Luke (korrick) | 2004 comments The Expedition to the Baobab Tree, Wilma Stockenström, translated from Afrikaans by J.M. Coetzee, 1981, South Africa, NOVEL

"A quietly, compelling stream of consciousness narrative of a slave woman living in the hollow of a baobab tree, trying to survive after the death of her third master finds her alone in a wilderness.

Embracing this newfound freedom of her body, mind and time, she thinks back over the years, reflecting on what her existence thus far has meant, the role of her three masters, moments shared with a friend, the loss of her children and the inclinations of man, something she has witnessed both in captivity and in this solitary freedom, where she finds a kind of disturbed though preferable peace."

(Claire, review)

Jimmy (jimmylorunning) | 21 comments It would be great if there were an acacia tree on the cover. Opportunity missed, publishers! ;)

Claire (clairemcalpine) | 55 comments Ha ha, actually it was that post that reminded me of this book about the Baobab tree! I decided to make a positive contribution, by celebrating another tree and a worthy piece of literature to go with it.

A great cover too, not a tree in sight, at least not the version I read.
