message 1: by Jackie M (new)

Jackie M | 452 comments I have done this a few times when I am reading a book that I'm not loving.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic My moods vary and sometimes (even with a good book) I'll have to switch gears (or genres). So I am always juggling a min. of 2 or more books.

message 3: by new_user (new)

new_user Occasionally. Usually not if I'm really enjoying the book I'm readng. I like to immerse myself.

message 4: by Chasidy (new)

Chasidy I usually start on a different book if Im not enjoying it so much. Most times I do try to finish the book before starting on a new one.

message 5: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 286 comments I'm no good multi-tasking:} If I try to do this then I loose interest with all the books and end up not reading anything at all. I then have to start something new and go back to the books that I'd half started at a later date. it all becomes just too tiresome.:)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) For the most part, NO! but I have maybe a time or two laid down a book that didn't grab my interest and go on to another and came back to the other at a later date.

message 7: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I can't read more than one at time. I feel like I'm cheating or something. If I'm part way through book 1 and start book 2, I never seem to concentrate on book 2. It's better for me if I finish a book at a time.

message 8: by Yz the Whyz (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 17 comments I used to read only one book at a time, but for the past years, I've noticed a change in my reading. More often than not, I read at minimum two books at a time, usually of different genre.

Right now, I'm in between 4 books (a paranormal chicklit novel, a historical paranormal romance, a young adult urban fantasy audiobook, and a western erotica e-book).

Interesting enough, I have no problem picking up where I stopped in a certain book, even if I read several at the same time.

message 9: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments half a dozen usually. Gotta switch with my moods

message 10: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 654 comments I usually have more than one book going, but in different genres. I have my romance or sometimes another fiction book that I usually read daily. Then I have a non-fiction book on the side that I pick and read a chapter from occasionally, or I'll take it with me to appointments and such because I find it easier to put down on a whim. I might also have a children's book that I'm reading with the kids, especially during the summer, and I often have one or more anthologies going, because I usually only read one story at a time when I'm in the mood for something short.

message 11: by Nikki ♥ (new)

Nikki ♥ I try to read one book at a time, but if it's not holdng my interest I'll start another and then go back and finish the book later.

message 12: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I try not to right now, I want to but I haven't done so in a long time.

I usually stick to only one book at a time, but I occasionally will read two. They have to be REALLY different though. In other words, maybe a fantasy and a romance...

message 14: by Niko (new)

Niko Llewyn (nikollewyn) Almost always, I like the variety. Though lately (since starting a new and hectic job) I've been doing one at a time;since I only have time to read during my commute. = (

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 244 comments Im an like some others here. I try not to but if the book im reading isn't that good I will start the second book.

message 16: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 360 comments Almost always, both for variety and because some books are so intense (& long) that I need a lighthearted diversion at the midway point. And there's always at least one audiobook as well. My hubby wonders how I can keep track, and I remind him that he watches about a dozen weekly TV series and manages to keep track of the plots and characters! Some books, tho, are so good that everything else is put aside while I read only that one.

message 17: by SoBeA (new)

SoBeA (sobe1982) | 39 comments For me it depends on my moods and how good the book is. If a book is really good, I won't read anything else. If it's not, then I pick up another book. If that one's not any good, I pick up another, and so on.

I usually come back to the one's I've already started, but I usually have to forget how bad it was first. Sometimes though I'll come back to a book, and can't for the life of me figure out why I didn't like it in the first place!

A few times though, I won't be able to concentrate on a book, no matter how good/bad it is. If I push myself to keep going, there's a higher chance I won't like it. So in that case I usually abandon the book for a few days (sometimes weeks) before getting back to it. In the meantime I can usually find something else to read that fits how I'm feeling better.

I used to tell myself I couldn't read a new book until I finished the one I'd already started, but then it felt like I didn't have any choice, and for me, that's the fastest way to lose interest in reading altogether, so I got over it (thankfully) :)

message 18: by Nona (new)

Nona (goodreadscomnona) | 102 comments never, reading a book is like a relationship to me, if I read another book while committed to another I feel like I'm cheating the book/author. My husband laughs at me for thinking that way but if your not fully committed to it you might give up or lose 'sight' of it and then well what do you have but a wall-banger?

message 19: by Ann (new)

Ann Noell (fantasyannie) Most of the time no, but if I'm reading a hard copy I do not like to take it to work with me so I will take a paper back to read on my lunch. Sometimes if I just can't get into a book I will start another one, but then most of the time I will not go back and finish the one I didn't like. If after a few chapters I can't get into the book I will not waist my time on it.

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 617 comments I do it constantly. Usually just because I always like to have something to read so if my current book isn't around I pick up what looks good near by. And I always have a book I keep in my car so the one I'm reading before bed can stay next to my bed. So that makes it at least two at once, but sometimes I'm in the mood for something other than what I'm currently reading so it turns into one next to my bed, one in my car and one in my bag at all times.

I almost never read more than one book at a time, b/c I end up passing up one of the books and forget about it. LOL However, lately I have been reading several at once. I think it is b/c I haven't been in a reading mood lately, and it helps to switch it up when I feel like that...

Same here...must be something in the air. I usually never read more then one but lately I've been reading atleast two. I'm already on 7 books this month and I'm about to finish my 8th.

message 23: by southpaw285 (new)

southpaw285 I usually read two at a time, but they are usually very different.

message 24: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments always. DIfferent genres to suit my different moods

message 25: by Teryl (new)

Teryl I have before, but I don't do it a ton. Of course I almost always have a readable book and audio book going at the same time.

message 26: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 1184 comments Absolutely. I usually have at least three going at a time. One is always in the 'special reading room' ... that's usually something that I can read a bit at a time and not lose my place in ... right now it's Second Spring Dr. Mao's Hundreds of Natural Secrets for Women in Premenopause and Menopause, but has also been things like The Federalist Papers In Modern Language Indexed for Today's Political Issues, or one of the Complete Idiot's Guides.

I also have something going on my Kindle, and the third is a book that I can carry around to places I'm not willing to take the Kindle.

message 27: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 778 comments I think my whole life I've always read more than one book at a time. I've got three books I'm reading at home. No, make that four. Plus one I'm reading on my iPhone. I just pick up whatever I feel like at the moment.
