How do you predict this series will end? (Do not enter unless you're willing to read spoilers up to and including Moby)

Donna I haven't read it anywhere. But then I thought MOBY was the final book so what can I say

message 102: by Zoey (new) - added it

Zoey Yes Diana has said that it is Jamies ghost & we will find out how & why he is there on the last page of the last book (whenever that may be)

Sage Donna wrote: I am not fully certain.."

The ghost is Jamie...he's wearing Jamie's plaid and the running stag broach that Jenny gave him. Frank comments on how unusual the broach is.
Also Ms Gabaldon has said the ghost is Jamic

Anne I'm frustrated! I love the chemistry between the actors; that's what initially hooked me in. And I don't want to keep watching, only to have a sad ending. I get tired of the constant tragedies, too! Please just give me a happy ending. Everyone dies eventually, but I don't need to see it happen for these two.

Kristen Lesperance I think Diana loves these characters too much to have them die at the end. I think she will let them live there days in peace. I don't think she will leave it all in a big bow tied up (meaning she wont tell us every detail and not let the readers imagination end it.), but with Jamie and Claire talking together sitting looking out at Frasers Ridge about something about there love, which to me is so much of the book, that it would be a good end.

I would love the whole family back in the past and be the family that Jamie and Claire want and love.

message 106: by Anne (new)

Anne Thanks Kristen. That would be a good ending for me. I totally get the fact that we age, die, whatever. But, I think we read to be taken away from everyday life. Obviously they'll die, but give me some gentleness. Give me some hope for better times. All the fighting and anger gets tiresome. I absolutely hate the whole Black Jack thing. He's horrible, and I get it. But the torture part with Jamie and all its details, I could do without. What is that based on anyway?

Forrest If Claire dies in jamie's timeline, won't Claire be born again in the future? Claire, therefore, can go back through the stones repeating outlander ....unless they write letters to future Claire (and think of a way to ensure she will get them) letting her know everything so future Claire will know about Jamie Perhaps they can avoid colloden so they won't be separated for 20 years on the next turn. If Claire keeps dying in jamie's timeline, their existence can keep repeating.

Forrest /\ may explain why Jaime's ghost was watching Claire--waiting for next cycle

Anne I'm probably not into this as much as a lot of fans because I think it goes on way too long. I probably would have enjoyed 5 books at most, and I've never cared for family sagas.

message 110: by Brinda (new) - added it

Brinda Cheraso I think that the story does not end. With Claire being from the future and Jamie being from the past, they just keep living their lives over and over. If she dies in the past she still has to be born in the future and I think that Jamie has to wait for her to return to him each time.

J. A. That's a lovely notion. Thanks for sharing!

message 112: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I believe that as long as Claire dies in the past, she will be born in 1918 and their lives will repeat. It has been said that the forget me knot flowers have importance to the story and they are likely planted there as a draw for Claire to go to the stones to repeat their story, maybe Claire or Jamie or the grand children will plant them. I am afraid she will have Claire go through the stones again, Jamie has mentioned seeing her in the future and he often times starts a sentence with if we are die or parted or if you are somewhere, as if he knows she will go again. But I think that may be part of the drama to come in maybe the last book. Making sure Claire returns to the past so she can die there and be reborn in 1918. I worry that they will also have to relive all the tragic things since his being an outlaw, being flogged etc is what propels him to be near the stones when she comes through and they meet so maybe that can never change. I would hope they could have a more peaceful life but them being forever there for eachother is enough. I think Fergus is related to Claire and perhaps he can travel through the stones too but doesn't know it since he has never been near them. And Germaine and Joanie, Felicity etc can also travel. The grandkids will play a huge part in keeping the story going. William and Bree will bond and share how she lived thinking another man was her father as did William but once she found Jamie and got to know him, she realized he was as much as or more of a father than Frank ever was, William will come to know Jamie through Bree and they will reconcile. He already loves Claire so it will be a natural progression. I wonder about Fanny why is she introduced, will she marry William or Germaine or will she cause some issue for Claire and Jamie, I don't know. I do wish Diana would concentrate on finishing the series instead of writing spin offs and other books. She says it takes year to write her books but she also seems to wander off to do other projects quite a bit. I love the show but feel the writers don't truly understand the characters and try too hard to add drama or twists that are distracting and unnecessary, the books and characters deserve to be honored and true. They have made Claire into an arrogant pushy witch at times when in the books she was actually grateful and respectful to the folks at the castle and in Paris they made Jamie so damaged that he and Claire barely touched when in the books they were mostly healed and were as close as ever. That has bothered me. I worry for future seasons. Taking 6 episodes to get them together was way too long. I understand the 20 year separation, as bad as it was, they could not unite again until Bree was old enough to be left behind, she had no idea that Bree could travel until she was an adult so if she had tried to go back to Jamie any sooner, she would have to leave her daughter which she could never do. So, we had to suffer those 20 long years of separation. I think the older Claire and Jamie will be better, more on par with eachother since there is an age gap of 5 years between them, Claire often times seemed a lot older, which she was, but now the age difference will be nothing. I am excited for Diana to finish book 9 and end the series at book 10, wish she would wrap it up at 9

