Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis - Restarting August 28th 2015
Yes. It's been in my shelf for a while, and I can't wait to read it. If you want to, you can join us.
I started reading this a little earlier. Was in search for a good book and since this one was really praised.Chapter 1-8
(view spoiler)
I read the first three chapters last night--I was really tired--and, so far, I've loved it. It's really fast-paced and easy and interesting to read. But I'll read more today, and I will talk more specific about it.
Face-peaced? Yeah, you could say that. To me it feels a little fast and disconnected because it concentrates on the action and how Lynn should survive, but not that much on the world building. Maybe it's just me, but I'm a little disappointed... and a little bored. I'll put this aside for now and wait for you to catch up. I'm at ch 10 now :) .
I'm going to join this too. :)Will probably be a bit slower though and read it over the next two days.
Sarah wrote: "Chapter 2 [spoilers removed]"Yeah, her mother was a wierd cookie. Kinda harden by the life she had to lead in order to protect her daughter.
Abbie wrote: "Chapter 9 - [spoilers removed]"Yeah. Prepare for a character driven story. This doesn't have much of the world building material, but the characters were enjoyable. :)
Sarah wrote: "Chapter 13 [spoilers removed]"Haha, poor Stebbs.
This turned out to be pretty predictable.
Chapter 16:
(view spoiler)
I'm in chapter 13 now. Okay, I like the story and characters, but sometimes I hate Lynn's attitude, though I know that what she does, she does it to protect herself and others.
I'm done with this and I must admit I'm quite disappointed :( .(view spoiler)
In short:
["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
"where do they get the coffee and hot chocolate from?"Same place they get the bullets: from the author...
"it's just the day-to-day basic survival stuff."If you're expecting more, you'll just be disappointed. This is just a survival story, nothing else.
Sarah wrote: "Chapter 19 [spoilers removed]"I was totally expecting that, ever since (view spoiler)
@Sophie: it's going to be a little more than that, some new characters will apear and she's going to open up a little, but not by much and the story will remained concentrated on daily tasks rather than world building or character development.
I think that's a real issue with this book - the world building. We're not really told why there's this water shortage, and its not exciting as the blurb makes it sound. I think if we had more world building and more information this would be much better, but there are just these huge gaps and its annoying.
Yup, like I said in the spoiler after finishing this book:"For a place with short supply of water they sure manage to have ponds, wells and even a river. I don't know, but to me it seems that they were fighting because they were misinformed. They knew water might become scarce in the time to come so they went all caveman on their water supply and refused to share it with anyone."
pretty darn impossible if you ask me. even if she set up a pully system or something - those things weigh a tonne! what sort of flooring have they got in the attic if it can bear the weight of a piano?!
Sarah wrote: "yeah, its certainly lacking in world building.the end [spoilers removed]"
If you take a closer look at the story this book ends the same way it starts. At the beginning we have Lynn and her mother sitting atop the house protecting the pond and in the end (view spoiler)

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.
Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.
But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….
With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own."
Me and Nicolas will be reading this book soon, fell free to join us :) .
