It's not the fans fault, non-readers are tired of the vampire theme, and the how it was marketed made it look like it was a tween gossip movie. You can't blame us and how do you know that the total fan base would have came up with the amount of money to make another one?

Some people, like myself, prefer our imagination and don't want to see it and honestly, the ya-movie-to-book-theme is getting old.

Ashlee Ellis The movie hasn't even been released here so I doubt the movie has made ALL its profit

Cas ♛ Awesome! the movie hasn't been released here either but since you all are saying it is good I will watch it when it comes out.

agree. the success or the lack there of has got to do with the story. tween vamp movies are always silly. only teenagers can watch it. as such the story is just an adaptation, so it loses on the new front.

Courtney Lee Im sorry you feel that way. But by the way, alot of international fans, including myself, haven't gotten the movie yet. So don't go blaming us fans just yet.

And you also need to consider the other aspects that may have contributed to the failure of the movie - like marketing, which was utter crap and apparently didn't do the movie justice. And there's also the fact that it wasn't released worldwide at the same time like they planned. The fact that they changed the release date may also have contributed to the movie getting such a low amount of money.

So it's not completely the fans fault, and if people don't want to see the movie because they fear it will tarnish their image of the characters and story, then that's their choice. Get over it. You want a sequel? Then stop complaining and actually go and keep seeing the movie. I certainly can't yet. And if you really want someone to blame? Blame the people that did the marketing, the release date distributions and the editing of the movie.

EmilyRose I think it's only come out in America though. We have to wait until April for it to come out in the UK.

E A- it's not out yet where I am
B-the marketing was crap and so was the cast choice
C-you can't blame us some LOYAL readers do NOT like to watch movie adaptations of their fav books so yh sucks for the movie franchise but am I sad? Not really..

Nikita It really doesn't make sense that others have to wait months before seeing it. I thought the release date was worldwide. The marketing for this movie really sucked as the trailer made it look like crap.

I still saw it and really liked it. If they don't continue the series, I'm going to be very sad and mad. They got all the Twilight books to become movies, why not Vampire Academy?

So unfair, right? it isn't out here either and though we don't have to wait till april we do have to wait till march. I feel sorry for the UK fans!

Emily This movie was horribly marketed. They did hardly any promotion for it- if I hadn't read the books, I think I wouldn't have any idea it was even coming out. Not to mention, they pushed up the release date...but I just ordered Indigo Spell the other day from B&N and when I got it, the sticker on the cover still said 'In theaters February 14'! So with very little promotion an inconsistent release dates, it's really no wonder it's tanking. Fans can only do so much- you need to advertise properly to pull new people in in order to be successful.

Kurt Bartling I'm sorry, but some of these comments are off. I'm a fan to Richelle Mead, read VA, Bloodlines and AoX series and I went to the movie with my daughter. First mistake was hiring the Waters brothers to do this series. As much as the idiots at the studio and the Waters morons thought this was a teen movie, I've never felt the series was a light mood. In fact Spirit Bound was so down/depressing I nearly quit the series. I always envisioned VA's mood more like Batman Begins, not quite as dark as the Dark Knight or Underworld, but darker. The whole series occurs after dark ... make it dark.

So for the studio and the Waters Idiots to write it like Mean Girls was downright ... well idiotic. Hell the movie came off as a spoof a'la The Starving Games. The light mood aside, what the hell was up with the pace of the movie. Its like the playback was sped up. There were no dramatic pauses in the dialog, even the dialog was rushed. With a little helium, Rose would have sounded like Alvin.

Here's the part I don't understand about movie studios. They insist on making films under 2-hours, so they can get more showings, but if the 2-hour version sucks ... who needs more showings. Its not like this movie was marketed to 5-9 year olds. You'd think they'd have learned from movies like Avatar, Hunger Games, Avengers, Iron Man, Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. If you make a good movie that's 2.5 hours long, people will go to it ... in droves.

I really liked this series, but the movie came off making it look like Richelle wrote a fan fiction to Twilight and Harry Potter, which I'd never thought. This movie was an insult to Richelle, and that's unfortunate. I really wanted this movie and The Mortal Instruments to succeed. In both cases, the studio destroyed the movies.

