♥ Nothing Better Than Reading!! ♥ discussion

I feel like I haven't stopped to breathe in days. Even though I have seen the TV show and knew what was coming.....waaaaaaaaah!
I've read that the book is actually influenced by European history (War of the Roses) This book is a fantasy story, but similar things have actually happened to actual people. I find myself really grateful to be living in a more-or-less safe, peaceful time and place.

It's so well-written, and the characters are so coplex and brilliant.

I think what I mostly love about the books is that although it's fantasy, it can be neatly applied to today's world.

Finally!finished the book(had started to wonder whether i would ever finish it at all).To tell the truth,i am totally confused, overwhelmed and disturbed. Not even sure whether i liked it or not.So i will just take the liberty of rambling a little bit:P
It was an entertaining read on the whole but i can't effectively describe what i really liked about the book without pointing out the shortcomings.
The narrative was well thought out.You could view the story from several povs. But it grew very confusing and sometimes boring.Various names for the same person and such a huge number of characters that i was left wondering "who exactly is this person?"and "what is he doing here?"and "how is he even important?"And it didn't happen just once. And it was oftentimes a little too descriptive and sometimes pointless. It became so irritating that i found myself just skimming through certain pages reading only the dialogues between the characters. The setting of the book was intricately designed, however, and it was fascinating to imagine how it might look on screen.
The plot was complex with a lot happening at once. But it didn't really make sense all the time and a lot of things happened just out of sheer foolishness of some of the characters. Also, apart from the main plot, factors like direwolves, the others, the onsetting winter, the dragons, etc.,were quite interesting and important to keep the plot alive:PI mean what happened at the end was enough to get you running for the next book in the series!
The characters were all multi-dimensional and likeable. They were believable and every bit human(except for the violent part) with their own strenghts and weaknesses.Even a lord was not all knowing and mighty. Each one of them showed certain level of vulnerability and indecisiveness.Having said that, some of them were unbelievingly stupid,i must say.A normal person can't be that stupid!I mean there were times when i was so frustrated that all i wanted to do was to just throw the book out of the window and put an end to all that frustration and desperation:PAt the end, however, maybe cuz i was too exhausted,i didn't care for any of the characters at all.It was too overwhelming.
As to whether i will finish the series or not..i feel quite positive that i will wade my way through,somehow..But right now,i want a long break from reading :P I am exhausted
Agree with you on a lot of points. Firstly, even I thought that the book was, at places, quite confusing. Everyone had several names and in many chapters, I had to actually read the whole summary from 'A Wiki of Ice & Fire' to understand what was what and who was who. A lot of parts, for me too, were descriptive and I too skimmed through many huge paras reading just the conversations between the characters. Also, I simply loved the characters of the book. So complex, intriguing and deep - each has another side of himself. Loved reading about them. Hope the books get better!

It also helps to have seen the TV show.

Yes, it does help to have some kind of reference coz sometimes in the book I was completely lost!:P

Kinda puzzling. Why on earth would anyone choose this book to discuss, right now, right at this moment, when it is in the height of its 'buzz'? Isn't that basically just an invitation to 'gossip'? Everyone--every gaggle of book-skimmers on the net is probably gabbing and clucking over it. How is this a challenge, how is this 'stretching' anyone? Why not just discuss 'American Idol', or some other media event?
Why not discuss a real BOOK? Just sayin'.
