Just for fun - A Dickens Character game
I shall kick off with an appropriate character for this group:A:
Augustus Snodgrass from The Pickwick Papers
Hugh who? Or is it Who Hugh, please Christine? And is "BR" Barnaby Rudge ? It's going to be easier for those of us who might not have read the works if you give full details (if there are any!) please, everybody. There are so many short stories, for instance, that initials just wouldn't be enough - they'd be a challenge in themselves :D
I:
Isaac (no surname, sorry!) The Pickwick Papers - coach driver - "a shabby man in black leggings"
Oh, and for those not reading BR. High is a major player in the story. Mother hung for petty crime while he was nursing at her breast. Became a "natural ". Stable boy. Rebel in Gordon riots. Isaac was great!!!! I could not think of an I to save my life. As I am looking nothing up. Going off the cuff as if we were face to face!
Good for you Christine! I always get a bit miffed when I play cyber-scrabble and someone repeatedly uses weird words as I have the same attitude - it takes all the fun out of it if it's not spontaneous! Although everybody's entitled to approach this how they want, of course :) Ooo - sorry I'd forgotten who "Hugh" was as it's a few years since I've read Barnaby Rudge and just remember the bones of the story...Fortunately I've just read The Pickwick Papers so knew "Isaac" (though I looked up the quotation thinking a quote will help the game along, if it's minor characters.)
5 "J"s! Both brilliant. We can probably be excused a few "J"s when they next come up then.
K:
Kate Nickleby (sister of Nicholas)
P:Pecksniff - The greedy architect "poser" in Martin Chuzzlewit . (First name is "Seth". I had to look that bit up though :)
Dick Swiveller, The Old Curiosity Shop.
W:Mr John Wemmick - Mr Jaggers' clerk in Great Expectations
Now we are up to "X". I have a sort of cheat, unless someone else has a proper one. Or the same "cheat" as mine of course...
Hmmm, Jean, I'm afraid you'll have to employ your cheat with regard to X ... My memory as to Dickens characters starting with an X has left me high and dry.
I have a vague memory of a "Mr X" if someone can fish it out of their memory for the next time around. Until then we have a couple more goes with the further manifestations of...X:
The Ghost of Xmas Past from A Christmas Carol
*ouch!*

Love it!! ha ha
Applying your example, Jean, I'd sayY:
York, any of the Five Sisters of ... ;-)
PS: From Nicholas Nickleby

That's the only one I can think of. X I'm still pondering, I refuse to except Xmas ghosts. :-}
As for Z,
does “The Zephyr” count? It is the pseudonym of Mr Minvins, in Pickwick Papers.
According to the rules (;)) as long as at least one other character regularly calls them by this name
so I'd say yes, Kim! Definitely!
And thanks to Kim's spurt of inspiration we are back at "A"! (Don't worry, Kim. I'm sure you'll get more chances to submit an "X"!! But I think we'll have to skip those really tricky letters soon!)
"A" anyone?
I love the way we're all avoiding the obvious ones!! Do you think we'll all be playing this in a few years' time and suddenly think, "Hey - nobody mentioned "Barnaby Rudge even though everyone was reading it!" ? ;)C:
Charles Cheeryble - one of the two wealthy brother who employ Nicholas Nickleby
(Do I get a bonus for doubling up my "C"s? LOL)
H:Luke Honeythunder, overbearing "Professor of Philanthropy" and guardian of Neville and Helena Landless in The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
I:"The Infant Phenomenon" in Nicholas Nickleby (her real name was Ninetta Crummles, but whoever remembers that?!)
I've been dying to put that one up ever since I thought of it in the early hours 2 days ago! Lovely name, "Luke Honeythunder", Kim! I don't remember him at all!

Nicholas Nickleby is my favorite Dickens book, after A Christmas Carol of course, so I knew who she was right away. :-}

Rules:
1. Put the letter you are working from at the top, followed by the name of the character, and the novel/story in which they feature (unless it is obvious, such as eponymous characters like Oliver Twist)
2. You can choose either the first (Christian) name or last (sur)name. Try to avoid titles such as "Mr" or "Lady" unless this is the name by which they are normally known.
3. You can use "nicknames" such as "Artful" or "Little", as long as at least one other character regularly calls them by this name.
4. Try not to duplicate! If Oliver Twist has once been used for the letter "O", then you cannot use it for the letter "T". If anyone spots a duplication, please post the mistake, and the game will proceed from the most recent correct entry.
5. If we get stuck on a letter, allow a little time for everybody to rack their brains, then pass on to the next letter.
I think that pretty much covers it, but will edit this post should it becomes necessary :)
