Randal G the book where that river catches fire?
If it is it is the best book.

Kristie great book and worth passing on.

John You're thinking of A Clash of Kings

message 4: by Cristóbal (new) - added it

Cristóbal Rodríguez Yes, the Blackwater burns in A Clash of Kings. A Storm of Swords is the one with the... wedding matters...

Arianne A clash of kings was my favorite. I basically wept like a child in A Storm of Swords because of the deaths in this book. I wasn't mentally and emotionally prepared for the events in the Red Wedding.

the red wedding is the best/worst scene in the four books.

I wanted to trhow my Kindle across the room when I read the red wedding scene. Was not prepared for that at all.

Arianne Seriously, why'd you think GRRM killed off Robb and Catelyn? Are their deaths more pivotal to the story than if they continue to live?

Megan After they way he's brought Catelyn back? Maybe. But I don't know why Robb had to die.

Maja Megan wrote: "After they way he's brought Catelyn back? Maybe. But I don't know why Robb had to die."

I was extremly upset after he died...
But maybe it was for a reason... He kept winning and with so many books coming out after that, it wouldn't be as interesting. Plus, he did break a promise to Freys, and being that they are the villans, they had to do something big for us to hate them even more... I like that GRRM doesn't do - ''It all has to be perfect and work out great'' thing... because at the end, real life is not like that. You never know what is going to happen, who will get sick, who will die, who will be ok...

Angela I had nightmares after reading the Red Wedding chapter. I had to take an extensive break from this series after I finished A Storm of Swords. I am currently reading A Dance with Dragons and I keep waiting for the axe to fall again.

Maggie I was super pissed they killed Robb off too. I mean, who will lead the Starks to victory now?? I was pretty mad about Catelyn too but, I think zombie Catelyn will be pretty important in the future. Course, she hasn't mad an appearance in A Dance yet....

message 13: by Kyle (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kyle A Storm of Swords was my favorite so far. By far the most unpredictable. Just when you think Robb will redeem the Starks, he's gone. I have a feeling Bran (or even Rickon) will play a significant role, but with GRRM, who really knows?

Arianne Kyle wrote: "...I have a feeling Bran (or even Rickon) will play a significant role, but with GRRM, who really knows? "

I'm very excited to read about Bran and Coldhands!

Angela Now that I have finished reading A Dance With Dragons, I have to seriously contemplate whether GRRM will finish the series. I have enjoyed the series thus far, but I am not holding my breath! We may never know if the Starks are redeemed!

Megan Angela: I've had the same feeling since A Clash of Kings. His characters are great, some of them are REALLY great but he's just putting too much into these books. I haven't read DWD yet and am wondering if I should just hold out until he finishes the series. IF he ever does. Maybe he'll keep milking it for so long that he pulls a Jordan and dies before he can complete it. Please no!!

I am about 500 pages into Dragons and I have to say that, to me, it feels like its not moving forward a lot... just a little frustrating...

Megan Maja: That does not give me much hope.

message 19: by Maja (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maja And now I read that he might not be able to finish it in 7 books and might need to write book 8... He is trying to wrap it up in 7, but he might not be able to... Not happy!

Megan And then it'll be 9 or 10 if he's still making good money off of it and HBO continues to want to carry on with their miniseries'. I tell you, I can see it happening.

message 21: by Maja (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maja That would suck if nothing happens in the books... And is just stretched out...

message 22: by Lady (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lady Personally I'm pretty worried that he will die before he finishes the series....(Robert Jordan anyone?) He is kinda old and not exactly in the best shape.

Nicole Maja wrote: "Angela wrote: "Now that I have finished reading A Dance With Dragons, I have to seriously contemplate whether GRRM will finish the series. I have enjoyed the series thus far, but I am not holding ..."

Well, as Martin wrote in (I think) the foreward to book 5, the narrative isn't really meant to move forward in the typical way. He's really just presenting us with parallel events. It is kind of crazy that all the characters haven't aged more than a couple of years after thousands of pages!

Maja Nelly wrote: "Maja wrote: "Angela wrote: "Now that I have finished reading A Dance With Dragons, I have to seriously contemplate whether GRRM will finish the series. I have enjoyed the series thus far, but I am..."

I just feel that, if he continues in this way with the next 2 books, I just don't see how he is going to finish and wrap up all the stuff he needs to...

Nicole agreed!

Jason This series was originally proposed by Martin to be only six books--6!!! We now see that this isn't the case at all. Book 7 already has a title--THE WINDS OF WINTER. I know they say to not judge a book by it's cover but this title doesn't give one hope he'll be finishing it up any time soon. Plus, DANCE is one half of one book (FEAST being the other half) & I have to wonder how many more times this will happen again:
MARTIN (to Editor): Here's my latest manuscript. It's gonna be roughly a 2,000 page novel.
EDITOR: That's too long for the binding, George.
MARTIN: That's okay. We can split into two novels just like we did before. Then I can do a lot of re-writes. It'll be good for the plot or should I say, plots? Also, I've got another WILD CARDS book to keep the fans distracted.
& then we, as fans, wait another six or seven years for him to get around to finish the re-writes. So we sit & we wait.
(BTW: I too was very upset with the Red Wedding & was totally blindsided by it. Poor Starks. & now their cousins, the Karstarks, have turned against them. Will they ever get a break?)

