message 1: by Brooke (new)

Brooke (brookie_1d) I decided to pick Jane Austen for my author project for HS this year. I've never read any of her books before, so I was wondering if there was any book in particular that I should start with?

Nicole N. (A Myriad of Books) (amyriadofbooks) | 6 comments Pride & Prejudice is definitely the most common. I really it in high school for a senior English class and fell in love with Jane Austen. If you want something shorter then maybe Persuasion.

I definitely don't mind the length so maybe I'll start with P&P :) Thanks for your input!

Sophie | 1458 comments Definitely Pride and Prejudice. That was my first and I fell completely in love with it! There are some great TV and film adaptations I would recommend as well. :)

Maria | 94 comments I recommend "Pride and Prejudice" too :) It was my first and it is my favourite! The story is lovely, the characters are great and Mr. Darcy is... well he is my hero! :)

Brooke (brookie_1d) Ok, it looks like P&P is definitely the book to start with! Thanks so much for all of your help everyone! :)

Yanina Stachura | 19 comments Pride and Prejudice - like you Maria, it was my first and is my absolute favourite. Persuasion would be my second choice, it is a beautiful novel and Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth are as compelling as Lizzy and Darcy, but in a different way.

message 9: by Maria (new)

Maria | 94 comments I agree Yanina! "Persuasion" is close behind "Pride and Prejudice"! Besides, Anne Elliot is my favourite Austen heroine :) She is so strong despite her pain and her heart is so pure I love her a lot. Plus, Captain Wentworth's letter is wonderful!!

Annie (anniesmusings) | 12 comments Pride and Prejudice was the first one I read and it's my favorite, so I would definitely recommend starting with that book :)

Yes that letter from Captain Wentworth is superb - if my memory serves me it included the line "If I had loved you less perhaps I may have been able to speak of it more" or something like that. Just gorgeous :-)

Maria | 94 comments No, that line is from "Emma". It's from Mr. Knightley's proposal ;) Gorgeous all the same :D

Thanks for putting me straight there Maria - these Jane Austen men and their wonderful way with words :-) I must look up the letter again as I am certain sure it has something very quotable in it!

Maria | 94 comments They are amazing men indeed! I love the entire letter, but these are my favourite quotes: "You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope". "I have loved none but you". "For you alone, I think and plan". How romantic and loving!
