I liked this book, though I expected more from the story and characters. Maybe I'll read the next book, but as I said, the story needs "something."

I finished this yesterday. I thought it was pretty good, but definitely lacked some stuff like world building. I felt like the ending came kind of fast compared to the pace of the rest of the book.

I realize she lost her husband and her baby was still-born but move on a bit. Its a survivalist word and your little girl needs her mother. Okay, read this in one sitting! Fast read after reading A Game of Thrones and City of Stairs.

While this is definitely not running for best book of the year, I enjoyed it! Maybe I felt this whole lack of water thing in a personal way, as my region is going through an awful drought (the worst in 80 years), and we're having issues with water supply (some days we get water, some we don't)

This doesn't have a very good world building, but what author says does make sense (water wars). I felt it's more about survival and building relationships in a hostile environment than plot and world building.

Up to Chapter 6 (pg 49)

Definitely an interesting world so far, and a scary and somewhat realistic one at that. Lynn is pretty interesting right off the bat.

What would you do in Lynn and Mother/Lauren's situation? Would you stay and try to protect the lake where you know you'll have a water source, even in the frigid winter, or would you risk it and head south, hoping to find drinkable water along the way? On one hand, I think I would be like Lynn and try the "safe" option of staying at the house where the source of water is there and you know the layout. On the other hand, there is safety in numbers a lot of time, which they don't have at the house. Instead, it appears it puts a target on their back as they try to protect their resource. Such an interesting problem/choice to be made.

And that last scene! (view spoiler)[I did not expect the coyotes to come and kill Mother! I definitely didn't expect Lynn to accidentally shoot her while aiming for the coyotes. On one hand, it seems the plot is so rushed at this point, but it was so unexpected it definitely added intensity (hide spoiler)].

Liking it so far, and definitely interested to see where the story goes next.

With the frequent reminders of what a sharp shooter Lynn is, I find it (view spoiler)[hard to believe that she could have botched the incident with the coyotes so bad to shoot her mother instead of the coyotes. I know she was probably panicking with adrenaline pumping, but you would still think she'd make sure she had her mark right (hide spoiler)]

I realize, however, how pivotal to the plot that scene was. But I wish it had been done a little better. Now, with the introduction of (view spoiler)[Eli and the small family, I'm getting that uneasy feeling that this novel is going to turn into YA romance very quickly, especially since the author went through the effort of pointing out that Lynn fell asleep picturing Eli instead of her mother. Not too excited about that prospect, but like how she hadn't realized she was pretty or how she didn't care. Looks matter less and less when survival becomes a struggle. (hide spoiler)]

Just curious to see if anyone else was still planning on doing this buddy read. =)
