starvation with a full belly. Second part is at St Peter's Basilica where a trap is set for a priest who has a book with the same markings as on the village church from above. He is killed at the same time as meeting a familiar character: Monsignor Verona.

Also, Andrea Solderitch,a Princeton research assisstant, is put into protection by a Homeland security agent, Scot Harvath...apparently the same character as used in Brad Thor's novels

Finding out more about the Guild: it is an organization that spans everything but is run by an inner circle of high powered individuals that collectively are known as Echelon. It appears this group calls all the shots.
