Charlotte Weber This book was originally written in German. It's an interesting take on the post-war world. As an American, we tend to idolize the World War II generation. They're touted as the Greatest Generation because of their sacrifice and bravery. It was the best time to be a war hero. But The Reader brings to light the juxtaposition of the post-war generation in Germany. They reviled their parents and those who were in any way connected to the Nazi party. They even condemn those who just stood by and let the atrocities happen. This book also gives a brief and concise glimpse into the trials following the war and how it colors one man's ideology and memories. the narrator is so relateable because even he can't make heads or tales of how he feels. Should he hate a woman he once loved because of her true past? Should he hate himself for loving that kind of woman? There's no right or wrong, no moral high ground. There's just life.
