Is the Encyclopaedia Britannica online an acceptable (and permissible) source for the profile picture on an author's page please?

I would say no, their terms and conditions do not appear to permit reuse of their content

In general, the only acceptable sources for an author's photo are the author themselves (with permission), the copyright holder of a photo (with permission), or a photo in the public domain.