Somerandom Mate, in other places most movies don't come out at the same time as they do in the States. The world does not revolve around the US (although it might be beneficial to some of us if it did.) VA has yet to be released where I live, hell, in Australia we're only now getting 12 years a Slave!

As for the movie's "lack of success" (I think you have to give it more time, though) there's other factors. Some don't want the movie ruining their imagined characters, that's fine. The marketing made it look like a generic tween movie. Not appealing for the average movie goer or even for some VA fans. Some of the fanbase, like myself, have grown out of our love for the franchise. I mean I still like it and all. But the teen wangst, the High School shenanigans etc aren't very interesting to me anymore and that's found throughout the series (somewhat) but mainly featured in the first few books.
So I am a little put off seeing the adaption to begin with.
Release dates, as have been pointed out, differ country to country. So it's not like it still can't make back it's budget or still be successful. Patience, friend, patience.
And finally, whilst the first book is probably the most lighthearted of the series, it seems like the movie makes it a little too lighthearted, which can turn off fans pretty quickly.

It's not the fans fault that the movie isn't successful, not counting the upcoming potential international sales. That's on Hollywood for stuffing up the marketing and screen transition.

Besides, I'd rather hold onto my imagination and perceptions of the series, rather than have a film saga that totally ruins the books. (See Percy Jackson and it's increasingly insulting movie adaptations. *shudders*)

I live in NZ. when is the release date in AUS? is it the same as here?

Mary E. Hastings Michael said: "I am appalled that all you fans didn't see the movie, so for your spite your going to pay for it."

I'm sorry, but this -- as it has been pointed out in the thread already -- is not necessarily the "fans" fault. Again, this has already been pointed out, but the marketing for this movie was ATROCIOUS. It was absolutely horrid. I went to see the movie simply because I loved the books and wanted to see it DESPITE the god-awful trailers, but truthfully, if I hadn't read the books and known that it was a good series, there is no way I would have gone.

Furthermore, the casting choices were terrible. The only actors who even remotely fit the bill of the characters they were portraying were Sarah Hyland as Natalie and Dominic Sherwood as Christian. The rest of the casting was terrible.

AND AGAIN I SAY FURTHERMORE.... 90% of the movie centered around Lissa's quest for vengeance... aka - stupid, teeny-bopper, angst-filled, vampire bullying. Major plot points were omitted or skirted over in favor of painting blood on the walls and having Lissa act like a right royal bitch.

Now, all that being said, I actually DID find the movie entertaining. It was fun to watch and was something to do. However, I am not at all surprised that it didn't make more money, and I'm not at all surprised that the rest of the series will not be turned into movies. The flick just was not up to par.

Kenzie i'm so sad because i really love this series & also bloodlines & i would have loved for them to make all of the books into movies. :( if only everyone could give it a chance, especially non-fans. i will agree that the way the movie was advertised made it look cliche & annoying.

13th March according to Google. But sometimes different states can see a particular movie slightly ahead of the others, so I don't know.

Courtney Lee @ Somerandom

I just checked and apparently it was 13th of march but they moved it up to 6th of march.

The changes were not the problem as there was actually very few changes made. Richelle Mead was right about the movie being very true to the book.

The issue with the movie was it looked cheap and was very poorly edited. It needed a bigger budget and, from what I hear, the distributing company chose to have it edited last minute against the wishes of the director. The director and the screenwriter did the best job they could at keeping the book fans happy. Unfortunately their hard work is going under appreciated because the distributing company sabotaged their work.

Amy Acevedo I live 2 hours away from a theater so I did not see the movie but it seemed very preteenish to me so I didn't think I would drive all that way and pay for something I a not sure about. But I do in fact love the books.

Really? Psi-hounds attacking, An dream sequence that involves Christian and Lissa turning Strigoi, Sonya Karp and other Strigoi plotting something, Rose fighting an bunch of Guardians when she and Lissa finally get caught, Rose using an Silver Stake early on as well as altering scenes and lines from the book I would hardly call "an few changes" and that's not even getting into the characters' appearances changed as well.