Nicole It would be nice --and satisfying for the reader--if at least Arya and Jon were reunited but since Martin never creates those kinds of reunions, I doubt it will happen. It's a cruel world in Martin's universe.

My only concern is that GRRM probably doesn't have another two decades. He's not exactly in the flower of his youth anymore.

Megan Maybe his wife can get Brandon Sanderson to finish his books too. That man has done wonders with the Wheel of Time series after Jordan died and I have a feeling Martin will not get these done in his lifetime either.

Jason Casey wrote: "Jason wrote: "This series was originally proposed by Martin to be only six books--6!!! We now see that this isn't the case at all. Book 7 already has a title--THE WINDS OF WINTER. I know they sa..."

Yes, your right. THE WINDS OF WINTER is the sixth book. I just got ahead of myself--probably because I want to see some of the countless plots get tied up. I'm tired of waiting for years for the next book. Waiting for A FEAST FOR CROWS nearly killed me & then the wait for A DANCE WITH DRAGONS became even worse--I almost gave up. As for finishing by book #7, I still say he's going to split another one into two books--if he lives that long. @ Megan: I don't know if he'll live to finish the series, but I haven't read B. Sanderson to know if he'd do a good job. I have his novel, THE WAY OF KINGS, on my "to read" list. It's a huge book & I hope it's worth it.

Megan I really liked it. His first novel, Elantris was really good too. He's got a lot of original ideas that make his books easy to read and get into. It's never just same ol' same ol'.

Nicole Casey wrote: "Jason wrote: "Casey wrote: "Jason wrote: "This series was originally proposed by Martin to be only six books--6!!! We now see that this isn't the case at all. Book 7 already has a title--THE WIND..."

LOL

Georgie 62 isn't that old... Stop over-reacting, he's probably got at least another 15years in him. Maybe more. That should be enough time for him to finish off the books. No one likes to die with an unfinished project.

I understand what you are saying & I hope you are right, but Martin LOVES going to conventions to be adored by his fans. I've personally seen it with my own eyes quite a few times--especially at Comic Con 2006. He abandoned novel writing in the 1980s to make it big in television--writing, developing--& was so-so in his accomplishments. Now that he's doing fantastic with A SONG OF ICE & FIRE & having a huge hit with the HBO series, he's making up for lost accolades. Plus, he's making a killing while doing it. All of his books are on the bestseller list--again!--& the Seven knows how much he'll make on the dvd box sets.

Again, I hope you're right. I want him to finish. But he also needs to focus. This 4-6 years between books is too much.

Nicole I really don't care if I ever get to read books 6 and 7 as long as Martin gets the chance to enjoy life and receive the love and admiration of his fans. He has afforded me the privilege of experiencing his exciting books and I am grateful for that. He owes me nothing as a reader. Absolutely nothing.

Georgie @Nelly, just because an author owes me nothing doesn't stop me from being disappointed if their series is left unfinished :]

Nicole True.

Jason Georgie wrote: "@Nelly, just because an author owes me nothing doesn't stop me from being disappointed if their series is left unfinished :]"

Agreed.

Kirby Georgie wrote: "@Nelly, just because an author owes me nothing doesn't stop me from being disappointed if their series is left unfinished :]"

yep, agreed again.

Chris Ward I only discovered Martin in 2010 and read the first three back to back so I can't remember where one book ends and the next starts. Damn, what a story. I didn't like part four as much because all the guys in the south weren't so interesting. Got to get to reading the fifth though...!

Stacey Jason wrote: "This series was originally proposed by Martin to be only six books--6!!! We now see that this isn't the case at all. Book 7 already has a title--THE WINDS OF WINTER. I know they say to not judge..."

I had read somewherethat the series was only going to be a trilogy and that Storm of Swords was going to be it. That made me wonder about the mass death in the book - maybe he was killing everyone off?

Stacey He MUST have it set out where he is going with the characters. I can't imagine writing a saga like this and not having an outline of some sort saying what is going to happen, etc. I don't believe the books are written because its obvious they take him years in some cases but I can't think that he would write a series of this magnitude and not know where he is going with it.

LOL, that being said, sometimes I do feel like we are going in circles with it all!

Guillermo Stacey wrote: "He MUST have it set out where he is going with the characters. I can't imagine writing a saga like this and not having an outline of some sort saying what is going to happen, etc. I don't believe ..."

In an interview, I heard GRRM say he actually has told the HBO producers where he's going to take this story in case something happens to him. Wouldn't that be something? In the end, assuming the series survives at least 3 or 4 more seasons to tell showcase the 5 books, HBO may be the medium that finishes telling
GRRM's saga!

message 44: by Emma (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emma I also heard that when asked how he envisaged the series ending (the book series, not the show), he reportedly said something along the lines of (and this is not a direct quote):

"I picture a dark and barren landscape with snow drifting over broken tombstones"

Good Lord! :P