Kristen Lesperance I like the idea that there story ends because she’s from the future. It’s a time loop at least it should be to some degree.

I don’t really want the series to end. I have a hard time with characters I love so much have a series ending is if the ending isn’t to how I need it to be then it bothers me, but if it continues it can be my way.

Beverley Hughes My view is that Jamie will develop an illness/condition that Claire knows can be cured in her own time. I think Jamie has always been able to hear the stones but will not admit to it either through fear or his love for Lallybroch & Frasers Ridge. I think that Jamie & Claire will come forward to modern times and will live out their lives surrounded by their descendents.

I like that ending!!!!!

Penny I would love to see Jamie coming forward in time, to experience Claire’s world

Beth S. I've only read the first three, so maybe this is explained later, but isn't Jamie's grave at St. Kilda's? Claire didn't find her grave there, but she also wasn't looking for it... So, unless it's a fake grave, that indicates to me that Jamie and Claire will end up back in Scotland, but I think they'll buy their own land close to Lallybroch, near the church, which is why Jamie is buried there instead of in his own family graveyard on his land or at Lallybroch with his parents and Willie. He'll die before Claire, and then maybe she goes to whatever time and place Bree is at. Though, I hope she does end up being buried next to Jamie and they just didn't notice her grave in book 2...

It is a fake, put there by Frank as a decoy to give Claire closure. That's how I recall it; that was so many books ago, my interpretation and mental decay is probably tampering with the text :-) I have listened to all 8 books, and we're no closer to solving the ghost puzzle. I'm convinced Gabaldon dropped that mystery in to ensure we'd keep reading her volumes.

Well, bummer! Damn Frank! Damn all Randalls! :)

I really want Jamie and Claire to live out their last years peacefully in the highlands.

Johanna Lehto I know some might disagree with me. But I think a perfect ending would be where Claire and Jamie grows old. It would be good if they could die together (happily). Death is a part of life and sooner or later it's their time. It would close their journey and one could reflect on the decades that has gone by.

Ingrid Johnsson Hello everyone! New here. For me all starts with Frank. Who is he? A demon or a saint? Claire sees him like a saint on book 1 (the light behind his head at the b&b) Well, he cannot have children...who else couldn’t have children? Black Jack after Jaime “cut” his parts in Paris. What else we have about him? Well he has heart problems too like his ancestor Alex Randall (should he be Alex descendant or Jaimie messed with the future?) He was part of the British secret service during WW ll (bet he did some awful stuff there). Sometimes it looks like he wants Claire to go back to the past, on first book he encouraged Claire to get the flowers ( Claire even ask him why he is so interested on them and he escape saying he is interested on the fires). Maybe Claire wasn’t supposed to go to the past at that moment? Maybe Jaimie was supposed to die at Culloden and reincarnate at Claire’s time? That’s why Jamie ghost was sad? Sad because it would lead them to that never ending loop ? Or it was inevitable? And Frank does it again when he puts the stone at st Kilda. The letter he leave for Bree? He new she could travel! And never said anything during those 20 years!
Sending the daughter back too (another loop?).Looks like Frank wants to separate them in bits of life, never letting them have a happy and whole life together....Claire meeting a resurrected Jaimie in Inverness before she goes through the stones. Maybe then they would have Faith and Bree as daughters and live happily ever after in Lallybroch.

That would be hell ! All that suffering over and over? Sometimes I wonder if it’s exactly what Frank wants lol