The Waters brothers' original version may have been longer and more smoothly edited but it would still suffer the same flaws that Waters brothers created as opposed to what Weinstein created.

kayla tulop The special effects... No good. It was at some points though

Courtney Lee I watched the movie last night - and absolutely LOVED IT! Fans that haven't seen it, GO watch it. Yes, it is very unpolished in some places and the beginning was a little shaky and some scenes were a little weird, but all that pales in comparison to the trueness to the books it is. And its not cheesy AT ALL. Do you have any idea how hard it is nowadays to find a YA movie that isn't cheesy. And I freaking LOVED Dimitri! Of course, he isn't the Dimitri I imagined but he was amazing anyway. I have mixed feelings about Lissa though. Hated the portrayal of Kirova and Mia. I adored Rose, and pretty much everyone else.

I did think it was a little weird that you didn't see a few scenes in the movie that were displayed in the trailers, but whatever. I thoroughly enjoyed myself

Mindy I'd be surprised if they actually finish releasing the movie in other areas instead of sending it straight to DVD. I live in a major capitol city in the states and this movie only played for 2 weeks in the area theaters around here. And I went opening weekend to see the movie and 2 other people were in the theater.

While I enjoyed the movie, I would have loved it to be a little more dark and serious. I'm not sure I'd actually pay to see sequels but this is a movie that I would watch over and over on TV if I saw it while channel surfing.

Georgina I am absolutely heartbroken, this news is so sad to hear especially when I was hoping for the squeals. While this movie was not near-perfect -especially next to the book- it had a lot of potential. I feel it deserves a second chance. The next book is darker which would have given the film makers a better opportunity to get it right! I am saddened.

chinami i have not seen the movie yet but i feel like it will affect my love for the books.

message 39: by J.C. (new) - rated it 5 stars

J.C. That is not set in stone that we will not be getting a sequel. Fans are doing as much as they can and if you want to help you can find the "VA Spread the Word" Group on Facebook. The movie has been doing pretty well in other countries and it's still not out in all of them so don't lose hope. And as for those who haven't seen it, you really should. It will only make you love the books more. They did a great job on it.

Georgina Veronica wrote: "i have not seen the movie yet but i feel like it will affect my love for the books."

It is not the book, that's for sure. The book was a little immature in it's self though, the girly rumors, throwing "slut" around like a nick name.
The humor in the book is over exaggerated in the movie I feel. The darkness was a little cheesy at times,
But, it is woth watching. The acting in it was really good. They picked good people. The movie by itself is pretty good. It deserved more than it got.

message 41: by Sandra (last edited Mar 21, 2014 11:00AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sandra I've read VA and Bloodlines (hurry up #5) AND seen the movie. I can point out that I think it's absurd the fans get actually blamed for the low box income of the movie, but that has been said over and over.

Why not make a post ranting about how good this movie is and have that as your statement everywhere so all your friends and their friends know it's really good!

But as I said: I saw the movie and have mixed feelings about it. I love the books, and that is hard to beat. I have a thing for teen flicks which this movie as made out to be (really with the marketing and such - give me a break) But I went and saw it with my daughter who was really reluctant to see it, because she had heard me talking about how great those books are.

Funny thing is though: While I was not blown away by the film - I just liked it - my daughter was and THAT started her to finally wanting to read the books as well! Since 8 of her friends have also seen the movie and started reading the books ^_^ In my case a win-win situation :)

EmilyRose The film has been cancelled in the UK...

message 45: by Mochaspresso (new)

Mochaspresso Sorry to say it, but the VA fandom probably isn't large enough to carry a major motion picture all on it's own. I'm not a fan of the books and wasn't interested in seeing the movie. That is a problem because for it to be a success, it has to have the ability to cross over and attract new fans. It didn't do that. Plus, the timing of the release was probably all wrong. (Oscar buzz movies....Frozen and the Lego Movie crushing everything at the box office anyway....all of the teen fans that should have been attracted to VA held out for a week and went to see Alex Pettyfer in "Endless Love" instead. etc.)

Get The Fuck Out My Page White Bitches shut up if u want to txt me txt me in my page

Kathryn I would have loved to have seen it and am a huge fan of the VA books, unfortunately it wasn't released in the UK at all so please don't blame the fans because a lot of people were simply unable to see it in cinemas because of things like Exams and holidays or it simply not being shown in their country

Somerandom Emily wrote: "The film has been cancelled in the UK..."

I think it's because it didn't do very well in other countries so they cancelled it in the UK.
