From what I have read, the amount of author likes on your Amazon account has something to do with the formula that Amazon uses when determining your books rank - which determines how visible Amazon makes your book, the author likes are part of the mathematical formula used. As far as Facebook likes, a similar concept applies, Facebook uses a complicated algorithm when determining who will see your posts - and getting your post seen by as many folks as possible is everyone's goal. It is not a direct relationship - but both FB and Amazon use very complicated formulas including the number of likes. The other reason why it matters, with more Facebook likes - It makes authors feel more confident going to newspapers, etc with press releases, when they can boast I have #of followers etc. It shows a following and helps get you noticed. Did that convince you?
